Toshiba T-01A aka TG01 drops in Japan, we consider packing up and moving
Know this right now, NTT DoCoMo subscribers… We hate you. Ok fine, we don’t really hate you at all — we’re just insanely jealous right now because the Japanese carrier just launched the Toshiba TG01. Sure NTT DoCoMo tried its best to minimize jealousy by renaming this screamer of a WinMo handset “T-01A”, but to no avail. If you don’t recall this beast for one reason or another, allow us to refresh your memory: 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) touchscreen with on-screen trackpad, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, G-sensor, microSDHC support and DivX support. Enough said. Pricing is still a bit unclear but it doesn’t matter really — unlocked imports are likely going to be the closest we come to this puppy, at least for the foreseeable future.
Thanks, Rev!

The tech specs on the TG-01 are simply just incredible. Wow… that screen is huge! I am a huge fan of innovation no matter who or where it comes from. I have always said that I love the open free market and I am happy that we have so many good choices to pick from (e.g., windows mobile, android, symbian, apple, etc). I think all of this competition is good for the end users and I also think all of the various solutions have something positive to bring to the table. We just have to decide what we like and stop all of the bashing of the others.
I just picked up the t-01a a few days ago (Kanagawa, Japan). This is my first smartphone, and also my first windows ce device so I cant really say with any comparative experience that it is good or not. what I can tell you is that it feels pretty nice, the interface is fairly intuitive, and it is quite fast at what it does. I am going to look into Smart Tweaker 2008 and see if I can get past the 5-15-30 second video recording time limit the built in camera app has in place… its really rather annoying, since I enjoy video recording my love hotel exploits with my girlfriends. what else can I say, its great for internet, nice big display and very smooth access (7.2mbps) from docomo over here. It has frozen once since i got it, when i was looking at the certificates, it decided to poof out on me when i closed the app. the only major gripe i have about it is its apparent total lack of English menu options. there is an option to change to English, but 99% of any menus or buttons or whatnot are not translated. luckily I am fairly fluent in japanese including kanji reading otherwise I would find it extremely frustrating. I am a newb when it comes to CE so it may be likely i am missing how to make menus and buttons show up in english…. meh. From what ive been reading, it looks like I picked the ferarri of smartphones. Good start to base future purchases!
“windows mobile is for people who don’t get out much… when you buy something as expensive as some of these WM phones are you shouldn’t have to spend days hacking them to get them to work right”
As opposed to iphone users that are trendy as hell, and don’t have things work AT ALL, or multitask, so they live with it.
Well I think those are the people with brains that don’t get out much, just their egos.
