Toshiba T-01A aka TG01 drops in Japan, we consider packing up and moving
Know this right now, NTT DoCoMo subscribers… We hate you. Ok fine, we don’t really hate you at all — we’re just insanely jealous right now because the Japanese carrier just launched the Toshiba TG01. Sure NTT DoCoMo tried its best to minimize jealousy by renaming this screamer of a WinMo handset “T-01A”, but to no avail. If you don’t recall this beast for one reason or another, allow us to refresh your memory: 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) touchscreen with on-screen trackpad, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, G-sensor, microSDHC support and DivX support. Enough said. Pricing is still a bit unclear but it doesn’t matter really — unlocked imports are likely going to be the closest we come to this puppy, at least for the foreseeable future.
Thanks, Rev!

looks pretty sick. except for that little windows mobile thing.
we haven’t heard anything of those…http://www.microsoft.com/japan/windowsmobile/wm6/prodinfo/device/compare.aspx#top
dosent sound like bad devices at all………(who cares if it wont see the light of day here in the states.)

@boyohboy
Would you idiots shut up about Windows Mobile already? It is a great OS. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it the worst thing in the world. It can multi task and has had ALL the “innovative” features that other phones are just getting for YEARS. The stock interface is a bit iffy and hard to use with your fingers but there are many add-ons and most new Windows Mobile phones are pre-loaded with software to make them easy to use without a stylus.
So just STFU, even BGR isn’t as anti-WinMo as they used to be.
@Peter
Yeah but Windows Mobile has been left behind. Look at all the new shiny OS iPhone, Android, Palm etc. They are all becoming very eye candy. Even Windows Mobile has long term strategy to shift in this area as well with Windows Mobile 7 and 8. This is a great piece of hardware, but having something like Android on it would do it proper justice
How long until the complaints about:
winmo
it doesn’t say capacitive screen so it must be resistive which sucks
it doesn’t say oled, so it must not be
Where’s the 3.5 mm jack!
looks awesome to me…but we won’t see it stateside until…
You mention “unlocked imports”… Which US carrier would this work on? Or, really, how bad could the roaming fees be??
@ because i said so: There aren’t any us carriers that the phone would work with as far as I know. Japan is a creature all its own when it comes to cellphone standards.
@Peter:
Amen.
I’ve been tethering with WinMo phones for 4 years. I’ve been taking video for 2 years. Been multitasking since day one.
Yes, WinMo is sluggish from most U.S. carriers, but get a cooked ROM from ppcgeeks or xda-developers that actually has a pagepool worth using, and it will fly.
windows mobile is for people who don’t get out much… when you buy something as expensive as some of these WM phones are you shouldn’t have to spend days hacking them to get them to work right
There’s nothing wrong with win-mob..you think that blackberry O.S is good ??? All I can’t say is Ha Ha ..submitted from my curve 8330
moronic winmo haters…here’s a simple fact:
there are no perfect phones. I haven’t seen a perfect winmo phone. Iphones have many issues at very basic levels. The few droid phones out there have a long way to go. symbian needs serious work. webos is marginally ready for primetime…so let’s all keep pushing the mftrs andd the carriers to get it right, dang it!
the resident idiot has arrived
StevenGlansburg that is
never said it was the worst thing in the world i’m just not a fan of it. i’ve had a couple in the past and i understand all the things it can do but i’m just tired of it. no it’s not horrible but to me there’s better like the androids and the iphones
Yeah, that’s original. Bashing Windows Mobile. Truth is, WinMo isn’t bad…
yes, Android is the greatest OS ever. thats all i hear lately, but 90% of the people decrying it’s wonderfulness don’t even have an android phone. mainly because it’s still in it’s infancy and winmo as un-hip as it may be does just about anything you want it to do and can be completely modified to do even more.
Not a WinMo fan or user here, but that phone and its specs look absofrickinlutely sick.
VZW will have at least one Toshiba WinMo phone this year. I have no info on specs but it did have a random name similar to this one. There might be more than one Toshiba phone this year for VZW.
I don’t know much more but it is expected 3rd quarter.
A Good Mobile Messaging rep cam by with a cardboard display showing all the upcoming WinMo devices for VZW. Touch Pro 2 was also there (I think thats common knowledge though)
Damn those specs are impressive. I wonder what the chances are of this coming Stateside. Can’t comment on a WinMo device as I have not used one.
Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).
Is there any way to port android on this puppy?
Beautiful hardware design. Windows mobile is a poor choice. The OS was built around a stylus for input and requires frequent reboots for optimal operation. There is just not enough lipstick for that pig. No thanks.
You have to reboot WinMo alot? My Sammy Saga goes weeks without me rebooting it. It’s a very stable device.
the Winmo haters have either never heard of XDA/PPCGeeks or have not used a device that has been blessed by the talents of those chefs. My Sprint TP running on VZW with 6.5 and loads of add-ons will run the mill on any hacked iphone or puny Android… oh what, I can run Andriod on my WM device too..
I ask any haters to try someones modded WM device before passing judgment.
@tande04 Indeed Japan is its own world for standards.
Importing this phone will probably be pointless as its probably still locked to Japanese mobile standards. A Japanese cell phone outside of Japan is like using a cell phone from the early 2000s. That is the reason why I don’t have one yet.
Importers would be better (far better) off waiting for it to be released in Europe where it won’t have specialized standards.
