Apple sells over one million iPhones during launch weekend, six million OS 3.0 downloads

It looks like dogs everywhere are in for some trouble as Apple reveals over one million iPhone 3G S models were sold this past weekend. Yep, that’s a whole lot of high pitched squealing — but apparently the “S” stands for “Sales”. Almost equally as impressive, it looks like Steve Jobs was somehow tracked down for comment:

Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning. With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.

Fair enough, Stevo… Over a million handsets sold and over six million OS 3.0 downloads in one weekend is definitely a solid showing. What’s more is that despite a few issues here and there, users seem overwhelmingly happy with their new handsets. How about you guys — satisfied customers or buyer’s remorse?

PS- Apple, your website is slathered with “3G S” and today’s release repeatedly mentions “3GS”. Work it out.

    I wanted to list all of that … but listing everything my iPhone can do better than everyones WM and BB will be one huge post, and I don’t have that much time.

    @ AgBand,

    Well obviously not if it sold 1 million over the weekend….

    read the entire sentence “people can complain all day about what it can’t do but in the end…nobody cares cuz it wasn’t there before and it still sold just fine.”

    These figures are WORLDWIDE, that’s an average of about 40,000 per country. That’s nothing to get your panties wet over.

    40K per country. I think your numbers are wrong. 8 countries at 40K totals 1 million?

    It may be faaaast but I don’t think its twice as fast as the 3G. Plus you don’t need the compass to orient the map to the direction you are going. xGPS from Cydia already does that with my 3G (it did about 5 months ago) so you don’t really need a compass to make your maps better. I guess it could have other useful functions, but you have to admit the changes were pretty weak, and some of the so called “hardware specific” functions they say can only be done on the 3G S are a lie, Apple could have put some of them in for the 3G.

    Well I came from a Treo 750 and got the 3Gs and I text a lot, and that’s what I’m most disappointed by…. First what happen to the emoi cons this is the IPHONE I can’t put a smiley face in my text what gives that 1999….I could save I whole conversation in word format if I wanted just select all and paste to word… pretty handy right. It like everything is restricted and it’s MY phone I paid for I have to use iTunes for everything….I mean I love some of the phone to cause u can’t beat some off the apps like flixster and safari look brilliant….. But this is MY phone I should b able to at least access storage and put files from work or home word docs. Pdfs just store info…..why so restricted I think am going to return it and wait on Touch Pro 2

    8 countries?… I thought it was 23, any rate, that’s still only an average of 125,000 for each country. I am curious about the number of units sold in the States.

    @Jay Tee,
    I put my office documents on my M: drive (MobileMe) where I drag my office documents. I then access them wirelessly from my phone using QuickOffice and can even edit my documents. Through there I can also view spreadsheets, PDF, images, you name it. All without hooking my phone up to a wire.

    And if I want to transfer files, all I do is open QuickOffice files, navigate to it using a web browser … and upload whatever I want to my phone. All wirelessly using its built in web server.

    I worked with office documents a lot more efficiently than I ever did with my WM device.

    And as far as emoticons … are you a 12 year old japanese school girl to care so much about a damn smiley?

    Yeah I forgot about emoji. LOL Yes, you can fullfill your 12 year old japanese school girl side and put emoticons everywhere by using emoji! So even Jay Tee will be happy!

    I don’t know why you are all figuring 40,000 AVERAGE. Out of the countries selling the iPhone you have to figure that the biggest market is the US. And you are going to figure the US as an average? The US gets the biggest share of the iPhone sales pie.

    I call it 3G(”S”upposed to be). Meaning, it was the way that the 3G was supposed to be a year ago. I’m not happy with the price, but there’s no way in heck I’m going back to my 3G now. The new 3Gs is heads and shoulders above the previous version. I would say, there’s going to have to be a lot of re-writes on games. I’ve got over 50 on my system, and a fair amount of them didn’t program the games for the new proc speed. (ie. hints look like a flash/splash screen and not even readable because the load time is so much quicker). Great phone, would highly recommend for someone who has been “thinking” about the iPhone. And, if you’ve had your 3G for a while, don’t play with the new one unless you have the $ to upgrade it.

    You need to reread that article, it does not say 750,000 in the US alone, he updated his overall worldwide figure from 750,000 to 1 million.

    @Christopher Cox

    Firstly, the Euro is more valuable than the US dollar, secondly, if you think the current US is a bigger market than the rest of the world (especially with it’s crippled economy), I have a bridge to sell you in Alaska.

    First of all, currency has absolutely nothing to do with overall sales numbers. And yes, more iPhones are sold in the US than any of the other countries selling iPhones.

    @ Christopher Cox

    Where did I say currency has anything to do with overall sales? I am pointing out the fact, a profit driven hog like Apple, will make more money releasing their products where the currency is stronger. If that weren’t the case, why doesn’t Apple release the iphone in a poor country? The irony is, there are many poor countries that have a better GSM network than the US.

    Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to sell even more if Apple actually kept ATT stores stocked with the new models? Stores in a four county area where I live have been out since midday Friday and don’t know when they will receive any more.
