Nokia Siemens to acquire Nortel’s LTE and CDMA assets

Canada-based Nortel, once North America’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, filed for bankruptcy in January 2009 after a turnaround effort failed. As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, Nortel will sell its LTE and CDMA assets to Nokia Siemens for a cool $650 million. The acquisition will improve Nokia Siemen’s position in both North America and the growing LTE business. The acquisition is subject to approval from both the US bankruptcy court and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice but it’s expected to close in Q3 2009.

Nortel’s equipment runs T-Mobile’s 2G equipment in the New York area, probably elsewhere too.

Their 3G equipment is made by Ericsson.

Nokia should get back, full-fledged, in the CDMA game. This probably bodes well for vzw since they are operating both the mentioned networks for the next five years

Unlike its soon to be meaningless -if they don’t do something about it(or buy RIM) handset business. Nokia is pretty strong in the network equipment side of the business, and this can only make them better. As for the handset business, not moto yet but on the same path

you are an idiot. Nokia is doing just fine and is no where near Motorola. You must be an iPhone fanboy that thinks America is the be all end all. Nokia is THE market leader in mobile handsets and its not even close. The second place company (Samsung) could double their marketshare and still be behind Nokia’s 38%-40% global marketshare. Gokmengs, do not post anything unless you are sure of what youre talking about….that is unless you want everyone reading to think youre a douchebag. I think youre a douchebag.
