Confirmed: Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G S retail pricing starts at $699, available for purchase at all Canadian Apple Stores

Quite a few people were outraged by the $699 and $799 no-contract prices we listed for perspective iPhone 3G S buyers on Rogers and Fido, and understandably so. Some questioned whether or not pricing would be the same directly from Apple and Rogers/Fido however, and thanks to some fine-print on Apple.ca we have been able to confirm that the 16GB iPhone 3G S will go for $699 and the 32GB model will go for $799 — identical to Best Buy Mobile’s pricing:

For non-qualified customers, including existing Rogers or Fido customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone3G, the pricing without a new agreement is $599(8GB), $699(16GB), or $799(32GB).

Also of note is the fact that the nine Apple Stores in Canada will themselves be selling the entire iPhone line up, something they did not do with the iPhone 3G. Hit the jump for a screenshot of Apple’s terms.

UPDATE (rev 2): It looks like both Fido and Rogers will be doing their best to not sell the iPhone 3G S at no-contract pricing at launch. To be clear, Fido and Rogers’ official position is that the 3G S will be available off contract, but we’re hearing differently from our ninjas. At least preliminarily, they’d MUCH rather sell 3G S units tied to contracts.

WHy can’t Rogers/Fido introduce the same idea of early upgrade like AT&T… $699 for a 3GS … is a little to much.

    :(

That’s way too much. Maybe $499 and $599, but not $699 and $799.

They won’t actually sell you one tomorrow though. Apple Store in downtown Toronto called to confirm my Personal Shopping appointment at 8 AM tomorrow, and they said they’re only selling iPhones to customers getting a three-year agreement. No plans to change that any time soon, either, according to this customer service rep.

I buy my phones retail and i really think this is very reasonable.
An HTC touch HD costs $999cdn+ taxt
or sony X1 is $799cdn+ tax
or even a BB bold costs $570 with no contract.

Thats the price you pay for being an early adopter and buying retail, heck my S500i cost me $360.
the bigger memory did play a part in upping the cost of the 3GS

this is complete rip off. its ridiculous Canadian have to get screwed all the time with Robbers and Fido or bell. 3 f$%&ing years contracts and most expensive plans on the planet, it really is a crime

    Shawn says:

What a rip off! It makes NO sense that Canadian consumers are required to pay the same price for all brands of iPhones when we are required to sign THREE year terms versus TWO year terms down in the States. Even the no-contract prices are a rip-off considering the exchange rate.

As much as we all hate Rogers, at least they are allowing tethering and MMS.

Just don’t buy it. Pretty simple really. It’s totally overpriced for a device that doesn’t even multi-task. Hell, even Windows 95 multi-tasked. Save your money for something worth the price.

Was just speaking to a Rogers rep on the phone and asked if early upgrading is possible. What she said is that Rogers officials are internally looking into the possibility and if so at what price. She said an official announcement/instructions will be in place by tomorrow.

well knowing rogers, they would probably just put it 100 dollors off the no contract price for early upgrading lol, they recently changed thier stance on HUP, and plus its robbers so i dont expect anything to change lol

I called Rogers today to ask whether I was eligible for the upgrade pricing. I only got my 3g about 9 months ago. He looked at my account and said I was eligible for the subsidized pricing, which would lead me to assume they’re doing the “everyone is eligible for upgrade with a new 3-year”, same as when the 3g was launched.

I’m skeptical, but I’ll try to order one tomorrow and see.

I still dont understand how people are causing a shit fit about this- I live in Canada and I hate the three year contracts too, SO i buy my phones retail and skip over contracts.

If your complaining that your locked into a 3 year contract and you want to upgrade to a 3GS then stop assuming Rogers owes you something because they really dont.

No wonder they are called Robbers. AT&T’s no contract prices are $399/499 while Robbers is at $699/799. Robbers must be using the C$ exchange rate from 2000.

Bend over Canadians and assume the position

    Marco R says:

Guys, these prices are fair. They are allowing you to purchase the phone without a contract. Do you guys even know how much these phones cost? There isn’t 50% margin in the handsets.

Also, understand that you can not compare AT&T to Rogers. First, the Rogers network is more superior than AT&T.

Secondly, we are 1/10th the size of the US. They buy in bigger volumes, meaning better deals… If AT&T sells 10 million iPhones, Rogers would only sell 1 million. Keep in mind that AT&T has 70 million customers and Rogers has only 7 million.

I remember buying my first unlocked iPhone for 700$ CDN. That was 8 GB. These are better phones and have more features and have way more memory…

So stop comparing AT&T to Rogers.

If you think you are getting ripped off, then don’t buy the phone and keep what you have… No one is forcing you to upgrade.

Ok called Best Buy and the only way to buy it without a contract is from Apple. I sold my iPhone 3G and now I’m stuck with a RAZR. FML.

Robbers, should stop with that 3 years contract BS. coustomers should be able to get their HU, (hardware upgrade) every year but they changed it now you have to wait two long years before you are even eligible to get the HU and another 3 years contract. ridicules

Agreeing with Marco R and anon above: the prices are fair-ish, Rogers is much better than AT&T, if you don’t like it, don’t get one; just stop f’ing complaining about it.

i think people are more pissed about having to pay an arm and a leg to be able to get a new device. last year Rogers in canada let anyone who was atleast 3 months into their contract upgrade to an iphone at new activation pricing, and having to deal with this 699/799 pricing is a bit stupid on rogers part i think, its like they are trying to sell less iPhones.

i called in this morning. i got a 3g last year when they came out… there will be an early upgrade option avaiable for the 3gs.

the person on the phone said keep checking your online account for hardware upgrading. apparently after 4pm the system should have gone over everyone accounts and determined who is eligible…

i’ll be at the rogers store as soon as the early upgrad option shows up!

called Fido three times today to try and get them to give me the 3GS for cheaper but they won’t. I’m one year into this contract and they will only let me get a $100 dollar credit for being a 3G owner already and put my $41 Fido dollars against it. Still have to pay the 699/799. ont3gs I have read what you are saying elsewhere but the service reps say it isn’t true. I haven’t given up however. I’ll keep trying and checking the web but if you get any new news please post it here. Thanks.
