Apple and AT&T announce details for tomorrow’s iPhone 3G S launch
As we’re sure you’re all very well aware by now, tomorrow marks the day that the iPhone 3G S will be available to the masses. Online pre-orders will be delivered and both Apple and AT&T stores will be opening with stock in hand to sell. Those preparing to score themselves a shiny new iPhone 3G S may want to take heed of some of the information that AT&T and Apple have released regarding tomorrow’s launch however, so hit the jump for a full run down of the launch information.
Here is what you need to know if you are going to be braving the potentially wild crowds and heading out to get your new iPhone 3G S:
- The iPhone 3G S will be available tomorrow morning from all 2,200 company-owned AT&T retail locations and all 211 US Apple retail stores.
- AT&T stores will be opening at 7AM to fulfill in-store pre-orders for the iPhone 3G S. Customers who did not pre-order will be able to purchase the new iPhone at the regular retail opening on a first come, first served basis. Apple stores were expected to open at 8AM but are now reportedly opening at 7AM. Call ahead to confirm the hours just to be on the safe side.
- Shipments for online pre-orders will be delivered starting tomorrow. Sorry folks, even if your UPS facility is next door to your house, they will not be delivering your iPhone today according to the official info. Keep in mind that the initial inventory for pre-orders did sell out so if you were not Johnny on the spot and did not pre-order right away, your delivery date may be later than the 19th.
- The iPhone 3G S will be available for $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) for all new AT&T customers and existing AT&T customers who have fulfilled their contract. As we reported yesterday, AT&T extended this pricing to current iPhone 3G customers who purchased the iPhone 3G in July, August, or September 2008. Eligibility requirements apply.
- All other iPhone 3G owners who have not yet fulfilled their existing agreement can upgrade early to the iPhone 3G S for $399 (16GB) and $499 (32GB). Full retail purchases without a two year contract are also available. If you are not sure of your eligibility, you can check your online account, call AT&T or go to an AT&T store or text *639# from your current AT&T handset.
- Sorry folks, no multiple handset purchases. AT&T stores will only sell one iPhone 3G S per person for new customers, one iPhone 3G S per eligible line for current AT&T customers and one device per household for online shoppers.
- If you are porting a number from another carrier, remember to bring the appropriate documentation including a copy of your wireless bill from your current service provider, your account number, your name and billing address on the account, your Social Security number or tax ID and your account PIN or password.
- If you inherit an iPhone 3G from a friend or family member, you will need to visit an AT&T store to activate your phone. If you inherit an original iPhone, you can request a SIM card from AT&T and activate it at home via iTunes.
- Listen to your voice mail messages as all voice mail will be lost when switching devices.
Have fun out there tomorrow and report back in when you get your mitts on your new iPhone 3G S!

Why would anyone wait in line for hours just for a phone. I don’t get it. But maybe it’s me. I must be missing something.
You forgot to mention that if you had pre-ordered the phone for 19th, then you must pick it up on the 19th. Don’t wait until Saturday the 20th to pickup your phone as your pre-order phone will no longer be guaranteed and could possibly be no longer available. This is what I heard from a store manager at my local Apple Store.
wow apple has all you people brainwashed Bob you where absolutely correct. The Iphone has that WOW factor and sex appeal….other than that its all 3-5 year old technology just put together well. I’ve used it and I’m not saying its a bad phone by any means but its not nearly worth the hype that you ppl make it out to be. I’m surprised there isn’t some sort of secret apple (iphone) religion or cult… or is there?
This was pointed out to BG yesterday. Why the heck are they not correcting this!! They are missleading their readers
My iPhone was at UPS and I just went up there and picked it up. Everyone should try that if you pre-ordred.
@Bob
can you stop even talking about winmo its absolute garbage we all know that I don’t care what options it has, I used the 6.1 pro winmo and its painfully slow its so sluggish and useless, the iphone should have had these option before I agree but but when it does it does it properly, quick and smooth with a very good UI. winmo is way behind I’ve used both and no thanks to winmo at least for now, its shame for Windows to be in business so many years and they still can’t build something useful we’ll see how they do with winmo 6.5 or 7
Everyone can fight about this stuff all day. One thing you can’t fight: ~67% of mobile browsing is done on iphone/touch’s. 50 million iphones and ipod touches sold in less than 2 years. Honestly, numbers say alot. you can bash apple and the iphone. You can have the best specs in the world, but if nobody’s buying your stuff, who cares what you offer. HONESTLY
I don’t understand why anyone would wait in line. I preordered one for my kid through the internet. No lines, took a couple minutes. I just don’t get lines for something you can get without wasting your time.
I think I’ll stick with my Sidekick.
If/when Stern lets the XM iPhone app stream his show I’m dropping the android and grabbing an iPhone.
> ~67% of mobile browsing is done on iphone/touch’s.
And by “mobile browsing” you mean “time wasting”?
> if nobody’s buying your stuff, who cares what you offer. HONESTLY
Blackberries have been outselling iPhones pretty handily since day one and are projected to keep outselling them for at least another year (when there will be yet another iPhone with mediocre enhancements).
HONESTLY.
An iPhone is a great toy, but it is not yet a smartphone.
It is slowly getting closer, however.
Can the article be corrected. “Purchased in July August September 2008 get discount…” is not correct.
more “intuative”??? Hope it has a spell check now. Wait, it has a compass. That’ll make the teenyboppers happy. Sheep.
@ mu$h da great
The Omina 2 will be on Verizons network soon.
how pathetic…..ok lemmings next up, there’s a slick new app at itunes that’ll measure the air density in your head….come and get it!
Find another cell phone out there that has an app for what you need?
I’ve got 3 nokias loaded with every app I need, and woah, not one is a fart app.
Find another phone out there that gives you 32gb of space for music etc without purchasing a memory chip?
Uh, as Technology evolves, memory chips gorw and I can have more than 32GB. Plus I can swap them from phone to phone and have an endless supply of storage.
Find another phone out there that tracks and finds your device if lost or stolen.
I have access to at least 5 apps on my Nokias that will do it, oh yes, and wipe it clean and send me all my user data if I ask it too.
Point is, there are way too many features that the iPhone has that no other cell phone has.
Like it’s newly introduced MMS and cut and paste?
Apple and the iPhone is lightyears ahead of everyone else. Take that to the bank pal.
I really beg to differ, but you know, you can’t argue with a blindly led fanboy.
@Chris, I have an 8525 and TILT, i don’t have any problems with them slowing down.
In addition, i don’t see how on my N79, sliding the camera lens cover open, which in turn launches the camera, then pushing the dedicated shutter halfway down to focus, like a real camera, then all the way to take the pic which is great quality 5mp….not to mention dual led flash. Sorry, but iphone 2mp doesn’t even compare to that.
N95 has had this simple (minus the cover, but still dedicated shutter with AF) functionality for years, with 5mp.
Well, The truth is that I have both phones, the omnia and the 3G phone. they both have plus and minuses. The omnia is really loaded and has a lot more than even the new IPHONE 3GS. One thing that makes the IPHONE stan out is the design and the availability of applications and ways to customize the phone. The omnia like most winmo phones are hard to alter and make to your liking. I also hate the omnia keyboard sensitivity and responsiveness. I am indeed dissapointed with the small leap that apple has taken from the consumer stand point, but I am sure that it is hard to cram all that technology in the phone and maintain the slim design and low weight, also the cost, after all they are in it for a profit.
The one thing that I would definitely change with the IPHONE is ATT. Their service is questionable and so unreliable, I think Apple should have looked beyond economics on that one.
To end this huge dissertation, look at the blackberry Tour, now we are talking, powerful and in the best network. That is the real IPHONE competition. I have the old curve and it is a sweet phone. The curve will be really a competitor. The only weakness is the available applications, but getting better. That is all
New iPhone. So exciting!! I wish I could get one! Oh well.
I do wonder, if there’ll be a huge line like inb years past!
So exciting!!
I-i-i-iPhone!!
Another iPhone? Oh, wait it’s the same iPhone with new features.

Well, both a Chevy Impala and a BMW M3 have a steering wheel and 4 wheels, doesn’t mean they drive the same. I’ll take a BMW M3 any day.
IPhone rules. All the haters only give the iPhone more momentum and gravity.
If the iPhone had a better camera, flash, physical keyboard, BlackBerry-like email functionality, I’d get one again. Meanwhile, I’m sticking with my BlackBerry Bold.
Very Truly Yours,
Conrad P. Hernández, MD.
Line up for a second rate phone on AT&T, why.
@all of you stating that we are misleading you
It is AT&T playing semantics. Our statement and AT&T’s press release are both accurate. Those that purchased the iPhone 3G between July and September 2008 will be eligible for the upgrade price, if they meet certain requirements. I mention that there are certain eligibility requirements that must be met.
Those that meet the requirements often have plans that last 12 months instead of 24 months and would be eligible for an upgrade between July and Sept 2009. Unfortunately, not too many people will meet those requirements.
I won’t be joining in the “fun” this year.
