Apple and AT&T announce details for tomorrow’s iPhone 3G S launch
As we’re sure you’re all very well aware by now, tomorrow marks the day that the iPhone 3G S will be available to the masses. Online pre-orders will be delivered and both Apple and AT&T stores will be opening with stock in hand to sell. Those preparing to score themselves a shiny new iPhone 3G S may want to take heed of some of the information that AT&T and Apple have released regarding tomorrow’s launch however, so hit the jump for a full run down of the launch information.
Here is what you need to know if you are going to be braving the potentially wild crowds and heading out to get your new iPhone 3G S:
- The iPhone 3G S will be available tomorrow morning from all 2,200 company-owned AT&T retail locations and all 211 US Apple retail stores.
- AT&T stores will be opening at 7AM to fulfill in-store pre-orders for the iPhone 3G S. Customers who did not pre-order will be able to purchase the new iPhone at the regular retail opening on a first come, first served basis. Apple stores were expected to open at 8AM but are now reportedly opening at 7AM. Call ahead to confirm the hours just to be on the safe side.
- Shipments for online pre-orders will be delivered starting tomorrow. Sorry folks, even if your UPS facility is next door to your house, they will not be delivering your iPhone today according to the official info. Keep in mind that the initial inventory for pre-orders did sell out so if you were not Johnny on the spot and did not pre-order right away, your delivery date may be later than the 19th.
- The iPhone 3G S will be available for $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) for all new AT&T customers and existing AT&T customers who have fulfilled their contract. As we reported yesterday, AT&T extended this pricing to current iPhone 3G customers who purchased the iPhone 3G in July, August, or September 2008. Eligibility requirements apply.
- All other iPhone 3G owners who have not yet fulfilled their existing agreement can upgrade early to the iPhone 3G S for $399 (16GB) and $499 (32GB). Full retail purchases without a two year contract are also available. If you are not sure of your eligibility, you can check your online account, call AT&T or go to an AT&T store or text *639# from your current AT&T handset.
- Sorry folks, no multiple handset purchases. AT&T stores will only sell one iPhone 3G S per person for new customers, one iPhone 3G S per eligible line for current AT&T customers and one device per household for online shoppers.
- If you are porting a number from another carrier, remember to bring the appropriate documentation including a copy of your wireless bill from your current service provider, your account number, your name and billing address on the account, your Social Security number or tax ID and your account PIN or password.
- If you inherit an iPhone 3G from a friend or family member, you will need to visit an AT&T store to activate your phone. If you inherit an original iPhone, you can request a SIM card from AT&T and activate it at home via iTunes.
- Listen to your voice mail messages as all voice mail will be lost when switching devices.
Have fun out there tomorrow and report back in when you get your mitts on your new iPhone 3G S!

@LadiesCallHimSoftCastle: I have a WinMo device right now that has a close function(Omnia.) However, you need to have graduated from elementary school to use it though.
@crazyLAMElegs: I named numerous points as to why the iPhone is substandard. I love it how you didn’t name any, but yet you leave a comment about me not adding anything constructive?
Meh, i will just get the palm pre after all. besides being a sweet phone, a company that actually has good coverage and FAST internet is supporting this device
All this whining about apple not being a good company, and iphone being crap! Listen here TROLL’s, I’m a Blackberry user for about 6/7 yrs now, and tried the first Generation iphone out. And while I didn’t think of it as an absolute must have business tool, it was a media giant! Now with 3.0, push email, a much improved camera, etc! I’m going to try it once again. Listen people Apple is the champ right now, and to beat the champ u need a knockout! Nobody is coming with a knockout from what I’m seeing, Samsung included. Sorry guys, it’s just the truth.
@Bob: iPhone at 2MP takes better photos than almost ALL other smartphones (yes including 5.0MP ones). Anything that references a Windows Mobile device is immediately not considered in any conversation as this OS by far has the most bugs, slowest and out dated OS for any phone (yes including the IDEN OS). You can put an 800MHz chip in a WM device and it will still run slow and buggy with that horrible OS they use.
If you want a fast reliable phone/OS go get a Blackberry. It you the best multimedia phone get an iPhone. If you want to be pissed off everyday and waist $$$ tossing phones against a wall get a Windows Mobile OS phone (theirs plenty of crappy ones out there)
Bob is acting like a 12 year old girl with a stick stuck in her ass. Grow up dude, and get a life outside of your mom’s basement.
@BoobOnTheBone: Congrats on your illegal copy which took 10 years to produce. Or was that provided by the Sammy layer? Graduated in 4 years from community college, eh? Whata pussy.
MAJOR discrepancy between the BGR Report and what the rules actually state on ATT.com
BGR: “AT&T extended this pricing to current iPhone 3G customers who purchased the iPhone 3G in July, August, or September 2008″
ATT: “AT&T yesterday extended this pricing to iPhone 3G customers who will be eligible for a full upgrade in July, August, or September 2009.”
These two statements are NOT the same. I bought my iPhone 3G in August 2008 and my eligibility is invalid until January 2010.
@joe, I have an Omnia, and it’s not slow at all. I would have to say your problem is operator error. I am looking forward to the Omnia 2 though.
I use my phone professionaly. I cannot submit photos to my client taken with a 3 MP camera. I also need to run more than one application at a time. It’s definitely nice that if I’m typing something when someone calls me, what I wrote is still there when I hang up the phone.
If you’re just texting friends and listening to music, then the iPhone fits you like it does all of the high schoolers.
@ Nerdherder
Yes, Im a boob. Sorry that I have wasted everyones time with my incessant ramblings.
agree with sean76
It’s all about the Palm Pre.
@ Bob, If you need to submit professional photos to a client get a digital camera (that’s what there used for, PHOTOGRAPHY). To run applications at the same time Jailbreak your phone and install backgrounder. What your writing when someone calls is still there after the phone call.
@Bob, if you need a business phone go with Blackberry, they can’t be beat. Your Omnia might be fast to start but like anything else windows it will slow over time for no reason.
So many haters… I had an omnia, traded it for a bb 8830. Don’t like wm6.1, not finger friendly. Like bb os. Let’s not forget that the iphone set the bar. Its the #1 selling device for a reason! But the iphone seems to be more trendy lately… Everyone is playing catch-up sine the iphone came out. I wouldn’t get one, but that’s just me…
Do you think Steve Jobs or anyone else cares about the dorks that bash Apple. Let’s be honest, the folks that gripe about the iPhone or a BB or WinMO, aren’t you really all zeros with too much time on your hands? Use what you want and be happy. Live and let live. Anyone who says that any of these devices suck is an idiot. 3 great companies, 3 great stocks. Your opinions don’t matter or count, really.
wow chris, you gotta be kidding me right? 2mp iphones don’t even come close to many cameras on other smartphones lol.
WM isn’t as bad as you say either, yes i’ve used all platforms too.
@Jack Tee, actually your opinions do matter. Just read the AT&T newsletter about “listening to its customers about iPhone pricing”. They restructured there pricing plans based on the opinions of the users. I do agree with you though, they are three great companies but lately WM has been at the bottom of the game. it’s time they step it up if they want to compete with RIM, Apple and now Palm.
@BOB, UR A LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@zephxiii, When it comes to the function of a camera on a “PHONE” there is nothing different about any of them. All i’m saying is the iPhone takes great pictures with the simplest use.
Yes I have used WM for years before Apple and RIM and there OS was horrible and still is horrible. I have to install a new OS on the WM phones several times a year becuase they were slowing. I currently have a Blackberry Bold and iPhone as they both excel in different categories. The fact of the matter is you will never get a single device that will be able to do everything everyone wants. It’s the point of a comments section for people to bit*h and complain about everything?
pre-orders will be shipped to arrive on the 19th … unless you ordered through at&t “premier” in which case you get to wait until next week because at&t is ran by idiots.
If your WinMo is slow, blame the carrier. Get a cooked ROM from xda-developers or ppc-geeks, and it will fly.
Same is true of the iPhone, if you think about it — to get it to do what it ought to do out of the box, you have to jailbreak it.
*shrug*
How About your piss poor comment?
Pissed off is jealous cuz he can’t get an iphone…
@Chris: I think what Jack Tee meant is that opinions that are unaccountable, on blogs and the like, don’t amount to a hill of beans. There is absolutely no reason for them to be heeded and they are certainly NOT the reason for ATTs change in policy. Otherwise, ANY mob can rule (which will never happen)…
Windows Mobile 5 has served me well for 3 years but it is not perfect. Time to throw the MotoQ to the wayside. The iPhone will not be perfect but the interface is superior to any out there…sorry guys…..the iPhone rocks business and pleasure.
are YOU kidding me? are you that ignorant to not know that processors can’t be compared mhz to mhz? what about the 3d acceleration? what about opengl support? what about the app store (granted most of them are lame)? what about USABILITY?!
I was a hardcore WinMo fan up until the Fuze. WinMo is fighting a losing battle win WM6.5. Admit it, it sucks.
I went from WinMo to Nokia and then to Android and honestly Android is the only competitor in town until WM7 shows up late to the party.
Really I wanted to continue being a WinMo fan, and tried every other platform too but I’m not gonna be a dumb lemming while their lagging behind. Maybe if they lose enough customers they’ll wake up and check themselves.
