iPhone / iPod touch activation servers bite it

Ruh roh, Shaggy. According to an unending stream of tips flowing into our inbox, iPhone / iPod touch activation servers just bit it, big time. Apparently Apple and AT&T underestimated the wave of Apple handset users dying for OS 3.0 and the swarm was just too much to handle. If you’re trying to reactivate your phone post 3.0 update, sit tight and things should be back online soon. Oh, the agony.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

the drama continues as Apple middle managers dig under lounge cushions for an extra server that they might be able to hook up now that they shockingly have increased server demand lol
anyone know the COOs yearly salary and bonus?
Itouch bluetooth is a waste, all it supports is wireless headphones….
Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).
Just keep trying to update and it will eventually go through, I had to click update about 20 times before it worked.
those who got through…
are you hitting “Update” over and over again, or are you unplugging the phone from the computer and plugging back in again?
What is your connection? (DSL, Cable)?
4:47 East Coast Time, cannot activate.
I still like Apple’s way of rolling out updates better though.
On my Tmobile G1, I didn’t get my over the air update for 2 days after my friend did. Now THAT’s agony. Watch my friend use cupcake while I couldn’t was WAY worse than having to wait an hour or two for Apple’s servers to catch up.
This is why they should have started the updates at midnight. Thats an extra 12+ hours to download, so that everyone isnt logging in at the same time.
I just downloaded without a hitch!
FIX! WORKS!
At the point at which the software is being extracted (assuming you have been able to download it) turn off your internet connection.
The software installation then proceeds without a problem.
At the point at which you get the message saying “can’t connect to the itunes store” turn your internet connection back on. Then unplug the usb, plug it back in and it it will reactivate.
That does not work.
nice fix.. works, timing is everything
Nevermind, nice trick, I’m the idiot!
Thanks for encouraging me to keep trying. The activation server is just overloaded. I kept retrying to upgrade and, eventually, I hit the open slot. Then just loaded the operating sytems and phone re booted. Now, checking Settings…yada.. About – I have version 3.0 So just keep trying – you can get thru
I’m in Liverpool England and having the same problems….Apple are PLONKDERS!
Wow, I’m surprised no one is blaming AT&T for this. It seems everyone blames AT&T for everything on this site.
@fireskull:
What the hell were you expecting the touch to support for bluetooth?
@ D:
Dude, you are awesome. Thanks!
your welcome
lol…I knew this was going to happen. I just had “that” feeling.
Some learn, some don’t…Apple, apparently, has not learned anything about server and bandwidth capacity. Idiots.
I mean you’re welcome, damn spell check. Spread the word guys…
Whats up BGR?? You got snubbed on the Pre and the Iphone 3G S? Where’s the review????
Because ATT sucks.
Oh, it works alright! @ D.
Thanks a million!
the camera is definitely snappier and the indexing is wonderful.
Strike 3 apple assholes
the shit will start flying AT&Ts’ way as soon as the 3Gs is launched, apple’s server issue is nothing compared to AT&T not prepared for MMS or tethering, simply ridiculous.
