iPhone / iPod touch activation servers bite it
Ruh roh, Shaggy. According to an unending stream of tips flowing into our inbox, iPhone / iPod touch activation servers just bit it, big time. Apparently Apple and AT&T underestimated the wave of Apple handset users dying for OS 3.0 and the swarm was just too much to handle. If you’re trying to reactivate your phone post 3.0 update, sit tight and things should be back online soon. Oh, the agony.

Everyone is anxious to get their new phone before Friday. I am perfectly ok if mine is delivered days late b/c Apple is *notorious* for botched launches.
They simply do not comprehend server needs for a new phone and software launch, and how to plan accordingly. It is amazing some of those guys keep their cushy jobs!
By the way, Apple, feel free to contact me if you want to know how it should be done…since you’re 0 for 3 now.
Honestly, did anyone expect this not to happen? Maybe they should adopt the wave update approach, oh that’s right, you have to update on a computer. I know, maybe a torrent to update? They will eventually learn….
mine is now working..it stopped for like 10 minutes but i just hit update again and now its hopefully finishing the job
It took me a couple of tries, finally downloaded on the third attempt.
It was down for about 45 minutes (west coast) but up and running again (12:45 PT)
They are back up…finishing the update now.!!!
So funny! I taught Apple would never let it happen again after last summer, but man… this is so funny.
I wish I could use iTunes on computer..I’m getting a similar error message just trying to download a song..iTunes giving anyone else problems on their PC’s or Macs??

@D, the first time was funny. The second time was oddly amusing and perplexing. This time it is just plain scary that they cant get something as simple as server capacity right.

Update. East Coast, 4:04 pm, we’re still down. Fully downloaded but won’t install. I love my iPhone and my iPod, I hate Apple, Macs, iTunes and pretty much everything else about them..
Somebody is loosing a job as we speak thought that’s kind of sad.
Then on top of the botched launch, they don’t even have the courtesy to tell us when we should bother checking again…
I got on right after they posted that it was available and it did just fine…
I had a feeling something like this would happen, which is why I bugged my co-worker to try to jump on it the second it was posted. I figured there’d be a bit of a window between the update being posted and everything going to hell.

no go here in st. louis. I have the software downloaded but it won’t install… Apple: the BEST hardware, the WORST software.
yeah is all fuck up i try to update from 2.2 to 3.0 and i couldn’t
Took about 20 minutes and 4 or 5 attempts but finally it activated and all is well… if you are having this problem just hang in there and give it a little bit of time (hopefully just “a little bit” of time).
Am I glad 3.0GM was available last week…
