About that new BlackBerry Messenger… It’s coming to all devices on OS 5.0, newer version revealed
You read the headline right, kids — the new and insanely hot BlackBerry Messenger that we exclusively showed off to the World looks to be headed to all BlackBerry devices that will receive the OS 5.0 treatment. How do we know? Because we’ve been playing around with a recent build of OS 5.0 on a Curve 8900, and well, let’s just say that it and some other pretty awesome stuff is in there. But since we’re talking about BlackBerry Messenger, let’s just get right into it. We’ve already told you that the new Messenger has avatar support, GPS integration (including proximity sensing), the ability to set and group conversations by subject and a way to create a homescreen icon for messenger contracts, but it now looks like even more crazy stuff has been crammed in in addition to a little facelift.
So strap yourselves in, hit the jump and prepare to be green with envy as we show you an even newer version of BlackBerry Messenger!
Since we know that most of you are just going to gloss over the text and check out the ensuing screenshots, we’ll keep the list of what’s newer than new really brief:
- SMS support — You wanted threaded SMS? Well you’re finally going to be getting it!
- PIN barcode scanning — Too lazy to add your friend to Messenger by entering in their PIN? Just have them click the Barcode option on their devices and, you guessed it, a barcode will show up letting the other party scan it with their BlackBerry camera and immediately add that contact to your list.
- Backup/Restore Messenger list to microSD card — What else need we say?

So tell us, you BlackBerry freaks; were you able to make it through this entire post without having a heart attack?

Please for those who have bbm 5.0 installed may extract the bbm .cod files from the handheld by using javaloader.exe
for example:
c:>javaloader -u save net_rim_bb_qm_peer.cod
c:>javaloader -u save net_rim_bb_qm_peer_resource_en.cod
Then share those 2 files with us..
thanks.
when is this update happening?!?! and will it happen to curve 8310?
ooooooooooh i want it noooow!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems neither the new BB messenger nor threaded sms’s are on the currently leaked 5.0.0.93/ .100 OS’s for the 8900……unless I’m missing something here.
So we have to wait for the OS version that BGR has its hands on…
BGR: sharing is caring
can it be use for the curve 8310?? can you send me the link? thanks…
hi all,
there is a huge problem using this messenger on phones that are not supposed to have it. T-Mobile are getting lots of calls for customers who have installed it and its bricked their phones and cannot install any further updates. Please do not install if sent a link from a friend. Go to blackberry.com only or you will ruin your phones…
I got the NEW BBM for my 8900 and it works GREAT.. =)
i got the NEW BBM for my 890 and it works GREAT!

Hello there, I downloaded this app and installed it, but i can’t find the icon of the bbm ( old nor new) Helpppppppppppppppppppppppppp!!!! please.
=)
i have been useing it on my 8320 for a couple of weeks and i havent had a problem yet
I got the dreaded white screen of death
OK; did the OTA download, and while it shows that it is on my app list, I cannot see the icon nor run BBM5.0 on my Tour running 4.7 . . . . what gives?
I had the leaked version from a few months back and I installed the new official version for my tmobile 8900 (mistake), it doesnt look as slick as the leaked version that BGR has screen shots of =( Any idea why?
It did it to me too. I had to reload my OS. I am afraid to try it again. I downloaded it from App World. Crashed my Tour.
Okay So I am running on OS 4.6 on my Bold (AT&T) All I did was go into the App store & searched the Blackberry Messenger in the App store the download it after it installed and did what it had to do, BBM was gone from my menu then I rebooted my phone still no BBM then what did was go back into the App store and instead of the download button now what showed up was a run button so I “click” on it and it gave me and error message. What I did was pull my battery out and let it sit for a while. The put it back in when it powered on BBM was back in my menu and up and running 5.0…
Don’t know if this will work for everyone but I thought I might as well tell you guy what I did and hopefully help some of you guys out there…
Hoped it helped =)
When will we be able to change font & font color?
so you can’t just view a bbm picture, you have to save i first? this is a terrible feature.
anyone else having this issue?
I had the old leaked version 5.0.0.8. I upgraded and lost
1. location support
2. facebook integration
3. avitar stuff
I’m using bell 8330 4.5.0.127
any explanation
Just installed it no problem on my 8900…but it doesn’t seem to have the same options as the screenshots above (as someone already noted)… is anyone else having this problem?
Works great on my Curve 8310. Was wondering if anyone knew if there would be an update soon to have notifications shown on the top right corner just as the old messenger had.
@blake: Yes all of my friends on my BBM that upgraded have this problem. It is very annoying. Everything else is perfect except for that.
