WiMAX gets official in Atlanta
Oh hi, 4G. Despite already having been live for over a month now, Clearwire has just made WiMAX’s presence in Atlanta, Georgia official. One of over 15 cities that are covered or will be covered between now and the end of 2010, Atlanta might be considered the biggest launch to date. With 1,200 square miles and approximately 3 million people now covered in Atlanta, the city is also a major hub for air travel in the US. In fact, this WiMAX launch is made even more significant by the fact Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is constantly plagued with massive delays. Got eight hours before your connecting flight will actually take off and don’t feel like rewarding the airport by paying for Wi-Fi while it makes you wait? WiMAX subscribers are good to go. As far as pricing goes, Atlanta lines up with other WiMAX-covered territories; home Internet plans start at $20 per month, mobile plans start at $40 per month and day passes are available for $10.

Yep. They have booths at all of the major malls now and they’re pushing as hard as they can. The mobile modem is only compatible with Windows for now, though. So, don’t get excited if you have a Mac or Linux machine. They also offer a home phone plan, for people who want to cut the cord completely.
Let’s hope they can keep up with the sales…
I live in Atlanta and a pretty agressive salesman came by my work yesterday. It seemed like an okay deal.I’m actually thinking about it for home use.

How did the Beta and HD DVD do…
Laz: I’ll bet you have an AT&T wireless account. This isn’t about the gadgets.
I googled Wimax Atlanta and the first result was WimaxAtlanta.net… on that site it says you can get unlimited home and mobile internet for $55 a month. Phone is suppossed to be $25 more. Does it work like that?
Wish I could get this in VA!
Got WiMax here in Portland. A Clear guy will be here in an hour or so – blazing speeds 10% of the time, more like dial-up 80% of the time. The other 10%? I can’t connect or the two modems I have are unable to connect or are rebooting. Good stuff? Glad I didn’t sign up for a contract…
Atlanta, don’t succumb to the hype.
I called the guys at http://www.wimaxatlanta.net and they explained the whole process to me in just a few minutes on Monday. I received a confirmation email with exactly what they said would happen and I already have my box delivered to me by UPS. It’s so simple.
i might check this out….if it turns out to be cheaper than comcast
I would ask for Michael or Richard when you go to wimaxatlanta.net….it’s new in Atlanta, but they have been working with the company for 3 years…the staff is very helpful too….2 products for the price of 1 gauranteed.
@ Chris, I’m a happy VZW customer….
Laz, there hasnt’t been any declared 4G plartform for the U.S., so the beta and HD DVD argument seems like your reaching or hating, maybe both
@ Don Louie Cantone, no hating but with everything I’ve read it seems that LTE will be the the bandwagon that most will jump-on…
Sprint’s WiMax service is live many places, but if it hasn’t been launched in that market, you can’t use it or sign up for it, but subscribers from announced markets can access it in other places, even some which haven’t been announced or launched.
I hope that made sense…
Basically, if you live in a launched market, you may get service while in other markets that haven’t been launched yet because they have service, but haven’t started selling it yet for that particular locale.
christexaport, can you clarify the spectrum and capacity issues for both standards? VZW brought it up in the wrong article
WiMAX? Why, indeed! Define “many places”, christ-complex. A CURRENT total of 4 or 5 cities? With a total of another 10 to be added by the end of NEXT year? Enlightened (or dishonest) as usual.
LTE will have slower connectivity rates than WiMax, and also further behind in infrastructure. However, LTE is being rolled out by the big boys, Verizon and AT&T, while, even though Clearwire is owned by Sprint, Google, etc….no one has heard of them. Good news is that the future is near. With cable companies investing in Clearwire, you’ll soon be watching HD tv as well as surf the internet and have your home phone all connected to a wireless network like LTE or WiMax.
I don’t believe there will be problems with speeds on LTE, it’ll just be getting it out and the penetration of the signal. WiMax has the same problems but it’s being rolled out and working, you hear more people extolling it than not
I believe WiMAX will cure cancer. It has no other sales pitch.
@McGuire, I would buy if it would give a full-sized SUV 40 MPG…
And having service with vzw is great value for individuals and families, the difference between my statement and the two previous ones is it comes directly from advertising. If WiMax wasn’t associated with Sprint you all wouldn’t be bashing and vzw would still be looking at EVDO rev.B and EVDV.
VZW may not be the cheapest service available, but I can’t count on getting service in the burbs where my work Sprint phone won’t along with AT&T…
mcguire is right. doesn’t matter who the investor is. what’s the sales pitch?
So because one friend has a bad phone in your area, you’ll use that as the standard for all service, how short-sighted. We’ll see how well the 4G race pans out but not for another few years so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show
