BlackBerry’s newest BlackBerry Messenger client is beautiful, functional

Barely any major updates since launching way back on those now sure-be-stuck-in-a-landfill BlackBerry 7290s, RIM’s latest version of BlackBerry Messenger — unreleased to the public — is absolutely awesome. They’re finally getting hip, people. Here’s some of the new features and enhancements we’ve find while quickly playing with it:
- Avatar support — set your own avatar using the Camera or saved photo on your device (this is displayed locally as well as shown next to your Messenger name on your friend’s buddy list)
- GPS location integration — you can now set permissions so friends can always see your location, have to request it each time, or never can see it
- Proximity sensor — we’re guessing this will let you know if you’re within a certain distance of friends (pending, of course, you’re both set to share locations freely with each other)
- Set conversation subjects — this will allow you to organize your convos on the main Messenger screen and label them with subjects to keep track of all your conversations
- Homescreen support — you can pin/sticky actual Messenger contacts directly to the homescreen for easy access!
There’s a bunch more we’re probably skipping over, but hit the jump for some shots of the new version of BlackBerry Messenger!

Rubbish they just panned the new N97. You don’t like the coverage here, go to another site.
It sounds like you guys are blind or something. This is the thu tuh thu tour, the silver metal on the side bares it all. And the buttons don’t go over the side-edges as on the Onyx. Its the tour!!!!! That does not necesserilly mean that the Tour is gonna have it come release time, but its going to be incorprated in any upgrade some time.
Sorry Tmo guys, its the tuh tuh tuh Tour!!!
@JoeTour
It’s not the tour. Look at the next post on the site, it has a picture of a tour. Compare it to the phone in this post. Look at the beveled edges at the top of the phone and the bottom row of the keyboard. I thought it was a tour at first too
is it possible to download the new messenger??
Soooo cool..i am looking forward to this..
@ codemaker
Is It the atlas? The onyx dosent have the silver metal around the buttons, it totally overlaps the side rim.(-the onyx) as a matter of fact, check out youtube and you’ll see that there is 2 types of the Tour, at least the reviewer thinks so, in the search box type in “I got my 2′nd BlackBerry tour” and you’ll see what I’m referring to. This pic may not be the Tour that its widely circulated But it is a far cry from the Onyx.
@JoeTour
Yeah, I have seen that video. Both of those devices are the tour. This device looks more similar to the onyx than the tour. Although this device looks different from crackberry.com’s onyx photos. The keys on the keyboard are shaped differently (or at least they appear to be). This could just be because they are pre-production devices and the design has changed.
This could also be a completely different device (driftwood or atlas or something else), but I would that that to be unlikely. Either way, I am almost certain this is not a tour.
Looks great! One question…legistlation just passed in NC that you wont be able to text and drive at the same time. Will there be a way to talk to text with our BB messanger contacts??? Just a thought!!!
I’ve been waiting for gps location sharing in BBM. For us who are shafted by AT&T and can’t run Blackberry Maps. Kudos to RIM
dear all ,
how can i download the new bbm ?
How about adding some more smileys?! Sleeping Smiley, Eating Smiley, Maybe even some sexting Smiley’s? A applause smiley!!!
@The Boy Genius
In image 6 you show “Recent SMS Contacts”. Could we get a bit more information about what this is? Is it the long-sought threaded messaging?
Fuck updating BB messenger. Its functional as is. How bout updating the SMS? Its anchient and that’s what if much rather see updated on my BB. Come on, even LG dumbphones have chat style texting!
That’s nice that their updating BB messenger. But Its functional as is.
How bout updating the SMS? Its anchient and that’s what I’d much rather see updated. Come on, even LG dumbphones have chat style texting! The kind where you don’t have to go and open each individual text… It gets irritating, expecially when your BB gets laggy from intense texting.
When is this releasing?? and will it work on OS 4.6???
Ommmggggg!! I’m dying. I saw this yesterday and check everyhour. Lmao. I’m obsessed and impatient. Always looking for bew apps for bb. I dont c a date? No date? Where’s the darn dateeeeeee??? We need a date? You cnt leave it in the open for us to wonder?? Datttteeeee…. Oh and thanks btw
What is the estimated release date? How can it be loaded into Blackberry? Upgrading from the current one or its a brand new download or releasa attached to the new O/S (4.6?)
Thanks.
get a life …. or get another bb who has storms anyway sigh
Wow, it looks pretty nice; but the question is..:
Will this be available for BB Curve or BB Pearl (8100, 8110)?
‘Cause i have a BB Pearl 8110, and i want this upgrade. Will this work on my BB? Or mine is too old? u_u
Please answer my questions!

Im running on 4.6 on my 8900 and clicked on the link and downloaded the BBM 5.0 .it worked fine for me (: but i thought there was threaded sms and im not sure but i think im missing some other things too for the bbm5.0 or i guess i still need to play around with it more lol .. and also when will the 8900 update to 5.0 so that im not on 4.6 and i have a 5.0 BBM hehe …..sorry im new (:
i want this now uugghhh i cnt wait
hi all,
there is a huge problem using this messenger on phones that are not supposed to have it. T-Mobile are getting lots of calls for customers who have installed it and its bricked their phones and cannot install any further updates. Please do not install if sent a link from a friend. Go to blackberry.com only or you will ruin your phones…
I think its lovely
Google has Maps for the Blackberry
