Verizon’s HTC Touch Pro gets firmware update, GPS unlock and Visual Voicemail included

PhoneNews is reporting that Verizon Wireless has approved a firmware update for the xv6850 Touch Pro. As promised by Verizon Wireless late last year, this firmware update will unlock the GPS on the handset, allowing owners to use Google Maps or Windows Live Search instead of the proprietary and costly VZ Navigator. The firmware update also adds Visual Voicemail support to the phone, a feature that requires a $3 monthly fee and EVRC-B codec support which improves call handling. The update is not available through Verizon Wireless or HTC yet but it is being offered early by Phone News. For those Touch Pro owners who have not already hacked their phone to unlock the GPS, hit the read link to obtain the firmware update — at your own risk of course. Samsung Saga and Samsung Omnia owners – hang in there and hopefully a similar update for your crippled handset is right around the corner, too.

This has to be a typo.. Verizon doesn’t want you using services they can’t charge you extra for.

As usual, Verizon Giving updates to Its HTC Devices long..long after theyve been released. Maybe they can unlock better performance too.

You would hope that doesnt squash hopes of a Touch Pro 2 on Verizon anytime soon..why update a device if your going to replace it.

Yeah and AT$T gave you that phone and provides services free of charge, and so does Apple with all those apps….is that the only drum you’ve got to bang? I looked at this comment chain simply because I knew you would post a negative comment, and sure enough, you fit your M.O. perfectly.

I’m fascinated by this. VZW does greedy shit, and they get bitched out.

VZW unlocks a features that they’ve kept locked down for (literally) years and… they get bitched out.

Truly, fanboys are whiny little dipshits who can never be pleased. The only reason I wasn’t happy about it is because I’ll have to wipe data.

PIM Backup (pops), however, means I won’t lose any of the data that I care about.

All in all, this is a good thing. This is something to be happy about. You fanboys are fucking pathetic, whether you have VZW or not. You’re morons.

Why is the keyboard split at N and M with the up arrow? Man that is a TERRIBLE design. I definitely prefer my Fuze/Touch Pro on AT&T.

BoogerEater, you are quite the fool to be paying 10 a month for navigation when everyone knows GPS is free. Either get googlemaps for free or go and buy TomTom for Winmo, and stop throwing away money for a subscription that should have never been please.

Rob: The keyboard’s split because Verizon’s version uses a differrent keyboard (and larger keys) than everybody else’s version. Compare the vanilla keyboard to Verizon’s interpretation. I don’t agree with it, but that’s why.

I was thinking Matt deserved the title instead of booger for his inane line about “verizon fanboys.” I really haven’t seen any of those folks here and I darned sure haven’t seen anyone claim verizon doesn’t lock functions. Everyone knows they do, but many of us stick with them because in our respective areas they have the best network. Matt sounds like a typical ifanboy who is trying to reconcile the poor profuct announcement yesterday with ATT’s crippling of the iphones and gouging of the fanboys.
