Canadian iPhone user? Here’s what you need to know

Okay, listen up. There’s a ton of Canadian BGR readers out there so we’re going to spend a moment letting you know what the real story is with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S in the Great White North. Both Rogers and Fido will be carrying the new iPhone 3G S and just like in the US, it will be available as of June 19th — same pricing, too — the 16GB model going for $199 and the 32GB model going for $299. On the same day, the price of the iPhone 3G 8GB will drop to $99. Furthermore, the 6GB/$30 iPhone data promo will be back in full force (albeit for an unspecified limited time). iPhone users can tether as well, provided their plan offers 1GB or more of data which is fair enough because if you’re still on the 500MB plan as of today, you’re pretty much a sucker (we kid, sort of). As for MMS, a new iPhone value pack has the feature covered and will be offered when OS 3.0 launches on June 17th. This brings us to perhaps the best news — if you already have an iPhone 3G from Rogers or Fido and are not eligible for an HUP to snag an iPhone 3G S, you will be able to purchase one with no-contract pricing.
Happy, Canada?

correction.. the reason the 3gs is an upgrade is because of the fingerprint resistant finish.. thats worth at least 3 to 4 hundred so apples cutting you guys a break..
ya i wonder if they will let me keep my BB plan even though im gonna pick up the iphone and trade in my 1gb/$30 for the 6gb/$30 promo.
Save your money. Anyone who is upgrading from the iPhone 3g is just wasting money.
what’s a HUP?
nop , you can’t use a blackberry plan on iphone. iphone plans are specific you can’t get the 6GB plan on blackberry either its a promo for the iphone and android phones only. blackberry plans are different. however if you are talking about voice plan only you can use any voice plan you want on the iphone. but the value package is different.
I think the 6gb/$30 is a good news especially that tethering is allowed with no extra cost.
I will be getting the 3GS
well since its robbers im guessing 499/599 for the iphone S, i signed a new contract in jan, so im basiclly screwed, i have a 8900, and the 6gb, but i want to tether it so then i can finally get up to 1gb every month, but ill see if i can work my magic on robbers and get 100 or 200 off the no contract price, its been done before lol
I really don’t care if t he no-contract iphone GS comes upto $700-800. I am use to paying that for unlocked phone (also it better be unlocked). If not I will stick with another 3 year plan and get the phone unlocked.
well currently Robbers and fido is the only GSM in Canada anyway Fido is owned by rogers so only reason you would want to unlock it is that you can use it when you travel and for that you could use a Turbo unlock. i’m not sure if rogers would sell the no contract iphone unlocked but my guess is highly unlikely because they want you to use it on their network, but unlocking is not that hard anyway. I think the option of having to be able to buy it retail is pretty good as long as the price is right, because you can always sell your existing iphone 3g for 300-400 depending on the condition so at the end you are probably looking at paying no more than 200-300 + your previous phone so if you think that new 3Gs is worth the 200-300 extra and the excitement of a new shiny phone then go for it.
its laughable to think that robber or fido would sell unlocked phones, or any carrier in north america, so no you wount get a unlocked iphone from rogers or fido, or at&t, so your going to have to pay up just not to have a contract with them
@celz doesn’t know that he’s taking about. Talk about bending over backwards. It’s faster, but doesn’t matter? Um, no, that would be stupid to say – oh, yeah, you said it.
I bought this Ferrari that can go 180 mph. But I can’t drive two cars at once, so I can’t drive it fast.
7.2 3G is being rolled out now. Sure, lots of places won’t have it for a while, but does the phone stop working before next year? It doesn’t cost any more than the original 3G. And if you think dumbphones can do what the iPhone can do, then I’d say it’s not the phone that’s dumb.
thats quite ignorant. why do people like you call someone or something gay when they mean dumb or stupid?
oh well. i should just look at the source it came from i guess.
knock it off.
and before you ask, yes i am gay and that is really offensive
@Dylan:
So hypothetically speaking. I wonder on into a fido store and i tell one of them cash register monkeys that my contract is up in august and so i want the new iphone and the 6gb/$30 promo instead of the 1gb i have now. They will tell me that sure can have the phone, but not the promo because i have a blackberry activated on my plan? Is this what ur saying?
My voice plan is the City Fido grandfather plan so im not sure if that will make a difference in their decision.
thanx D.
@maxpayne79
well the monkeys will be like sure you can get the iphone, just sign on the dotted like for 3 years, and you get your iphone for either 199 or 299 keep your plan and add the 6gb promo data pack. i have the SOC Code for the blackberry and Iphone on my account so when and if i switch from blackberry to iphone and back (i like switching phones a lot) i am good to go, but you can always call tech support to get that added on for you
P.S they will try to change your plan off the grandfathered plan DONT DO iT and make sure you tell them NOT TO, had it happen to me when i upgraded in
Curious…I’m just south of your border in NY. Can i purchase a 3GS in Montreal from either Fido or Rogers (don’t know if either or both are available in Montreal)and use it solely within the US, without getting hit with any crazy roaming or out of network charges? Also, some poster above seem to be ecstatic with the 6GB for $30.00 plan. In the US, it’s unlimited data for the same price, but no tethering. If I’m not planning on tethering, isn’t the unlimited for $30 a better deal (unless I’m not fully understanding what the 6GB is all about)?
@maxpayne79
sure you can no problem. i’m not sure how long the promo is going to last this time. I know last year they said they will have the promo until the end of july but they extended the promo all the way to September I believe it was. so I don’t know how long the promo is going to last this year but if you are serious about getting the iphone 3GS just jump on the promo deal and they might or might not charge you for 1 month remaining contract that you have left with them
I have some intersting news for you guys. guess what Tmoblie Netherlands have revealed the CPU and Ram Spec I know that apple was pretty tight lip about that but some how T-mobile Netherlands revealed the spec,here it is:
256 MB RAM
600 MHZ possessor
so the ram is up from 128 to 256MB
and Possessor is up from 400 Mhz to 600 MHZ
this is pretty good.
here is the link: http://www.t-mobile.nl/iphone/specificaties.html?WT.ac=sc_iphone2_specs
@g-thing; @Dylan:
That’s incredible news for me. Thanx for that guys.
I used to have the 6/30 plan the last time they offered it but when i went to sign up for the BB account, they told me it’s not possible to keep it. And so my logic is If i couldn’t keep it the first time, why would they let me keep it the second time?
And what’s a SOC code?
I wanna use both phones on one plan. Not at the same time but switch em around. Like u g-thing. I just didn’t think it’s possible to have a BB plan and the 6gb for $30 plan at the same time.
ps….can i get the 6gb/$30 plan without getting an iphone?
Dylan,
Went to the Netherlands website but cannot locate any of that info you posted as to CPU specs, etc…
Here is the FACTS:
If you have a BB data plan you can use this with absolutely no problems on an iPhone.
Unfortunately it does not work the other way around.
I’ve been doing it for months now, with no additional cost.
If Robbers customer service tells you otherwise, they are either lying or misinformed.
agreed
“7.2 3g wont be available until after the next iphone comes out.”
No, Rogers is already on a 7.2 system.
That said
If your;e willing to pay ~$450 for what amounts to a MINOR hardware upgrade at best, then I have some land in Florida you might be interested in.
