Canadian iPhone user? Here’s what you need to know

Okay, listen up. There’s a ton of Canadian BGR readers out there so we’re going to spend a moment letting you know what the real story is with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S in the Great White North. Both Rogers and Fido will be carrying the new iPhone 3G S and just like in the US, it will be available as of June 19th — same pricing, too — the 16GB model going for $199 and the 32GB model going for $299. On the same day, the price of the iPhone 3G 8GB will drop to $99. Furthermore, the 6GB/$30 iPhone data promo will be back in full force (albeit for an unspecified limited time). iPhone users can tether as well, provided their plan offers 1GB or more of data which is fair enough because if you’re still on the 500MB plan as of today, you’re pretty much a sucker (we kid, sort of). As for MMS, a new iPhone value pack has the feature covered and will be offered when OS 3.0 launches on June 17th. This brings us to perhaps the best news — if you already have an iPhone 3G from Rogers or Fido and are not eligible for an HUP to snag an iPhone 3G S, you will be able to purchase one with no-contract pricing.

Happy, Canada?

    Why is it good news that people can get it for retail price? Can’t anyone just pick it up for full price without a contract?

    I re-upped to 3 years for the 3G about 9 months ago. I’m willing to pay full retail for the 3gs as long as it doesn’t require another 3-year, which would seem logical, but hey, it’s Robbers after all.

    But, maybe I’m being too optimistic in trying to get out of my contract – what are the chances there will be a reasonable GSM competitor in the next 3 years? Probably zero.

    @ Curly: No. Rogers forces a three year deal on anyone wanting to bring any iPhone to their network. I looked into bringing a used, unlocked phone over and they told me 3 years no matter what.

    The no contract price is a major step for them… I’m hoping it means there might be an option for a 2 year deal at a slightly higher price which would reel me in. 3 yrs? No.. 2? Maybe.

    agreed it is but carriers are out to make money not bend over backwards everytime a new model comes out. im already with my KY jelly jar and credit card so i can upgrade to the 3GS

    the big difference in the 3GS from 3G is plenty to justify a purchase. as long as i can use winterboard ill be fine

    whats the price of the no-contract one? i think its the most important infos in this news… we already knew it was 199$ and 299$ … now we want to know the price of the no-contract iphone 3Gs

    @joseph,

    I don’t see what the big difference between the 3G and 3GS is that warrants forking out a few hundred dollars. If I were a 3G owner, I would just stick with it and get OS 3.0. That’s the big deal, not 3GS in my opinion.

    Anyways, enough Apple news BGR, it’s getting boring. Write a real review of the Pre, and perhaps more upcoming BB news.

    If they’re anything like AT&T, contract required regardless if you pay full price or not. Basically the 32gb phone is really $899 with the ETF. They can keep the phone. I bought my Bold for full retail and then activated it on AT&T with no contract. The price of the phone caught up with their over priced desktops and laptops. The new pricing and contract requirement is a joke and I hope their sales reflect it.

    Yeah I fail to see why anyone who has a 3G would be willing to fork over another ~500 bux for the 3GS. The most compelling updates are in the new OS which is avail free. You’re basically paying 500 for a compass, a faster processor which you won’t really use and a 3.2 m camera. Pretty crazy considering you can get 10 MP cameras for under 200 bux. I didn’t realize Apple had become a charity with people are falling over themselves to donate money for no apparent reason.

    tethering won’t cost anymore, 6gb of data is 6gb of data, rogers doesn’t care how you use it.

    I find it amusing when people say canada is behind the times with cellular.. yes there are 3 year contracts, but at launch we get MMS, tethering and most major areas already have the 7.2mbps 3.5g.

    the 3gs is what the 3g should have been well its what the 3g is.. a faster processor will have virtually no use since you cant multi task, a 3.2 cam still sucks especially with no flash, gps will provide compass, and 7.2 3g wont be available until after the next iphone comes out.. and whats even sadder os 3.0 only adds features dumbphones have had for years..
