The reason why AT&T won’t support MMS with the iPhone until “late Summer”, tethering info!

We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)

    fine print!!!

so at&t is going to cut their ridiculously expensive text messaging plans and roll them into the $30/month mandatory iPhone 3G data plan (the same as every other carrier does)?

LMAO… I love how every iPhone user is just so pissed off today. I’m so glad I never got on the iPhone wagon. And with AT&T just digging-the-knife-in a bit more with their retarded data plan structure, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these users left for the Pre, or in my case, just enjoy my Blackberry Bold and look forward to the Blackberry Tour :-)

Oh please AT&T with the tethering! Some third party will need to get this going and tell AT&T to jump in a lake.

    @ joe cool

I too was hoping for a new hardware revision. Doesnt really matter because I would NEVER ditch Verizon for a network like AT&T.

All these systems are, are giant databases. You are selecting a code from a list, that is stored in sub table from the original table where the client information is stored. Run a routine based on the iphone plan to isolate all customers, run another subroutine on the features table to find all opt out codes with an inner join based on customer id from original query and viola, DELETE. that is all it takes.

But then again, the issue with doing a mass cleanup like that, someone always gets screwed, or deleted, or added.

I work for AT&T and yes this makes sense. Unfortunately there is a series of codes that are provisioned on the account when and Iphone is attached. I imagine that an entire new series of codes will have to be applied to all users with an Iphone and this will definitely take some time….

I highly doubt AT&T is just going to give away tethering considering the iPhone already destroys their 3G network just using the data-centric apps on the iPhone already.

Is this the kind of Opt Out code one could have removed by, say, calling customer service?

It occurs to me that AT&T could allow CSRs to remove this code manually for customers who call in, and process the rest of the iPhone accounts on their own for as long as they need to.

If I read this correctly though – couldn’t this be corrected by going into the store and taking care of it with a customer service rep?

    AT&T better figure this out…

Back when the iphone didn’t have mms (well it still doesn’t) iphone users were saying who uses mms anyway?
Now that it’s not available on the new iphone, everyone is acting like it’s the end of the world.
    Make up your mind people.

If ALL the customers called to have it done it would take longer due to hold times. Patience is deffinately a virtue here.

@ATT RSC, you sound like a cool and sensible person — I feel for you. It’s corporate policies like this are going to cause AT&T to nosedive once the iPhone exclusivity is gone. I paid an ETF to get an original iPhone — and I’ll certainly pay one to get out of AT&T’s clutches.

WTF? Why would they leave this out in the first place? Maybe at&t’s crappy, so called 3G network couldn’t handle the extra data. MMS must have been to much for the towers. I had a Bold on att and it dropped more calls than iDEN networks in BFE. My iphone did the same, I paid the ETFs just to get back to verizon. Good luck att peeps out there. Enjoy your less bars in zero fucking places.

My BB8830 w/verizon does not have MMS. Can I tell you what a pain in the ass it is when anyone in my family sends me a pic message? I get a message from my own cell number telling me I have a picture message. It does not tell me from whom. I have to load up a VZW web page, log in, and then fumble around the lame messaging pages to find a pic that my phone will sometimes not render. How hard is it to f*”!ing add MMS. My whole family can do it, Smartphones my ass!
