The reason why AT&T won’t support MMS with the iPhone until “late Summer”, tethering info!

We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

this is just ridiculous. mms worked in beta and even when 3.0 was first released. it just last week stopped working for no apparent reason. i am pretty ticked off now. at least my tethering is still working and 100% free. ;)

    Like I said before.
    AT&T, Apple, are you listening?

No matter what you do now, you have proved to be dishonest and deceitful, and don’t seem to care.

Being proven as such, I will never again contract with AT&T or buy another Apple product.

I doubt seriously that I am alone on this now.

ATT is ridiculus and they dont deserve the rights for iphone. They should have given it to a carrier who wouldnt take advantage of its customers and make them think everything would work and then not come through.

I can say this because i had used all the carriers and have been with ATT for over 5-8 years…

    AT.T says:

When we activate a new line of service or upgrade an existing line to an iphone it does put an MMS opt out/restriction on the iphone. There is no way to manually remove this without the system catching it and disallowing it. The idea that AT&T is waiting on legal issues seems absurd, but then again, charging customers for it is even worse. As a sales person for AT&T, it is EXTREMELY difficult to sell something that is outrageous (AT&T navigator that is worse compared to other GPS apps (charges $9.99 a month)), as well as tethering. No one is going to want to pay anywhere from $15-$55 A MONTH for tethering, when they can go home, jailbreak their phone, and pay a one time fee of $30 for the software TO tether.

Ok well i spend quite some time talking to AT&T on the phone tonight. I told them i was a developer (which i am) and also an AT&T contractor (which i am). and this is there response to all my questions
Q=Can you check my service order codes(Soc’s) and make sure the Opt out MMS is not there anymore.
Response= Opt out code is not present. MMS Available
Q=Is the network provisioned to send MMS
R=Yes network is the same to all users, the phone and billing system decide what can make it through or not.
Q= Is there an update to my carrier setting that i can use.
R=Carrier setting 5.0 is the last one available.
Q= can you transfer me to tech support
R= its after 11pm, they are closed
    My R= Wonderful…

So this shows that the opt out is not the problem, and the carrier setting is not the problem. Anyone have input?

Well they other lied to you or it’s more than just a service issue. We’ve been told numerous times that the towers cannot support MMS in regards to the iPhone but I always thought that was absurd. With jail broken phones you can access MMS easily. In regrda to recieving, you must go to the website. So I may be that APPLE is having problems integrating MMS properly into their phones. And if my sources are correct, tethering will be an additional $30 a month tagge on to Whatever other features you have. Take into account though, tethering wasn’t made to replace your Internet service provider. It’s more or less for business minded people.

It’s funny because AT&T can’t do basic features. And $70 is rediculous!
Apple should seriously make a contract with verizon. AT&T has failed Many
customers. The iPhone is great, nearly flawless. Just AT&T needs to get on a roll! Geez! I pay almost $200/month for 1 iPhone, I’d expect good services. Right??

    okay guys….
verizon is a piece of shit, end of story.
they’re aggravating as all bloody hell.

at&t is pretty bad, too. but at least they’ve got sim cards. everyone knows sim cards are better and much easier than the crap verizon does.

i agree with all of you that say it isnt worth it to buy the 3g S iphone, you cant use half of the new features.

    however,
just because the outside of it does not look different doesnt mean the inside isnt.

it has a better graphics card, faster processor, and more memory. and a 3.0mp camera.

its worth it for the hardware upgrade but not for $499

i have to say though, pushing its release was bullshit. and at&t should get a move on with their 4g network before they start praising it because face it, everyone will hate it once it comes out unless its prodigious, which it wont be.

i think apple and at&t should have just kept their mouths shut for a little bit longer.

    but in europe,
the 3g S is doing fabulous.

Do u have carrier 5.0 on ur Iphone? I still have 4.0, some people with 5.0 can get MMS. If u have carrier 5.0, how did u get it?

End of summer is technically September 22nd. Word is the new software release will be September 6th or the 8th according to leaks found online. The sources aren’t entirely credible with many saying it’s AT&Ts fault and others saying it’s Apple’s fault. Whatever the case may be, I believe the 3.1 software will drop next week.

In the meantime, all you techno-geeks need to calm down. If you’re going to cry over an MMS date or threaten to switch carriers, then take your problem elsewhere.

I’m just not sure how to view this all, given how long MMS was known to be in iPhone 3.0 before it actually got released, and how much longer MMS has existed as a technology. Nonetheless, I’ll give AT&T the benefit of the doubt. What really gets to me, though, is the fact that the ‘viewmymessage’ web-site AT&T provides to view MMS content is *absurdly* unreliable. I would say that I can actually view less than half of the MMS messages that get sent to me, and the rest of the time I get “a failure occurred during message read”.

I get that MMS might be a challenge for AT&T due to some technical issue people may be generally unaware of… But really, if AT&T is going to jerk customer’s chains this way over MMS, can’t they at least make sure their alternative viewing method actually works? That just doesn’t seem like so much to ask.

personally i hate how att lies to there customers and says that they are not going to give there iPhone customers mms because of neccicary network upgrades. This is what an actuall att supovisor told me after i told them that it wasn’t. The only reason i called because right when 3.0 came out there used to be something that att would turn on your account that allowed u to receive mms. The only way i even know bout this is because i called them and they offered to do that. When i called back mounths later they said that they never allowed that service and that they wouldn’t turn on any mms for the iPhone untill the necicary network upgrades were done. So i asked her what necicary upgrades need to be upgraded. She told me i wouldn’t understand so i told her my profetion is networ administration just try me. She then gave some bulshit excuse that made no science to either of us. Somthing to the tune of the iPhone handles internet differently so they have to do blah blah blah. Anyways thats just my little story of how att blatenly lies to there customers and gets away with it. The minute the fall equnox hits if att doesn’t have mms out yet im finding some way to sue.

Wow. Judging by your lack of grammar, I highly doubt you hold a professional career. OPUS, the operating system all reps use at AT&T stores will not allow the provisioning of MMS on the iPhone. Even if they could allow it, it would not still enable MMS use because you would need the software update provided by Apple. It seems to me your ignorance is another reason why such rumor are floating around. And to say you are going to find some way to sue is another reason why decent criminals can’t be seen in court, because of friviolous lawsuits such as yours. Shutup and wait for the update.

I’m like everyone else. A little frustrated, especially knowing everyone that has a jailbroken Iphone has no issues with MMS. I can wait, but ‘late summer’ is quickly approaching, so I don’t see us waiting that long hopefully.

AT.T: If you really work for the company, I greatly appreciate your insight on what exactly is going on. It’s nice to know that we as consumers are not the only ones that are frustrated.

After the announcement of 3GS in June, we have been told a very simple statement saying “AT&T will be MMS available for iPhone 3G and 3GS (NOT 2G) in late summer. That is all we have been told. I have also found out that there is no set date for the release of tethering for iPhone.

We are bombarded everyday with customer complaining about MMS for iPhone and we know as much as you do. Doing my own research, it seems the MMS update is set for 6th-8th of next week. That is if Apple AND AT&T hold true to their word.

But from experience, there is no way for us to provision MMS onto the iPhone so that it will work properly. Same goes with tethering. If you look at the Apple site, there has to be a certain software update for MMS options and tethering options to be present, so that leads me to suggest it is an Apple issue.

Lastly, MMS and tethering will NOT be available on the 2G, but anyone with a 2G should upgrade anyways…
