The reason why AT&T won’t support MMS with the iPhone until “late Summer”, tethering info!

We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

Sorry, worked for AT&T for years and this is not true. Data Opt out is not used with iPhones, old or new, because that it was they were designed for…data. An opt out has to be added by the user as well, anyone who would have added opt out to an iPhone would have turned the device in to nothing more than a paperweight.

3.1b2 is out for developers and tethering is now gone. MMS is on by default and AT&T says it should correspond with the release for free from what I have been told. No true price yet for tethering but have spoken to people in other countries who use other carriers and they get it for free. I do doubt tethering will be free but if it is something like $10-30 a month most people said they would probably pay. More then that and it becomes too much. I think the $60 or $70 rumors going around may be ok for a family plan where all 5 phones could use it for that price but for 1 phone that is more then the normal data plan. If AT&T gives it for free or even $10 I wont be as mad at them. But for now no tethering until someone else hacks it and MMS is working but not on At&t until they flip their switch. (unless you use the SIM hack which requires another phone)

I called AT&T support today and was transferred to 3 different people–each one acted like I was speaking Esperanto or something. Nobody had any clue what I was talking about. I guess I’ll have to wait until late summer, whenever that is.

    CSR says:

I am a CSR for At&t. First and foremost, I would like to plead with all of you to stop calling for MMS. Our billing system does have a MMS OPT OUT code. This could, theoretically, be changed. However, a code must go in its place. It is a system of checks and balances. If we should add the MMS Capable “SOC,” (these are the codes,) it would cause our network system to rupture. The iPhone uses a different platform made by Apple when sending/ recieving data then our system generally uses. This is why we do not carry particular phones. Also, when the 1st generation iPhone came out, Apple had informed us that MMS would not be possible with our networks. Therefore, we programmed out billing system as such (once again, a system of checks and balances thus caused a need for the MMS Opt Out code.) It isnt that the MMS opt out code prevents you from sending or recieving MMS, it is out network platform. We have to rebuild (again) to allow more data to be pushed through our network. SO to remove the MMS OPT OUT soc and place MMS CAPABLE in its place would do you no good as of now and, in fact, would cause all data to flow incorrectly. So I ask, do you really need to call in to get MMS? Its a waste of time. Send it as an e-mail.

Another ignorant and dumb CSR from AT$T talking. They feed y’all with all these telecommunication jargons and you in turn have the guts to come tell us to stop asking for MMS and use emails as pple are asking for free services from your stupid company. In this age and stage, you should know pple are more concerned about result and not excuses. So shove those excuses up your a!!.

I think I’ll start using that as my sig for my email. That’s one of the lamest things I’ve ever read from a supposed CSR?!

That would be like saying “Can’t include a picture in your email? No problem, send them the link”.

I think it’s pretty sad that my wife who’s using a Motorola Razr is able to send/receive MMS all day long, however my brand spanking new 3GS that *SUPPORTS* MMS doesn’t work on ATT’s network. MMS is one of the main reasons why I bought a 3GS. In fact, she laughs at me all the time about it.. :P

if all new activations should have mms then that’s wrong cuz I got my iPhone 3 days ago only to find out that it does not have mms. why do they advertise mms for the iphone 3gs if it won’t even support mms?

    JeRrYFaR says:

First off, it *IS* supported by Apple. The Iphone has that capability now. Secondly, you said it correctly. We’re PAYING for a service that we’re not getting. That is the bottom line. You can’t walk out of an AT&T store without getting the unlimited data plan, so not supporting MMS is ridiculous, and just another ploy for ATT to get richer. The first thing a CSR will say is “Sir, that does not come with the standard data plan.” Ok, that’s fine. I have UNLIMITED texting that I have been paying a fee at for years. Why do I say that?! Because I can almost guarantee when the phone DOES support MMS under AT&T’s network, we’ll probably see a small fee (if not LARGE) associated with it.

I am so sick of AT&T. They are awful……I can’t wait for Verizon to get the iPhone…..at least I could use MMS on the piece-of-crap $10 flip phone that I used to have.

Lack of MMS is the reason I have not “upgraded” to the iPhone. I have had my Sony Ericsson w810i for 3 years and can MMS all day long! Sure, I cant browse the web as well…but it works! Also, the fact that I will also lose the ability to just change to a local SIM card when I am in Europe does not have me hot to trot.

And to the ignorant CSR @ AT&T: you = FAIL. Get bent and do your job instead of telling consumers what to want.

The sales people at AT&T DO NOT tell any of us that MMS is not available on our newly purchased iPhones, only that we will be saving $30 a month on our phone plans… hmmmmm I wasn’t disgusted with the company until I learned this after buying the phone. I should have just bought an ipod touch and skipped the phone.

i work for a wireless store which supports verizon att and t mobile… soo that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard… guess what? os 3.1 will have the mms. notice there’s no camera icon in your messaging as seen in the pictures… derr. oh and removing the opt out mms codes… mmhmmmbullshit. a computer can be programmed to do that. the system takes 30 days to be re provisioned. stupid yes, true, also yes. soo one day you might get a text from att saying you should update to a newer version of the os to get the mms, til then, have fun… btw it should be the 27th buuut its technology, shit gets pushed back.

ok I just got off the phone with an at&t tech about my visual voicemail. at the end of the conversation he asked as always if there was anything else they could help me with. I said only if you can tell me when mms will be available on my iphone. he said it already is and goes on to tell me about the software I needed to get (3.0). I say well I have that and he says it should be working because some people there had them and it was working on their iphones.
