I dropped my gifted iphone 3G 16g and broke the screen just over 30 days into the contract.

I’m paying the pro-rated early termination fee and moving my business to Verison.

I don’t really don’t need that piece of crap anyway.

Come on people, get a life! AT&T and Apple are just offering new products. If you want to buy one – go ahead. If you can’t afford it – then don’t. You’re not paying for ‘exclusive rights’ to hold on to the best product available for the next 10 years. In fact, it is good that Apple released the Iphone 3G S ONLY a year after the 3G came out. Do you want to live in the stone age just because you paid $200 for it a year ago???
If you can’t afford a Bentley, then don’t buy it. That’s my take on it. We all know that those phones will cost $50 in the next 3 years. You’re overpaying just because you’re buying it close to or on the release date. We all want to just pay $50 and get a brand new iPhone every month, but things don’t work here like that. AT&T is having their way, but you have other options than to upgrade to iPhone. Go with Samsung, Blackberry, LG, Nokia…….
The choise is yours!

Am I correct in the notion that I can buy an iPhone for $199 which is subsidized and requires a 2 year contract and in a year if Apple gives it to Verizon, I can quit and go to Verizon. But I would have to pay a couple hundred bucks early termination fee which is really them just getting their subsidy back?

It sure seems that the AT&T/Apple marriage is destined to end unhappily.

Not only is there the reality that at some point winning the mobile broadband game comes down to unit coverage (which requires carrier polygamy over monogamy), but AT&T’s generally disappointing service and customer care is REALLY starting to weigh on customers contemplating another two years in
this relationship.

So, my wife signed us up through her work at the local BestBuy with Iphones about 2 weeks ago. We paid the $299 for each with a new contract, if I’m within the 30 days we should be able to get a refund for the difference if BestBuy changes their pricing, or trade up to the 3gs? I don’t really think I have a desire for the features of the 3gs, but getting %150 back would be nice…

I am unable to upgrade Online both via Premier website and apple.com due to technical issues.

AT&T Customer care says they are not accepting any more upgrades over phone.

A GREAT phone on the worst network in Southern California. I’ll stick w/ Verizon and my BB Curve for now and pray that Apple realizes that including other carriers will make it THE smart device to own. (Come on Verizon LTE!!)

You are joking right? It is the same with EVERY new phone purchase with ALL of the carriers. If you purchase a phone on a 2 year contract, you normally get $200 or more off the phone price for the contract. If you will buy a phone within your 2 year contract, you have to pay FULL price for the phone. They are not going to just GIVE you $200. It doesn’t matter if it is a phone from Apple or from Joes Electronic Shack. A $200 subsidy is a $200 subsidy.

But, AT&T and other carriers may let you get the new phone at a discount when you are so far within your contract. Usually it is $100 off for an early upgrade.

oh wait, the new iPhone isn’t that special. I think I’ll keep my money and wait for next year when they decide to offer flash, a black bezel, or whatever other stupid feature that should’ve been there all along.

Existing iPhone 3g Customers DO GET A smaller DISCOUNT on 3GS

ITS NOT $599 & $699!!!!!!!!!!!!

So for people on AT&T with iPhone 3g:
iPhone 3GS 16 GB is $399 with reup to 2 years.
iPhone 3GS 32 GB is $499 with reup to 2 years.

The cheaper pricing $199 & 299 is only for NEW customers to AT&T (or people done with their 2 year contract)

you know i wouldn’t mind getting one of them $99 iphones. My contract is up in august and i got 230 fido dollars so i do hope that fido phone plan leak is real cause no matter how lame the iphone may be, the GUI is just too cool and now with the 13″ macbook pro, and Jobs popping up here and there like a ghost of apple past, looks like it’s turning out to be the year of the apple. But the original Unibody macbooks from oct2009 have disappeared off of the apple website. Now they’re all popping up on Craigslist for like half the price. And i gotta say, getting a backlit, 13″, 2.4ghz macbook for half price, is a better deal than getting a brand new 13″ macbook pro, for a full price. They’re pretty much the same power.

Off contract @ $699 I could understand but you’re required to take a two years contract in addition? That news totally changes my mind about buying a 3GS. My bold was $659 off contract. I’m glad to see their phone finally caught up with their desktop/laptop prices. Same hardware found elsewhere with a premium tag associated with the “Apple” name.

I agree with your first half. Completely. But I do not think it’s fair for them to keep coming out with these phone every single year and expect people to upgrade with those prices. I mean we are pretty loyal apple customers and I’m not sure about the rest of them but I’m still feeling the heat of this recession. And to those who are still going to buy it @ full price…it must be nice.

And those who bought the original iphone, at the discounted price, after the 3G came out (I mean it was still selling for a while) 500 dollars for the next level up is very ridiculous.

Yes…that is how AT&T works along with the rest of the cellular phone companies out here in America…sadly to say.

Yea I just tried to upgrade my iPhone 3g, since I am already a customer, it will cost me $400 to get the new iPhone, that is retarded, what happened to last years deal, as long as we re-sign a two year contract we can get it at the discounted price, I mean come on Apple who are these phones most likely going to sell too? Those iPhone users who are going to upgrade there phone? So the prices are wrong in my mind, is there something I am not seeing?

Did you not realize that when you bought the iPhone 3G, AT&T was heavily subsidizing the cost of the handset to you? If you bought an ORIGINAL iPhone you could grab the iPhone 3G 8GB for $99 or the NEW iPhone 3G S 16GB for only $199 since your agreement is up and AT&T (as well as many other carriers) will happily subsidize the price of the phone for you.

You bought an iPhone 3G at $199/$299 and expect to receive the same subsidy one year later after you agreed to a two year agreement? You can upgrade early for a discounted price (still not $199/$299) or pay full retail. This is how the biz works and any phone you want to buy on AT&T will work the same exact way. The reason you feel like you got a deal on the iPhone 3G is because you in fact, if you owned an original iPhone, basically paid the subsidy yourself for the device, thus AT&T being able to afford it with the iPhone 3G.

That’s fair.

Did you guys READ what apple even has in FINE print for these phones even for the “incredibly priced” 8GB?!:

“Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). ”

500 BUCKS FOR THAT LITTLE CRAP 8GB?! Apple is on crack, LSD, and mary-j. They show no loyalty for the “early adopters”…

They subsidized your iPhone 3G, that is why it is so cheap. You signed a 2 year contract so at the end of that you are eligible for another subsidized phone. It works the same with any other AT&T phone, not just the iPhone.

i dont understand why they r punishing early adopters of the iphone 3g – the fine print says they cannot – i repeat cannot- upgrade for the discounted prices and for them the iphone 3gs’s price is 499 or 599. i’m pissed i dont want to wait til july 11th for my new shit!
