Next-gen iPhone video chat gets pictured?

Two new images have emerged which purportedly show off the front facing camera of the upcoming next-gen iPhone. One simply shows the camera in action presumably taking a self portrait while the other is demoing a video chat. Real or fake? More importantly, and considering pretty much no one has cared about mobile video conferencing over the past few years, is anyone looking forward to this feature? Hit the jump for larger shots.

Who even uses video calling anymore?

I can understand it for self portraits, much easier to take a photo with a friend this way.

Fake. Why the hell would they put the camera at the bottom of the phone. That doesn’t make any sense. Plus AT

Unless I read this incorrectly…both of these pictures were faked just to prove how easy it is to fake these pictures on MacRumors…

Definitely real, it looks like an application from Apple, but there isn’t a need. I was waiting to see what Apple came up with before I went with the Pre, but if this is it I’m buying a Pre. My prediction is one background app, which can be switched to by the double tap of the home button but that is just speculation. Unless Apple wows me, Pre here I come.

I keep hoping that the LED on the face is just for information. The lack of notifications without unlocking the screen is its biggest failure.

    Hey Will,

Try out a Pre at a Sprint store – they’re pretty buggy and the build quality is a bit weak.

If you’re intent on a Pre, wait for a few OS updates to stabilize things.

The video conferencing might be a bit weak for the iphone (as a feature), but I’d bet that the faster cpu and additional memory is something every app will (eventually) take advantage of.

I already got the Pre, and I’ll tell you first hand that piece of shit is flimsy as hell. At least with the iPhone you feel like you got something of value in your hands. The Pre feels like shit, and the UI is garbage. Apple holds some kind of credibility when all they do is MENTION a new iPhone and people will dump the Pre to go back.

Believe it son, it’s bound to happen.

I actually have a good amount of friends that are all away at different colleges and its become pretty popular to iChat. They have 4 way video chats. Seems like it could be kind of a cool feature for people that live far away and don’t talk all that often.

doubt at&t would endorse this without an additional feature package they could charge you monthly for the usage though.

and haven’t we learned last go around… all rumors are exactly that. not a single one was close to accurate with the iPhone 3g.

AT&T already has a video share feature, but it’s not two-way. Not a big stretch to imagine that they’d finally make it two-way.

With AT&T’s recently announced upgrade to HSPA (7.2mbps down, 2 mbps up) bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue (assuming the new phone has the support for it)

But I think the first picture looks fake since the guys arm looks like its in the wrong position.

I can see that one you don’t own a PRE and two your lying out of your a$$. They let you play with the phone before you buy and they show you how it works before you leave the store. If the phone was bad like you are trying to make it out to be, please tell me why you still bought it? I’m sure you could’ve 1- just go get an iphone 2- keep your iphone 3- just wait to see what apple will come out with.

So please next time you want to talk sh!t about a phone you dont even own, do so in your head not when logic can clearly tell that you dont own the thing. LOSER

I bet it’s real. They are calling it the iphone video right? I’m sure the name implies more than allowing a feature that was already doable through jailbreaking. Additionally most who uses a mac use iChat and use the video chat feature (at least in my case talking to friends and family while away at school). It may not be needed on a phone yet, but Apple is going to make it so.
