It’s not exactly uncommon for handset makers to resort to strange tactics to manufacture some hype for their products. Something about Samsung’s latest effort however, screams of fear, desperation and longing to have a device that can crush the upcoming iPhone, N97 and Pre. Just take a look at what is written on the Unpackaged website:

Sealed within a multi-layered box, the top-secret new Samsung Mobile phone will be passed between people. Each day, one person will be selected to unpack a layer of the box, winning the new Samsung Mobile phone in the process. The box will then be passed on to the next person, and so on – until 15 June, when one lucky person will reveal the phone to the world at the Samsung Unpacked launch event. Along the way, someone will also win the $5,000 grand prize.

The kicker? Nokia is in the process of doing the exact same thing, though it doesn’t involve a new handset or prize money. Bizarre. The only question we have is what could Samsung have that it thinks is more hype-worthy than the i7500 and Pixon12?
