Why would you want to?

I do honestly wonder why MS lovers hate Apple so much. I understand disliking something, but why do you feel the need to have that 10% that Apple currently has? I’m fine with people using Windows. I use Vista with no problems. Some things are funky, like adjusting to all the old options that got moved around or renamed, but it works just fine.

I like OS X, too. Some things are different from Windows but overall, I like the interface better. It’s just a matter of taste.

Would you say there should only be one company making cars, to bring up a tired analogy? If not, than why should there be only one OS? What’s wrong with having options?

Windows can’t be expected to work as well as OS X because of all the variables. Hardware made by different companies, I mean. If MS only released Windows on MS computers, it would probably be as stable as OS X. And if OS X had to run on 90% of all computers, it would probably be about as stable as Windows.

Windows 7 won’t kill Apple and I don’t see why it has to. Both can co-exist peacefully. Competing companies try to one-up each other with bigger and better products. Then the consumer wins. And so do both companies.

So question for you fine bloggers.

what would it really be like if there were say 4-6 diffrent main stream opperating systems. would it be glorious because everyone could pick what they wanted exactly or would it be horrible because all software would have to be compatible with 4-6 diffrent systems.

how much do you think the cost of software would go up if they had to make with work for everything else. or do you just not consider that having a primary mainstream opperating system like MS proivdes time after time has helped keep computers and software on a global scale relativly compatible.

I am sorry but i have put some good thought into this and i can only imagine software costs for everthing would shoot threw the roof.

you have many choices now but people choose MS cause it works and on a grand scale works quite well.

I play games regularly, so for me choosing Mac over Windows 7 is the “nutsy” option. And just to let you know, I haven’t had a virus on my Windows machines in about 10 years.

I can get the SAME if not better hardware on a PC instead of a Mac for half the price. I can also customize the machine to my liking, or even build my own. I can put Windows 7 on anything I want, no matter who supplied me the hardware.

Why can’t I do that on a Mac? Why do I HAVE to buy what Apple wants me to buy? And your analogy of the life span of hardware is stupid – Macs are pretty much PCs with OSX installed now. There might be small differences, but it’s nothing compared to what it’s used to be.

You say not to knock something before you try it – but have you tried Windows 7? I’m guessing not. Windows 7 is currently solid – moreso than Vista – and it’s only in the RC stage. And with 7, I can run any program I want, including games.

I would love to try out OSX. However, I’m not going to buy a Mac machine just to do so. I’m not a Windows fanboy, I used Ubuntu on my notebook before I installed 7 and I loved Ubuntu. I just don’t like the fact that in order to use anything Apple, you have to go “all in” and buy their overpriced machines. And they do that on purpose – why else do you think they don’t allow you to just go out and buy OSX like you can Windows?

And as far as gaming, please please PLEASE do not come back with “Well I can just install Windows on my Mac and play the same games…” because that just goes to hurt your argument, and show that Windows is available to anyone – even their competition.

Who in their right mind would pick a Windows 7 maching over a Mac is nuts. Viruses are great, so is the hardware not working half the time, and even though you own the computer you are not “allowed permissions” to do what you want with your own machine.

That doesn’t take into the fact that most PC hardware sucks. The average life for a PC is 4 years, a Macs is 7 years. Why is that?

Most people badmouthing Macs either can’t afford one or has never used one. That is plain to see. Once you use one, you know right away why it’s better.

It’s sad most on here have not. How can you badmouth something that you have never used? How does that even make sense? It doesn’t. Which is even sadder still.

Been using beta 7 for a few months on my primary home PC and i’ve grown to love the new taskbar… even annoyed that it’s not on my work laptop (vista ultimate). build 7100 is extremely stable… i’m sorta stoked about the release and the fact (except for my laptop), we’ll just pretend vista never was for the inventory of 225 machines my team supports.

You need to get rid of that 6 year old PC and buy something up to date, Vista runs just fine, Boots in 1:26, never locks up, has none of the problems you describe, if you are having Vista problems look at your old hardware and operator error

The funny thing about this is the idea that people say Windows has fans? and Apple just broke the 10% marketshare point…umm people last I checked there were no macs in africa or in any third world for that matter, in retrospect, compared to Windows computers…that being said they will stay at 10% probably forever and will only be able to go down and not up because there are certainly more poor people than rich people in this world if memory serves me right. No one in their parts of the world (and most in this part as in North America) is checking for a mac in this economy and when the economy gets better only people here will check for it if that. Personally I think Win7 might go a long way to keep the market share difference even at a further distance.

I think the reason people stick with MS, even through the crappy OS’s is because it’s familiar. Do you realize how many people just don’t care what system their computer runs? I would imagine that the population of people that could actually sell the benefits of a Unix platform to someone willing to listen to what the differences are, is much smaller than anyone who really gives a S*** about those differences.

I, like many people, buy a computer to do certain things: internet, media management, and maybe a few games. I know that if I walk into a Best Buy or Fry’s and tell the associate what I want to do with my PC, they’ll take me to a unit running Windows. They might try to sell a Mac, but at the price, it probably won’t sell to a casual user on a tight budget (the majority of the country).

I’m not saying a Unix, or Unix-like platform is better or worse than anything microsoft or apple puts out, I’m just not familiar with the product, and I have more important things which need my attention besides trying to learn a new comp OS and what’s compatible with it.

Don’t you people understand that Microsoft gaining back it’s market share isn’t a good thing.
This is not a Apple vs. Microsoft thing.
This is a Microsoft vs. Unix, Unix-like thing.
I wish people would choose something other then Microsoft, it doesn’t have to be apple.
Microsoft has a history of making bad products, I’m not trying to make this a big debate, nothing man made is perfect; but Microsoft is the farthest from it. While Windows 7, is shaping up to be a pretty solid Windows OS.
Vista was horrible when it first came out, and I just wish M$ could have lost more market share to Unix, and Unix-like OS, at that time.
But people tolerate Microsoft’s mistakes they talk bad about vista, but they sure run down to frys, or bestbuy and buy a new HP. Meanwhile Apple has to be damn near perfect to get anyone’s vote.

Someone please explain why I have to enable telnet in Windows Vista, but I can just ssh directly into my routers/switches from OSX, or Linux from the terminal…

OK, now that’s out the way, let’s focus on your issue.

Windows 7 is far superior to Windows Vista. Though there are many core changes to Windows 7 – performance, stability and driver support – the look and interface are literally parallel of Windows Vista; there are a few new GUI changes but they are very welcomed by me, at least.

You can upgrade from Vista to 7, and if you’re not happy with it (which I highly doubt), you can always roll-back the upgrade.

Also, you have no right to bad-mouth a product/service you have not tried. Try Windows 7 – follow the instructions from Microsft, if needed – and you will be happy Windows user.

I know I am; been using 7 since Alpha builds, was happy with Beta and so happy with RC that it is my primary OS now. Enjoy!

@AgBand, thanks, I considered that, but Vista has been such a disaster for me that I dont want to tinker with a pre-release product, especially one from from MS. I’m pissed that I have to put more money in MS’ pocket to get W7, but I simply have to get this POS OS off my PC. I am, however, very VERY worried that W7 is basically the same core program as Vista Ultimate Crap. I cant deal with 2 more years of system lockups every 5-10 minutes.

Lol although a reboot every 2 hours would be nuthin’ to deal with, compared to the nightmare performance of Vista Ultimate Crap.

I have a new macbook and use win and osx!
They are both good operating systems. I cant wait for snow, should be great. You do pay much more for the apple but the build quality is great. I drive a porsche and i know cars that cost half as much can kick the crap out of mine! Once again I like the quality, that’s what you pay for.

@ DigDug: Actually you don’t have to wait the 143 days if you are willing to try the Windows 7 RC1. It is freely downloadable through the Microsoft website. The only deal is that the temporary license expires in June 2010. Beginning in March 2010, you would begin seeing Windows reboot every 2 hours with a reminder that your temporary license will expire in June 2010. I am currently running it on a test machine and it seems pretty solid. If you absolutely cant wait 143 days, then you can try that route if you feel comfortable enough to put it on your computer

Don’t get me wrong; Mac makes some excellent hardware. But they need some competition to keep them competative…
