Third generation iPhone goes for a spin in Hong Kong?

Here’s the scenario: Two guys hit the streets of Hong Kong at 3AM in their sports car and snapped a bunch of pics of the yet-to-be-announced third generation iPhone. Sure it sounds crazy, but crazier things have certainly happened. The shots of the next generation iPhone purportedly show off the auto-focus feature of the camera, shown above (note the blue box), which can apparently be fine-tuned by touching the object of interest on the screen. Also shown is the compass application, the new battery meter with percentage, the option to copy items and the ability to send an MMS. There are no actual pictures of the phone and everything is a bit blurry which, according to the poster, was a requirement for him to be able to get his hands on this yet-to-be-released handset. Hmm. Is this a bit of trickery or are these blurrycam shots really real? You be the judge — sound off below with your critiques/comments and hit the jump for more shots.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

    Wow, those updates are super lame! If you are really going to take digital photographs, get a real freaking camera!

    The new iPhone hardware and the 3.0 update aren’t anything special for sure!

    What’s funny that every year a company brings out a new phone with more features that half you guys don’t even use. It’s exactly why this world is the way it is. Don’t make things better just put more features or more power or whatever. I’ve had every phone you can imagine and you know what they were all missing one thing simplicity. Some of you guys talk as if you got money in this. People it’s just a phone. Don’t get me wrong I like technology just like the next person but seriously this is becoming lame. Even if a phone had everything you needed in it you find something to complain about. Grow up and this isn’t directed to anyone but you know who you are. Not a fan boy just want a decent product that’s worth the cash. Isn’t it weird that a phone that doesn’t have half the things most phone come out the gate with is killing everyone else? Because most people don’t need all the bullshit you guys are arguing over. Apple went left while everyone else went right and now everybody wants to go left to catch up. But what most people don’t realize that it’s all about marketing. Who does it better than Apple. If you find one I will call you a liar. Apple is making every phone company step they game up. Period. One question are you proud of yourself when you figure out a phone that comes with a book to show you how to work it?

    Come on, u don’t get much simpler then an iPhone. It’s intuitive. The pre looks good but let’s be honest,build quality is lame. Competition is good, apple needs it to give them a kick up the arse. Apple have great hardware but don’t capitalize on it. I think the iPhone is the best phone but the fact that apple could have updated the features a year ago but didn’t sucks in reality I guess we are the fools for giving them this ego. 2 years to get cut and paste? What the f? No video camera yet? Crap camera? Yes I agree, if u want a decent camera then buy a damn camera but why put a shit one in an iPhone? Why let down something so simple when u have created the best os on a phone? Or put so many original ideas in. Belive it or not some people buy a phone based on the camera quality

    @jb
    To be fair, that was because of the buy one get one free promotion. Curve didn’t “sell” more units. The promotion was buy one and get another blackberry for equal it lesser value. So naturally the second device would have been the curve also. I bet anything that if it was buy one motorola q at a cheap price and get another one free, the q would be ranked up there as selling with the best smart phones.

    Agreed with @JC

    why would u want palm to fail. As much as we love our brand of preferred smart phone it’s bad when one of them dies out. Competition drives innovation. As much as i love apple on top, i think it’s good for them to not get comfortable. As much as i dislike palm i would never want to see them go under, or hear the hard work some innovative engineers put into the pre went to nothing. What some of you taints don’t realize is that when one company fails, we all lose out in some way shape of form. Less competition means we get raped by a product and they become lazy. With Pre closing the gap feature wise on iphone it’ll make apple work and sweat 10x harder for us and with a better price.

    So i hope some of you fools grow up and see the big picture.

    It isn’t fair to compare the iPhone against Blackberries or WinMo devices, because its one device compared to hundreds. Just look at Blackberry; there’s at least 15 different products (I’m talking CDMA vs. GSM, Wifi vs. No Wifi), with at least half a dozen more on the way. How on earth is one model (iPhone 3G) supposed to be compared fairly with that? There’s also the factor that the carriers are pretty much giving them away (in the case of verizon, they actually ARE giving them away), which is the reason why the Curve outsold the iPhone last quarter.

    On your second point; you must not have been paying attention, because A2DP is coming in 3.0.

    @ John

    There have been 4 models of the iPhone to date. not one model. If you want to split hairs of wifi/no wifi, and gsm/cdma. The iPhone has had the 2G and the 3G version in two different data capacities. And I don’t own a iPhone, so personally I don’t care about the 3.0 update, however, it is sad that it has taken them this long to get it in there, when it is a standard protocol in the BT2.0 stack. Carriers have only been recently giving them away, and can you honestly say that Apple and AT&T have been doing any different by trying to offload the stock of the current generation iPhones, in preparation for the refresh.

    Also, I will point out to people that the iPhone is not intuitive, it has a learning curve just like the rest of the phones. Also, one last thing, the iPhone like the rest of Apple’s products are not user friendly, they are idiot proof.

    @SaloMag
    Have you ever used one for more than five minutes? I was able to transition to an iPhone with zero transition. It was literally pick up and go.

    Your point about the versions is moot as well. The iPhone is sold as the same phone with two different storage capacities, and both versions (EDGE and 3G) are not sold alongside each other. There are no other hardware changes though, which is the big difference. RIM currently sells five different hardware variations of the Curve, four versions of the Pearl, two versions of the Pearl Flip, three versions of the 8800, two versions of the Storm, the Bold, and the Curve 8900. Every single one of those has a different hardware set-up that in most cases is carrier-specific, or allows the phones to be sold with different carriers.

    The iPhone has a single hardware configuration that can only be sold on one US carrier, and some overseas carriers. I ask again, how us it fair to compare 19 different hardware configurations with one?

    I hear they are only putting a 3.2 mp camera in the new phone – big deal – N97 has 5mp N86 has 8 mp and there must be several dozen other phones out there with significantly better features that the “new ipohine”. Sorry, i”m not impressed. If you really want to see something cool, check out the new “HTC Pro 2″ now thats wow!

    Megapixels don’t matter on phones like this. The sensors are too small for any increase in megapixels to make a huge difference. Would it be nice if Apple added in a higher-spec camera? Absolutely.

    However, the added cost that higher-spec cameras bring most definitely is NOT worth it.

    We are lucky here in Australia. iPhone is available on 4 carriers and most of them are giving the iPhone away for free on a 24 month contract. Yeah 24 months is a long time but we can also unlock the phone for a nominal fee of $75 and pay out the contract should we se fit. We have “one of the best” 3G networks in the world and 3 of the 4 carriers claim to cover 98-99% of the population. Not bad for a country as big as ours.

    Now if we can just get the products at a reasonable price (in comparison to USA) we would be real happy here. I have to say that the iPhone is definatly around but hasn’t quite taken off over here yet. BB has been moer popular for many years and is slowely being caught up by the iPho0ne 3g. Also, we never got the first gen iPhone and not all the applications are compatible with the Land Down Under.

    I personally am waiting out for the 3rd gen iPhone and will be getting one. I reckon its a pretty nice bit of kit and will do all that i need it for and then some. I wonder if the release date over here will be the same as the USA?

    if this is how the screen quality gonna be look like for the iphone, that really sucks it looks outdated already, I hope its a fake image. go look at smasung HD and some other OLED screens they look amazing compare to the iphone’s, if they are going to use the same screen quality as the previews Gen that will suck :(

    Dylan says:

    No, thats not the case, I don’t know if you know that even if you get a BB or a phone for $0 you are still paying for it, you have to sign a contract with data where the service provider still have to pay the manufacture (rim) for the product which ultimately means you are charged for it every month until your contract is over so no matter if the phone was sold for $300 or $0 but its considered unit sold and you are paying for it every month :)

    Fizzy says:

    Yes you do have to pay a buy out figure that is clearly stated in the contract. Yes it is not cheap. But if you are prepared to pay the quoted price you can have a completely unlocked iPhone free of carrier contracts.
