Xbox 360 sales pass 30 million mark

This past week, Microsoft announced a major milestone for its Xbox 360 console. According to Redmond, the 360 has officially surpassed the 30 million sales mark. For comparison sake, Sony’s PlayStation 3 has sold around 21.3 million units and Nintendo has pushed out about 50.4 million Wii consoles. Both the Wii and PS3 were released in 2006 whereas the Xbox 360 was launched in November of 2005.

Beyond hitting 30.2 million consoles sold, Microsoft has also added approximately 3 million Xbox Live subscriptions since January, rounding out the Live community at around 20 million active members. Other notes:

  • $14.5 billion — The amount of revenue Xbox 360 has generated in the US since its release.
  • $5.9 billion — The amount of revenue Xbox 360 has generated for third-party publishers since its release.
  • 8.3 — The average number of game titles sold per system.

By the comparison Nintendo has BOTH beat almost combined… AWESOME NINTENDO, CRAPPY CONSOLE.

But also by the comparison, it shows the ratio of PS3 being more popular then XBox 360. I tend to agree. HATE XBox, LOVE Sony

I find it interesting that these numbers aren’t put into any context relating to “real world” console usage, that is I would imagine most households don’t just have 1 console but a combination of this current generation’s consoles – In that context Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are all making out pretty good – shows there is room for competition.

In the end, isn’t that what we all want?

(I do have one wish though – they all should have some sort of unified network interconnectivity, that way you can do cross-console mutliplayer games.)

: thats one hell of a good idea. but imo i dont think they will do that to push people to buy there consoles to get certain game play. And xbox live is the best online gameplay i have ever seen.

i wonder what kind of weed the Sony execs were smoking when they thought people were going to pay $600 or whatever the original ridiculous price was?

bunch of people on fatwallet that first year were smoking it as well. they bought up a bunch of PS3’s hoping to resell them for big profits, and most ended up returning it.

all ps3 is good for is blu-ray & free online gameplay thats it. COmpare the 360 & ps3, they are the same. But what makes the 360 so great is better games, a lot of exclusive games, better online game play, alot of users & microsoft wil exploit the 360 to its full potential. so maybe wi-fi on a 360 who knows. all i know i did not regret buying a 360.

Free online, good exclusives, Blu-Ray, Bluetooth, Built-In WiFi,Industry Standard Replaceable hard drive… don’t have to decide between wireless or “wired” versions. HDMI support was always included from release and an almost rock solid build (no red rings). I and every other PS3 owner out there does not regret our decision to go with a PS3 either.

Wow, amazing stat. I grew up playing Nintendo, migrated to Sega in my teen years and can hardly believe the direction the gaming industry is heading. Too bad I have little free time to play around with these amazing systems!

    @ GoatPervertor

i am a proud owner of all 3 consoles. The wii is only used by my daughter. The PS3 is great Blu-ray but the online plan sucks on the PS3 compared to the 360. This is the reason that most multi-platforms sale better on the 360 because of the online experience. I rather pay the $50 a year and have the better service than a free one that pretty much sucks. I have had to send in both for servicing 1 time each.

I am in favor of sony for the third generation in a row. I have gone through 3 xbox 360’s the first two got the red ring of death, and the third started off with the disk trey messing up often to not playing certain 360 games to eventually just shutting down completly. The only good exclusives it had was halo 3, fable2, gears of war 1 and 2, and mass effect. I got my ps3 on launch day and i have not had a single technical problom with it. It has good exclusives like Uncharted, Killzone 2, Resistance 1 and 2, Infamous, Little big planet, and Metal gear solid 4, plus the edition of blu ray movies, ability to search the web, and has all the big multiplat games like assasins creed 1 and 2, oblivion, fallout 3, chronicles of riddick, grand theft auto 4, bioshock 1 and 2 ninja gaiden sigma 1 and 2, far cry 2, and resident evil 5, and final fantasy 13. I have everything i need on ps3 Plus there will be more good exclusives like god of war 3, white knight chronicles, uncharted 2, heavy rain, team ico game, final fantasy versus 13, new twisted metal, and Qauntum theory

BGR, you fail for trolling a topic like this. Trying to get the hit count up? This article doesn’t belong on this blog.
and PS: how many F*ucking times are losers going to try and justify their favourite console. If one makes you happy, then great! STFU about it already!
