But, every phone can sync with iTunes…

Yesterday, news that the Palm Pre was capable of synchronizing content with iTunes hit just about every tech and gadget blog on the planet. In fact, it even reached mainstream media blogs that typically shy away from little tidbits. Really? Fair enough — it’s pretty cool for Pre proponents to know that their future handsets will sync with iTunes out of the box. The level of excitement over this story got us thinking though… If people are this excited that the Pre can sync with iTunes, does that mean they think many current handsets cannot sync with iTunes?
If the answer is yes, that is most definitely not the case. While it is indeed true that many handsets lack the ability to sync with iTunes out of the box, it’s 2009, people — there’s an app for that. There are many, many solutions for syncing your phone with iTunes in fact; from OEM and Apple-sourced solutions to third party plug-ins and utilities. Here at BGR we have two apps in particular that we are fond of, both developed by third-parties: iTunes Agent for Windows PCs and iTuneMyWalkman for Mac.
Without getting too into the particulars, both of these awesome free applications allow you to sync iTunes with any device capable of connecting as a drive. Smartphones, dumb phones, flash drives or even digital cameras if you’re so inclined — if it has a mass storage mode, you can sync it. Several OEM options are a bit cleaner in terms of appearance and dedicated functionality but none are as universal the aforementioned apps. Since we go through phones like they’re candy, we can’t be bothered with 10 different OEM sync solutions. Even if you only get a new phone every year though, why bother with learning new sync software if you change brands? So, if you’ve been looking for a way to sync your phone with iTunes quickly, easily and even automatically, definitely give our recomendations a shot and let us know what you think.

Good call BDot, we should’ve pointed those things out when 3.0 was announced.

We’re so biased though that we would never do something like that. Never. Ever.
Well, I honestly missed that. I’m big enough to admit that I’m wrong.
Good call Zach.
No problem Bdot, thanks.
This post is not about belittling the Pre — sorry if I wasn’t clear enough with my intentions. The level of excitement about the Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes led me to believe there were a lot of people out there thinking this functionality was impossible to achieve with other handsets.
Several people have commented that they in fact didn’t know about software options like these, so I guess I at least helped a few people out there. The majority of the responses were sniveling though, so I guess I was mostly wrong.
Pre fans — despite having NEVER TOUCHED A PRE — are so defensive already. That’s not to say you fall into this category as your comment was probably the most civilized of the lot. It was just a boiling point thing. Sorry man.
@Zach,
The title itself already gives off a feeling that your intent is to belittle the pre, I don’t think you can blame people for thinking that was your intention (whether it was or not, only you know).
If you’re trying to be impartial, you’re gonna have to try a bit harder or else readers will just keep screaming bias. Just sayin’
Of all the authors here, I think Zach and Mike are the most fair as far as content goes. I still would like to know if this allows you puschase content thru it
@Zach
That link/article proves the point of all the prenisses on here. (a pre fanboy) Iphone gets some old features other phones have had for a long time, but the overall tone of your article was positive towards the iphone. Nowhere does that article belittle it…
It was totally opposite towards the pre.
@Paul dude, brother, what the hell are you rambling about? Where in this article does Zach say anything negative about the Pre. Please. Show me a single negative comment about the Pre. Enlighten me.
You see Zach’s comment above about Pre fanboys getting all defensive? Yes.
@John, wording like this:
“Since we go through phones like they’re candy, we can’t be bothered with 10 different OEM sync solutions.”
leads guys who aren’t so techo-smart (or who haven’t researched the Pre much) to believe that somehow the Pre’s sync’ing will be bothersome. I mean, I guess if you consider plugging the pre in and being offered 3 options (sync, charge, or USB mode) somehow comes across as bothersome to BGR’s staff, well, then now I have a better understanding of BGR’s staff.
And one more thing, can anyone, including BGR, list me 10 phones that even have an OEM itunes sync solution?

One up everyone as in who? The carrier stores? What about Best Buy? They have had instant rebates and cheaper phones for the past year and a half with Best Buy Mobile in every store.
Anybody tried nuTsie? I am loving it on my BB. Easy synch to to iTunes. Infinite discovery. Can add stuff to your nuTsie catalog from other users, build playlists, etc.
Just synching doesn’t have that much value. Hello, anyone heard of an mp3 player? Discovery and adding new music take it to the next level.
That’s what I was wondering, if it was just access or could you purchase stuff too?
