Palm Pre First Hands On!
Yes — you’re looking at the first site in the world to have a Palm Pre (or at least be able to post it up). There’s so much to say but that’s going to have to wait for our full review. In the meantime, here’s a couple first impressions of the phone and a few more photos after the break:
The Pre feels really good in your hand in terms of size and shape, but there’s a real plasticky aura about it. Additionally, things aren’t looking good for that QWERTY either. And hey, you know we take them keyboards seriously! When you try and type on the top row of keys, your finger hits the bottom part of the front piece and on top of that, you often hit multiple keys at the same time while typing. It’s actually really frustrating and doesn’t bode well for such a fantastic social communication/personal/business tool.
The screen is really responsive and blends right in with the casing — awesomely executed and the capacitive touch is so damn beautiful. We’d rate it just behind the iPhone but in front of the T-Mobile G1 as far as screens go. Ready for a couple more shots while we stay up all night and write this review? Hell yeah you are!

I swear to god, I had a dream about this phone last night.
It had a clear case so you could see the components and not the black plasticy stuff it has now.
Ugh, how sad, I need this phone released asap.
Wow, I honestly can’t believe I’m logging in again for the 2nd morning and the review isn’t up. Guess BGR is dotting every i and crossing every t on this one.
They are waiting until june 6 when they actually have the phone.

Maybe BGR is doing this on purpose…he has something of value that is worth a lot of money to those hedge funds that will either buy or sell the stock. Maybe they approached him and are paying him as a “consultant” to give them a review of the phone first? If you are a fund and get access to the phone before anyone and find out either it is great, average, or terrible, you can potentially make millions in a short period. Of course they would try and get an edge and there is no reason BG could not do this and it be completely ethical. It is not inside information. Could it be possible someone else is studying the phone for the past 24 hours and will either buy or sell the shares when the market opens and then we will get the review? I don’t know, does BG have any policies regarding this type of thing? He is a businessman. Why not supplement his income with some consulting fees? Just a thought…as a possible explanation for the delay. Only my opinion I have no knowledge at all about it…just was trying to think like everyone else about the delay….

I don’t know..I think he has the photos, but I see that Goldman Sachs is out saying positive things about Palm, the stock is up 1.50 since yesterday and looks like it is going to try and bust over 12 at the opening gate. There is so much $$$ on Wall Street and so much to be made, why wouldn’t a hedge fund hire BG as a consultant and get access to the phone? That is where they make their money by access to public information. If this were an investing website, I would maybe think conflict, but it is not it is a review site. It is the market….when you have information, legally, others don’t you have an edge. Why not act or capitalize on it?

If you have the phone, why not update it with a picture of the phone with the browser on the front page of the BGR website, just to shut these guys up.
Hopefully Palm aren’t giving you crap about this?

Wow. Sounds like you want to talk about sweaty man love more than you want to talk about the Pre. There are sites for that sort of thing as you well know.
Just check your credit card statement. I’m sure there are several on it you are paying for.
Im sure that keypad is much the same as the Centro. It takes a bit, but you get used to it and its as good as any other, since they keys have a kind of gel feel to them, makes it easy to hit the key you are trying to. Not saying you dont miss a letter here and there.

I was a little suspicious when I saw the pictures that it might not be a fully functioning Pre but a dummy phone or some kind of watered down version that now they are stuck explaining. From the pictures it doesnt have the shine on the screen and plastic that I’ve seen in all the vids to date.
BGR – put up a review or admit that you got hoodwinked….
Hey, BG, we’re waiting. I have a feeling Sprint is complaining about you reviewing this phone, aren’t they? Anyway, that’s alright, take your time, but it’d be nice if you’d give us an update. Hope you like the phone. It pwns the iPhone in the long run.

He tried to cut corners someone sent him the pics and said he will get the phone so he try and make it seem like he have it but really he don’t. I wish engadget or some other blog will post a review first to catch him in this lie.
This is ridiculous. I’m having serious doubts that he has a palm pre in his possession or the one he does have is a fake.
BGR has lost credibility. You can’t make a big deal of a having a fantom first review a few days before everyone will have one.
I’ve seen more indepth reviews from people who have seen the Pre for 10 minutes.
The only pic that looks legit is the last with the shiny front. Something is definitely up though with this delay.
I actually got a hands on training yesterday with the pre because I work at Sprint. The software on the pre is definitely impressive. As far as the body of the phone, it definitely has a plastic feel about it. In between the front and back housing there’s this cheap plastic layer (which is what the keyboard sits in) that makes the edge of the phone sharp. It feels good in your hand when it’s closed, but I didn’t really like the feel of it when the keyboard is out. The keyboard is a little hard to get used to, though not as bad as the Centro. Like BGR posted, the top row is especially hard to use. I didn’t have much time to just play around with it because I had to do required training steps, but one thing I hated about the web browser (because I have an iPhone) is the pinch to zoom. This function feels like Palm didn’t put enough effort into it. It feels cheap compared to iPhone pinch to zoom. Also, one last thing I have to say is that the battery life SUCKS! I started my half hour training with 50% battery, and by the time i was finished, it already needed to be plugged in. When charging, the back of the phone gets extremely hot.
