Motorola Alexander back in action, dubbed Somerset

It was about a year ago when we first told you about the Motorola Alexander — a QWERTY slider packing a monster camera, NVIDIA 3D graphics support and plenty more. A couple of months later we dealt the first image of the phone and people’s interest was piqued even further. As 2008 rolled into 2009 however, a DigiTimes report emerged suggesting that the Alexander was scrapped and in reality, our focus had already shifted elsewhere as far as Moto was concerned so not too many tears were shed. But wait! It looks like Alexander might not be down for the count just yet. Now carrying the moniker “Somerset” (Moto has an office in Somerset, NJ), a very familiar face just popped up with a new Bluetooth profile. Little can be gleaned from the filing as the text only mentions the QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5mm stereo jack, MMC support, a camera and of course Bluetooth (with A2DP). The important takeaway here however, is that it looks like Sir Alexander may have survived to make his last stand after all. Anyone still excited to see Alexander make his last stand or has that ship already sailed?

I Hope the ‘inferno’ comes back from the dead too. Moto’s best devices are always rumored to be either canned, or death-bound. While the bad ones, (remeber the bulky-ugly-qwerty ?) is alive and well.

You really think that after the little “best buy Pre stunt” that any handset besides the pre has any chance?
    Long live the “Pre”!
(2 1/2 units per store leaves us only to worship it)

All they know how to do is repackage the RAZR and this doesn’t look like a RAZR! They’ll never go with it.

Motorola’s ship sailed years ago. Just wave goodbye kids. They’re going under. They had the chance and horrible management and more horrible design ideas doomed them.

I think it is really interesting to see HTC (the Snap) and Samsung (the Jack) release new devices with comparable specs to the deceased Napoleon A4500. Moto really missed the boat on lots of stuff in the past year.

Anybody want to bet they miss Christmas again for three years straight?

Why the Moto hate? I’ve been waiting for them to come out with something like this for a while. Actually, more like the g1 v2 if they actually make it. Ive never had anything bad to say about motorola from experience. Best RF, best voice quality(or on par at least with good nokias), and a very solid build. The old razr and q9 took a lot of abuse. Right now, ugly designs and or lack of innovation is killing them, not quality. That aside, I would think many of you would encourage innovation vs wishing them death.

This is an already known phone (QA1). Why is is being presented as news? Any why is it being called Alexander when its the QA1?

That’s the QA1. Probably being called the “somerset” and being released on CDMA.
