The Rogers handset that came locked in a safe…

We’re not going to lie — BGR definitely has its perks. One of them is that our pals from FedEx drop off a lot of packages at our office doors and today was no exception. Although it’s a Saturday, the FedEx truck just pulled up and handed us one heavy ass box (12lbs of heavy). Once we checked the shipping address and saw that it was from Rogers Wireless, we couldn’t help but tear away at the packaging. Inside we found an envelope containing a key, a compass and safe box labeled “Join the Revolution: 02-06-09″. Hit the jump for a sneak peak of what’s inside.

More to come tomorrow.

It didn’t strike me as anything special. Why is so?

    It’s just a g1.

I wouldn’t mind having one but I think there are more interesting cellphones around.

they labeled it day month year because they knew americans would be looking at the picture, americans need to be told what there looking at they cant figure it out for themselves. want proof of this? watch there movies.. example.. shows a gay about to eat a sandwich, the character next to him says “so your eating a sandwich are you?”

Rogers probably sent it in a safe so they can bill you for data use after its opened.

I’m assuming this has Rogers 3g on it right? So it won’t be hard to get it to work on AT&T 3G as its uses the same bands. At least you can own a G phone without using EDGE only.

@ abo: It’s amazing how someone who would want to call Americans “stupid” leaves a post that is FULL of typos and terrible grammar in general. Bravo!

Woah woah whoah. Rogers uses 850/1900 HSDPA bands, yes? So in theory this is capable of ATT 3G unlocked.. Too bad the import premium won’t be worth it. Sigh.

I never liked its design. The speaker part when the keyboard slides out seems intrusive.

Shipping in a lockbox is just a bit over the top, no? I mean, it’s not like it’s a new handset or anything. It’s old news. That would be like AT&T shipping the Blackberry Bold in a lockbox after every other carrier in the world and their mothers had released it. Can you say “let-down”?

Can you check the UMTS and HSPDA frequencies on this thing? Hopefully it will have 850 and 1900 for HSDPA and I can get one and unlock it for ATT 3G use. I know Rogers originally started out with those frequencies but then also purchased the 1700 and 2100 AWS bands that US Tmobile uses. The US G1 uses the latter frequencies but maybe this will be different.

Yes, perhaps Americans are a dumb lot (although the dozen+ errors above would be incredibly hard to beat). But dumb as Americans may be, we remain (by far) the most powerful and influential nation on the planet.

Stupidity aside, worry not my good lad, we’ll show up in Paris (or London, or Rome, or Berlin) to bail your sorry ass out the next time too.
