Sprint: Palm Pre shortages are speculation but demand could exceed supply
As the Palm Pre fiiiiiiiiinally nears launch, there has been plenty of talk with regards to supply and demand lately. Is the Pre going to be as popular as everyone thinks? Did production issues prevent Palm from having enough units ready for launch? Are Palm and Sprint shorting deliveries to help ensure a sellout? Here at BGR we’ve gotten some pretty firm intel regarding Best Buy’s stock of Pre handsets at launch, but what about Sprint’s stock? Can we expect similar shortages? The following is an official statement from Sprint:
At Sprint, we’re excited by the response to the Palm Pre, but what’s been posted is pure speculation. Because of the Pre’s popularity, it’s likely that initially we won’t be able to keep up with the demand for the device. If that happens, we will work diligently to ensure that everyone who wants a Pre can get one as soon as possible.
So, it looks like Sprint and Palm are doing their best to meet projected demand but because the device is anticipated to be so desirable, it’s entirely possible — nay, likely — that demand will exceed supply. In that event however, Sprint will do everything in its power to step things up and get units out to everyone who wants one as soon as possible. There you have it folks, straight from the horse’s mouth.

So, am I the only one that jumps on brand new devices, but if I can’t get it right away, I lose interest pretty fast. If they really are going to hold back devices to boost hype, then count me out. I can shell out $300 bucks for the new iphone if thats the case since it looks like I won’t get my hands on a Pre until the new iphone ‘possibly’ hits the shelves. Way to go, Palm/Sprint. Hope you love being at the bottom forever.
I just got mine too.
Total fingerprint magnet. It’s a little bulky looking too and the call quality is a bit low/muffled. Not sure if it’s Sprint or CDMA in general.
I’ll post more after playing with it a bit.
I don’t think it’s a game changer. Probably those most excited are the Sprint employees who lurk these forums.
I still prefer my iPhone and BlackBerry to this.
What an AWESOME device!!!!!!! Hands down this out performs the iphone in speeds and OS! Sprint is really on the money with this one!!!!

Wow. The Sprint PR police are in full effect.
I don’t blame them though. I know they want to push their product and hype it up beyond status quo.
Just make sure you put out a good product and equip your tech support teams with the knowledge to fix/report issues as they arise otherwise the nerds will speak out furiously.
Sprint has a decent network in some areas, but their support teams (technical, sales and customer) are not great.
They’re doing their best but Palm isn’t getting Sprint the amount of inventory it needs due to manufacturing. Expect shortages for 8-12 weeks until supply catches up with demand.
THAT is straight from the horses mouth and not from the PR mouth.

i got one. it is niiiiice. browser renders page off EVDO like it’s on Wi-Fi. no apps yet. but from reports will be alot @ around 5th.
ha ha no one has one yet thats cute tho how people act like they have one there have not even shiped yet my friend works for sprint and is a manager so nice try guys its soooo funny how they just say wow this is great and dont get into detail o well i feel sad for them lol
