HTC Dream and Magic to run $199.99 on contract from Rogers

Following our scoop yesterday putting Rogers’ outright pricing for the upcoming HTC Dream and Magic at $549.99, we’ve just received word that the price point has already been adjusted — for the worse. While things could certainly change again, our ninja just let us know that the outright price for each handset has been bumped up to $649.99. At the standard $400 off for a 3-year contract subsidization, the Dream and Magic would run $250 but we’re being told Rogers is kicking things up a notch… $199.99 out the door with 3-year shackles. Not bad for the first Android handsets to land north of the border.

Thanks, G!

They should just kill Fido already. I mean there’s nothing left of them anyways. None of Fido’s phones are worth anything.

We need more GSM provider in Canada. Canadian should wake up somehow. Don’t let the sole GSM player fool you around with a “big discount” on the latest headset with signing up crazy 3-year contract. Just get an unlocked one online.

    Let me understand this.

Android was promised to be free, significantly lowering cost of devices. Then why is a phone running a half-baked OS has the same price tag as fully functional iPhones, WinMo and BBries?

Haha, don’t let the new hardware fool you.
Once you go with Rogers, you will almost certainly be with them for life. Judging by a 3 yr contract and wanting to upgrade your phone by renewing those 3 yrs.
Contracts are much better in the States.

be carefull what you wish for. Even if you don’t get the latest Hardware right away, you still get better deals on a 2 year term than we on a 3 year with any provider.

You guys across the pond don`t half get ripped off with cellphone contracts! Fancy having to be tied in for 3 years! The longest here is 2 and that’s frowned upon. Most are 18months.

I’d be mighty ticked if I was HTC (and Google for that matter.) Obviously Robbers is trying to discourage Android sales with this price point. Why get an unproven phone/OS when you can step to a BB or iPhone for the same cost? Especially with the Tour or 32gb iPhone coming pretty soon…

    So $649 U.S. or Canadian?

If I wanted one to use on my ATT 3G network (the Magic)that’s what it would cost me then?

If you live in Canada, Rogers will be the most hated, disgraced word you will ever say. Honestly, $200 and 3 year contract for this Android phone? Unbelievable. First off, the price is pretty high for an Android phone, but the worst part is the 3 year contract.

I can only wish for another GSM carrier to come around and beat Rogers with their scamming tricks.

    Reply to Comments above:

Fido is Rogers’ cheaper end, its their competition to Koodo/Solo (same price point). Most Fido customers nowadays are just looking for a cheap plan and not a fancy phone. If you want the fancy phone you go to the Canadian Big 3.

As for the comment about needing more GSM providers, Bell and Telus are planning to rollout GSM/3G capability around 2010-2011 (now that does not necessarily mean it will be nationwide or a full switch).

Canada is being done over by it’s big telco’s in so many ways.

a 3yr contract + $250? And then no unlimited data and pay for the texts you receive as well as those you send?

Shaw seems the best with good services but that’s only for the people out west.

the best thing that could happen for Canadian consumers is for more FAIR competition in the market.

    That’s not a new idea…

The primary barrier to real competition in the Canadian market is the Canadian ownership requirement for wireless companies.
