Best Buy stores only getting 4 Palm Pres for launch day?

“Whoa, whoa, easy there killer.” That’s probably one of the phrases coming out of your mouth at the moment. One of our most-trusty of ninjas just dropped this bomb in our mailbox — it’s going to be rough out there on June 6th, folks. We’ve been told that there are only roughly 4,250 Palm Pres that Best Buy stores will be receiving for launch day on June 6th. Scott Anderson of Best Buy Mobile told us there were around 1,000 Best Buy locations that would be selling the Pre, so this leaves us with around 4 units per store. For launch. Incredible, isn’t it?

If it makes you feel any better, we’ve heard Palm executives have already started sliting their wrists.

Thanks, fishman!

UPDATE: We just got word from a RadioShack ninja that 721 RadioShack stores will carry the Pre on launch day. Our guy guessed each store would get around 2 units each and the stores themselves are limited to high coastal areas like New York, New Jersey, California, Miami, Texas, etc.

Not. Good.

    this is sad and also true….. the fact that they are going to have such short supply is disappointing… I love Sprint and I want this phone badly but I am afraid this is going to hurt Sprint terribly…. hopefully the shortage is brief….. cross your fingers everyone….

    I love Sprint — never had a problem with them (which means I’ve never once had to scream at them from the top of my lungs over the phone like with other carriers).

    Last time I checked, BGR was not for a specific type of phone, but just a news blog mostly about phones. Best of luck with your Pre… If you can get one. lol

    The rabid Sprint defenders are out on a rampage.

    I haven’t seen so many of them since the days leading up to the Sprint Nextel “merger of equals.” I remember they claimed they would trump all service offerings made by all the other carriers and preached the demise of Verizon, T-Mobile and ATT as we knew it.

    Now they’re back and this time: “ra ra Sprint.”

    Everytime I get the itch to even consider Sprint again all I have to do is take on step into my nearest corporate store and I’m reminded of how ghetto their employees are and how terrible their customer service is. They promise you the world when signing up then could care less about you or your major billing problems after the fact.

    If you don’t have a Sprint corporate store near you, just visit your local KFC, Pioneer Chicken, Welfare Office or DMV….. Their clientele are all similar.

    To update my earlier post, I stopped by the same two NYC Sprint stores on my way home from work. They reaffirmed an expectation of getting 6 and 9 units respectively. They had no other information, except each had started an ‘informal priority list’ with well over two dozen names on each. They will sell their inventory to those on the list as long as the person is there at store opening.

    I’m not worried. At release time I predict Pre units will sell out. But it will die down shortly afterwards, remaining Sprints top phone, but still not being able to touch RIM and Apple.

    And at the end of the day, my iPhone will still have most of the developer support, have all of the advanced applications, and be the phone everyone wants to copy or beat. Pre owners will be stuck with TONS of SIMPLE applications because their very simple development language based on HTML and Javascript will allow web developers to create software rapidly.

    sounds to me that you do not know that the i-phone operating system is based off technology thats 9 yrs old and crackberry is even worse 11 yrs old………now you know why it cannot cut and paste not to forget do more than one thing at once…….i-phone has zero synergy but i guess you can listen to music but if you have an i-pod who cares! apple does make a good i-pod but the phone is pretty damn stupid!

    @ron,
    So, because nobody really cares about Palm anymore, you latch on to any web site that speaks of Palm and call it a Palm board? This is BGR, a general technology board. It is NOT a Palm board. Not an Apple board. Not a RIM board. Not a robot midget board. And NOT a mechanic sex sheep board.

    @Ron,
    Are you serious? Just because they keep MMS and copy and paste out, this makes it an old technology operating system? It is a rock stable Unix based platform with a next generation interface that all of the manufacturers are scrambling to outdo.

    iPhone now a days is more than listening to music. Its applications are far more advanced than anything we get on WinMo or Blackberry. They feel like next generation computer applications rather than simple mobile apps.

    Why do you think there is such a HUGE push for everyone wanting to create iPhone software. Why are all of the major game developers treating this 9 year old platform more like a portable game console rather than a mobile phone? Why is a 9 year old platform looked at as a key player in the medical field, and other industries?

    @ cox>>>>>>>>>> we are talking about palm you have an i-phone so why you here if you are not worried you have to have something better to do like go get an app from that crap app store like baby shaker or something!!!!! The funny thing is the i-phone is not even the best smartphone out before pre but the PRE is sooo much better that everyone will know instantly! there will be 1 clear winner here and it will not be apple! The company that invented the smart phone will re-capture that number 1 phone spot…….I know most of you apple fanboys think apple invented the smart phone= not true it was actually hand spring with former palm employees but palm smartly bought them out!
