iPhone rumor alert: Next-gen specs and launch date

Apple’s WWDC is almost here and as such, it’s time for iPhone rumors and speculation to get hot and heavy. The latest and greatest — July 17 is the rumored launch date and there is a lengthy list of specs to accompany the news. Of course, history shows that when it comes to iPhone rumors, most guesses are a shot in the dark and we can’t speak for the track record of the source (which happens to now be offline). So here we go: Word is the new iPhone will have double the storage capacity of its predecessor at 16GB and 32GB, up from 8GB and 16GB respectively. Battery life will be 1.5 times greater and its processor will be twice as fast as the current model — though. Aesthetically, the back will be a rubberized material and the chrome bezel (you know, the sliver scratch magnet) will disappear. Most of the list of upgrades seem minor, but some are new like the compass we told you about earlier. If this new rumor pans out however, color us unimpressed. Hit the jump for the full rumored spec list.

  • 32GB and 16GB storage
  • $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
  • 3.2-megapixel camera
  • Video-recording and editing capabilities
  • Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
  • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
  • OLED screen
  • 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
  • Double the RAM and processing power
  • Built-in FM transmitter
  • Apple logo on back will glow [please let this be a joke]
  • Rubber-tread backing
  • Sleeker design
  • Built-in compass
  • The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
  • Turn-by-turn directions

3rd times a charm I hope. All I want is more cpu power & more ram. I’m sold the rest is just icing on the cake.
While it would have been nice to have a 1000mhz cpu, 512mb ram up to 64gb storage, 5mp or more camera with AF & Flash. Apple is not going to jump that far at a time.

    @Kent,
iPhone has push email through Exchange, MobileME, or Yahoo. The only difference between iPhone and BlackBerry is that Gmail is not push on the iPhone. But if you use Yahoo, it IS push. Personally, I use MobileMe so I get true push for my email, contacts, and calendar. I even sync my safari bookmarks wirelessly through MobileMe. And with 3.0, we get push sync for notes as well.

since most of the issues will be fixed with the 3.0 software all i really want is a better camera (optical zoom, flash) and even better battery life.

im more excited for the 3.0 software than new hardware to be honest. i know its gonna look basically the same as it does now. unless apple decides to include a slide out qwerty, the iphone’s design has very little room for change. and i highly doubt apple will put out a qwerty keyboard iphone anytime soon.

i gotta say…apple is just not build to make phones. This is some old school sh*t right here. These specs are pretty much a joke. Granted it would be great to have this all in the iphone….but 2 years ago. For today’s standards this is almost an insult. Plus no on-the-fl battery swap. ?????. I get 2 hours out of my Bolds battery cause im constantly on the phone. (that’s why i have six batteries and three external chargers). I couldn’t imagine doing half the things with the iphone, that i do with my Bold. It’s a real shame. They had an amazing product that they did nothing with. That’s some sad sh*t. A tear comes to my eye as i’ve loved apple since ‘92. But its still all good as long as the macbooks keep a-comin’ :)

    Stopwhining says:

what a bunch of whiners. what were you expecting.

The iphone’s processor is rated at 667MHZ. So twice as fast is over 1Ghz. That is impressive if true. The camera at 3.2 is not uncommon. The iphone’s camera takes good pics at 2MP. Oled screen, 32GB isn’t impressive? What phone has built in 32GB? RIM, no, Nokia, No. Built in, not by SD card, and I know the iphone cannot upgrade it’s memory.

Stop whining. The phone might be made out of metal for all we know, the shiny black plastic gone is a good thing.

While people aren’t sounding too impressed with the specs, the combination of the new screen along with the various speed/memory/battery life increases make this a good upgrade that fits the pattern apple tended to take with the ipod where sometimes the main change was just an increase in the hd and making the device slightly smaller.

Haahaaa…Alright, and after this one, which does look good, it’ll be old news come Verizon gets one in 2010. I predict lines will be there, albeit shorter.

P.S. What’s an OLED screen? I was hoping for VGA resolution, or at least higher than the current one.
