iPhone rumor alert: Next-gen specs and launch date

Apple’s WWDC is almost here and as such, it’s time for iPhone rumors and speculation to get hot and heavy. The latest and greatest — July 17 is the rumored launch date and there is a lengthy list of specs to accompany the news. Of course, history shows that when it comes to iPhone rumors, most guesses are a shot in the dark and we can’t speak for the track record of the source (which happens to now be offline). So here we go: Word is the new iPhone will have double the storage capacity of its predecessor at 16GB and 32GB, up from 8GB and 16GB respectively. Battery life will be 1.5 times greater and its processor will be twice as fast as the current model — though. Aesthetically, the back will be a rubberized material and the chrome bezel (you know, the sliver scratch magnet) will disappear. Most of the list of upgrades seem minor, but some are new like the compass we told you about earlier. If this new rumor pans out however, color us unimpressed. Hit the jump for the full rumored spec list.

  • 32GB and 16GB storage
  • $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
  • 3.2-megapixel camera
  • Video-recording and editing capabilities
  • Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
  • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
  • OLED screen
  • 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
  • Double the RAM and processing power
  • Built-in FM transmitter
  • Apple logo on back will glow [please let this be a joke]
  • Rubber-tread backing
  • Sleeker design
  • Built-in compass
  • The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
  • Turn-by-turn directions

eh. nothing truly exciting. Glad to see that peple will finally be able to natively send/receive MMS. Should be good, especially with a 3.2 megapixel camera with no flash.

list the rest of the stuff this new iPhone can do besides glowing logos, not impressive at all. more lame than the iPhone 3G, which added nothing great to it’s predecessor

Wait…with the removal of the metal bezel, this iphone’s housing will now be all plastic. Way to go.

“Twice as fast” sounds very amatuer material. A good source has NUMBERS!
    624 734 512 etc.
Also, “1.5 bettery life” instead of “5,6,8 hours” it does not look real

People are so f’ed up. No one is impressed with the original, or the 3g or the new one that does everything they have been whining for. Jeez, what do you want it to do? Get a Blackberry and be done with it. Unimpressed? Ridiculous. Apple is a great company, makes great overpriced stuff. As does RIM and MS.

this is disappointing, but chances are if you really like the iphone, you already own one and will be fine with the updates that 3.0 bring (mms, copy/paste, video recording, turn by turn gps, stereo bluetooth, of those specs that are known).

Apple could put a turd in a plastic box, state that it was designed in california and all the iSheep would flock to their local apple store to get it! Even if apple doesn’t do anything all that special on this refesh it will still sell. They have the strongest brand loyalty out there. And yes im gonna say it, if it weren’t cool to have apple people would not give a damn. I’m so tired of apple snobs talkin smack.

That’s weak sauce compared to other phones coming to the market in ‘09. BUT, I’m getting it because I just want to build apps for it, that’s all.

People act like the Apple crowd is a bunch of blue bloods. They just like the products. There is no elitist bent nor should there be. Anyone can have an Apple product. Go to Best Buy and open an account. Get a Mac Air and pay $50 a month for 3 years with no interest. Their stuff is better than comparable stuff in some respects. I would rather have an ipod that a Zune. Rather have an iPhone than an HTC WM headache. Rather have a RIM device over both of them. The fanboy shit gets old.

It took Apple 3 tries just to get the basic generic phone capabilities built in ie. the mms and the fm transmiter(if its true). come on apple. and to take away all of what made the 1st gen look classy(the chrome ring and the metal backing.)I’m loosing faith in apple cant wait for palm pre.

32GB was what I was waiting for to buy – I’m happy.

As for the glowing apple on the back – it is no joke. Like every other cell phone, Apple will now have an missed call/message indicator.

    Say Hey says:

Yes, and that is what gets introduced first. Then Steve (or whomever) gives the new pricing, undercutting Palm. Then, just one more thing…an even higher end iPhone. HD display, enough RAM to make multitasking practical, etc and price the same as Palm.

I cannot see all of this waiting until July 17, however.
