Any possibility that globalive is simply t-mobile? (as per 2008 rumour about T-mobile launch in Canada). They are offering the SideKick, they just announced that they will be rolling out Nokia Siemens underlying network – T-Mobile uses Nokia Siemens network, and Bell-Telus has them at the CRTC to disclose foreign ownership… perhaps concern that they are t-mobile? Since CRTC rules don’t allow foreign ownership, this could be T-Mobile’s way of starting up in Canada, only to rename themselves later? I just see a lot of connections… but I haven’t done a lot of research, so I could be way off.

Regardless, I am excited that there may finally be changes to our frustrating mobile arena in Canada.

The only reason i use unlocked handsets is to purchase local sim cards abroad and pay local rates, Locking down sim cards to their devices is douchebag idea. Why are they even selling sim cards seperate of the phone

As an employee of TELUS, I have a hard time believing this. They say it will beat out TELUS’ “dying CDMA” network.

That’s great, however you would think the competition would know TELUS is launching a HSPA network “Q1 2010″. **Google for press release**

Not only that. When we launch we are launching with 96% of the populated area in Canada. Including full Quebec coverage. We are also using HSPA v.7 protocols. They seem to be launching with HSPA v.5.

The telecommunication world is in for a very interesting ride for the next couple years. Buckle up!

HTC Dream/Magic.. how can they launch those if Rogers will start selling them June 2, 2009 and they have an exclusive agreement with HTC. No BB and no USB data sticks.. not very impressive so far.. only good pricing and it is not good enough imho to win clients over.

Very interesting!! I look at these handsets and am not impressed.

The service costs are not really any cheaper then what I have with Bell right now. It’s $40 data…I pay $30. And their ‘unlmited’ has restrictions….nothing new here but another company trying to get a piece of the pie.

The roaming is cheaper, but T-Mobile network has lousy coverage and performance. And I don’t think it will work on AT&T

So basically in many areas your unlimited this and cheaper that means you’re holding onto a paperweight.

I’ll stick with a phone service that is tested and true…and bottom line, will work when are where I need it to.

This quotes are from GlobalWireless7 from Hofo and have not been modified at all, the person who leaked all this information.

Here are some main points they will use to hurt the big 3.

1.) Unlimited Nationwide Calling

2.) No extra fees at all

3.) Good international calling rates

4.) 75% Handset Exclusives

5.) No 36month Contracts

6.) No CDMA

7.) Walkie Talkie on All Phones across the Entire Network

8.) Fastest in Canada

9.) 30GB is our Unlimited, not 5GB or rogers “$30 for 6GB”

They will have their slogan as something very catchy, this is what I thought of and was being considered about a month ago

“The network follows you”

There is a HSPA modem that will be available on launch date. Motorola Manufactures it and it will be ready for the 12Mbps and 14.4Mbps network upgrades in the future.

Also, there will be a “WI-FI where you go” modem as well. Kind of like what Verizon and Sprint will offer in the US, it creates a hotspot from the 3G where multiple users can connect.

Also, this will come about 6 – 8 months after launch, its not decided upon, but a home HSPA modem to connect to your home router / computer for direct competition with TELUS ADSL and Shaw Cable internet.

Globalive plans to compete in more than the wireless industry.

Another note, UMA was looked into, but there isnt any 3G + Wi-Fi UMA devices avialable for uuse with UMTS 1700, plus why have UMA when you can get unlimited minutes?

That reminds me of one of our advertisments.

There have already been 5 Devices that were cut from our lineup very early in the companies choices for hardware. For both marketing reasons and poor sales with US providers and support from the Manufacturer.

MOTO Z10
- T-Mobile was also interested in carrying it but the sales and quality of it were not that great in Europe.

Nokia 6263
- Very low end phone which is what GlobalWireless wants to stay away from, is low end handsets like the competitors offer.

MOTO RAZR² V9t
- No support from Motorola, was requested by T-Mobile and GlobalWireless, but the cost was very high for the phone.

I just noticed that XPERIA was spelled XPERA in the slide, that shows how rushed we were present it.

Some other info that was “incorrect” was that all the devices were offered at a pre-paid price. It should have been No Contract. There will be no Pre-Paid with Global Wireless, thats where YAK comes in.

Another note, the Nokia 6700 Classic is a 10.2Mbps HSPA Device with this pricing

Coverage outside Toronto will suck? Are you kidding?

From the looks of it, the coverage will be pretty solid, other than giant dead zone of Quebec. Outside of Quebec, it’s certainly better than Rogers, and better than Bell or Telus (other than in Alberta). Assuming the coverage map in the slides is accurate.

The best news is for roamers, whether you go with Globalive or not… they are charging 40 cents / MB in the US, which is less than half what Fido is charging … should see some movement there. Now, if we could only see international roaming, particularly EU roaming, along these lines as well. Screw Rogers at $30/MB when the wholesale rate in teh US is moving to 50 cents/MB…

The our harware only requirement probably has to do with their bands, I didn’t see an edge network so only their devices and tmob usa 3g phones will work from what I can see. Which also explains the lack of a bb. Only 3g gsm bb is the bold which runs different bands.

Wow, if this isnt going to disrupt the Big 3’s (Bell, Rogers, Telus) inelastic pricing monopoly, then I dont know what will.

Unlimited data is $40 with GW vs $30 with Bell/Telus, and non-existant with Rogers who charge $30 for 1gb. Theifs.

Also, it appears that there is NO LONG DISTANCE CHARGES. That is huge for Canadians, who can pay 30c a minute wihout a plan!

Is a Canadian carrier following American standards? Please say yes and screw you LD charges.

The only thing is the Big 3 will all be LTE by 2010, and Globalive will only be 3G? I know lower prices are the main selling point here, but if a new network is being built, why not intially invest in LTE instead of forceably upgrading the network in the VERY near future.

Does this mean they will abandon LTE altogether? I hope not. But upgrading 5 years down the road lets say, will cost big bucks. Not a smart move for an org who is just starting up. They should just invest that “new network money” into LTE, a technology which is going to be future-proof for at least 5 years, vs 3G which will be absolete in the Canadian market next year.

Either way, I’m excited for the Canadian wireless oligopoly pricing stricture to come tumbliung down so the average person can afford it.

FREE SMS? FREE included services that should be standard? Hopefully no System Access Fee? About time!

Not sure about the sim card lock for Canadians, but this is FANTASTIC news for TMO USA customers. Another major carrier using the UMTS Band IV/AWS band. New phones to unlock that TMO USA may not get!
