Devs begin testing iPhone push notifications in AP News app
As Apple fans around the world eagerly await WWDC, a new iPhone model and perhaps most importantly iPhone OS 3.0, developers just got the call they’ve been waiting for. During the course of the next seven days, various devs will be testing iPhone OS push notifications in the upcoming version of the AP News app. As you can see in the screen capture above, each app can have Sounds, Alerts and Badge notifications toggled individually. Want an audio alert for new IM messages but only a badge for new @replies in your favorite Twitter app? No problem. We can’t say we’re overly fond of the notifications menu placement within the settings app as opposed to within each individual app, but at least it’s something. Hit the jump for two more screenshots.
Thanks, Clifton!

On the curve!
Boys I have to go to bed. Tommmrrow is another day…BGR will post another leak….
Nite: Joe and Chris.
If apple can come up with an App that takes care of the “dirty touch screen” (”grease collecter”) then I’m thinking about it…….
You too, dave. It Was a pleasure!
@JoeTour,
Well, I have an anti-glare screen protector. They have a texture that does not collect fingerprints. If you go naked, or a crystal screen protector, then yes, you will get screen fingerprints EVERYWHERE.
@David Thande,
@JoeTour,
Good night to both of you as well! I have a blast with the forum conversations we have. And again, if any of you have facebooks or want to add me, the link to my facebook is http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=695997518&ref=profile
Add me too!

Oh yea!
Awesome!!! Can’t wait for 3.0 to get installed on my iPod Touch.
Hopefully iTunes won’t be bad like last time.
This is not a true push model. This is nothing more than polling, then on receiving a new item alerting the user. The BlackBerry actually has mail that is pushed to the device, not idling waiting for the device to poll. Let’s stop using the term ‘push’ for this crap.
@Jeff,
You are the first person I have ever run across that would say that iPhone does not have true push. This new model uses the same push system MobileMe currently uses.
The iPhone pushes information directly to MobileMe for everything. I can send an email to my iPhone and get it a second later. I can go to the MobileMe web page to add a contact, and have that contact get sent to my iPhone instantly. Do you say this polling happens every second?
That was some misunderstanding by some users when there was news MobileMe polled every 15 minutes. But that is only true for the desktop applications syncing with the MobileMe service. THEY sync every 15 minutes, but this has never been the case with iPhone.
Push on my iPhone happens just as quickly as it happens in my BlackBerry. Saying iPhone does not have push just shows how misinformed you are.
@chris
From yesterday, you can save the image to the phone and then use it in mms, facebook, twitter, or whatever else. It’s not copy and paste though.
@Jeff
It is real push AFAIK. It may not be the same as RIM’s push, where they actually push all of the data down, but a push-pull (push a notification, app pulls data rather than just pushing the data) function is still push and it is still better than polling.
@chris, @dave, @joe
Great discussion. You guys kept it civil. Bravo.
Woot!

@Matt,
Yep. That is why they call it “push notification.” As long as users get told when something new happens by sound, see a popup with a summary of new information, and get a badge telling me how many new messages there are, it performs what people need in most background applications. I can’t wait until 3.0 hits.
@Jeff,
Notifications happen instantly and not at interval … so it is push.
