One thing to keep in mind is that Telus is in no way abandoning CDMA. They’re retaining that protocol (like Verizon) for voice, and taking on HSDPA and later LTE for data.

GSM and HSDPA, and CDMA and EVDO are not mutually exclusive to their respective technologies; it would have been entirely possible for Verizon to have had a CDMA/HSDPA hybrid network, but they chose to go with EVDO instead, no doubt due to frequency considerations as well as the speeds available at the time of their roll-out. (which was smart, as HSDPA could not initially offer the same speed as EVDO)

Executives speak a different language than non-executives. Allow me to translate.

Telus said: TELUS announced its commitment to a full national launch of a next generation wireless service by early 2010 based on the latest version of High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology.

Translation: TELUS will launch its network earlier than 2010, but it will be completed nationally by early 2010.

This isn’t news to anyone who has been paying attention.

Nope. Hint is purely CDMA. This is HSDPA we’re talking about. Hint won’t work on HSDPA network.

Pretty sure Bell has already launched their first Next-Gen network handset in the Motorola Hint… By Bell rep. has been boasting on the compatibility with the new network since its launch… its not the best looking handset but its still running all four CDMA Bands (1700(aws)/2100/800/1900)

Isn’t CDMA eventually will be phased out? I prefer CDMA actually have found it to be more reliable then GSM. But in europe not a big deal, no sim.

Makes sense too as Telus seems to love LG handsets. I hope they have the sense to stock some better quality brands too.

I wonder if they will cripple the heck out of their HSDPA / UMTS line too?
