Verizon’s upcoming BlackBerry releases: Tour, Pearl Flip, Atlas Storm 2 info

So check it. We just got a tip from a new ninja but this information looks really credible so we’re running it… Here’s the random bits of info we received:

  • All Verizon BlackBerry handsets launched after the BlackBerry Tour will have Wi-Fi
  • The Storm 2’s screen does not press in like SurePress, rather it operates more like traditional capacitive touch screen panels. We’re not sure if the rumored TruePress is just localized haptic feedback or what, but we can’t imagine RIM abandoning their entire fucking selling point on the Storm.
  • We have no idea what to think of this part, but, our tipster said the BlackBerry Tour would be accompanied by a BlackBerry Atlas with the Atlas having Wi-Fi, not the Tour. Again, don’t flip out, but it’s just what was told to us by this particular tipster.
  • BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 release is “imminent”. We’d say May release, June latest.
  • 8230 specs… EV-DO Rev. 0, 2.0 MP Camera, 3.5 ounces, Flash 128 MB, RAM 64 MB, SD Card – Expandable to 16GB, Usage/Standby – 220 min. / 216 hrs.

There you have it, guys!

I cant get over this whole VZW and WiFi thing, or the GPS thing, if you dont like it, get off it, if you dont use it, shut up, sit down and mind your own damn business. VZW has service here in Michigan that is second to none, ATT and Sprint cant touch it. Thats what I pay for, long as my phone has enough GPS to use some sort of map service, ie BBMaps, I’m set. WiFi would be cool, but I will take my curve on a kick ass network with no dropped calls over a phone with WiFi when I cant get a signal. ATT is riding on Apple, if it weren’t for the iPhone, they would be down a hefty load of customers.

    @Dobbs

I don’t think people are blasting, we have the specs and facts on these devices. People just get upset at verizon bc they leave wifi out by choice. We all know you can fit a wifi radio in all these bb’s. It is pure arrogance to think a network is so good wifi is not needed. When in reality, wifi is needed in many buildings were people work and can’t get a signal.

Try using an app that does streaming radio, like Pandora over 3G and it just doesn’t happen, at least not where I live in NJ. As soon as I’m connected to wi-fi though, it works perfectly. I’m never getting another phone without wi-fi.

Since we are in the ‘domain’ games lately. (Tour+9630 domain, anybody?) Its worth noting that there is no such domain blackberryatlas.com. On another front here is a link on the recent ‘crippling’ debate.

Big red leaves wifi out on their Blackberrys bc these are their only “World Phones” (And one moto slider) Leaving wifi out forces Blackberry users to roam on GSM and incur data roaming charging (Or forced to use Int Data plans) I use a T-Mo Curve when over seas. All calling is done with the radio off, using UMA, all data comes in over wifi, total cost?? ZERO. This is why wifi is so important for bbs, not too mention all most all business travelers over seas use them.

Plus with wi-fi you have the capability to use applications like Skype if it were to come out for the BB.

Why not give the option of using either a click screen or a touch screen? I am pretty sure the current storm is capable of that if RIM would make a major rehaul of the firmware. I am a little disappointed to see the click screen go. It was great for navigating the phone without hitting the wrong app button (common on the iPhone), and also hitting the correct link while web browsing (hitting the wrong link is also common on the iPhone). The click screen was abysmal for text input in my opinion, but some people like it…a lot. So why not make the phone customizable so if people want it all touch sensitive, or all click sensitive, or touch for some things and click for others..then they can do that. That is RIMs best bet because there is NO WAY that they are catching the iPhone with just a plain old copy of it.

Better yet, put a click screen on the bold (AND KEEP THE TRACK BALL). It would be awesome.

RIM needs to focus on customization and options rather than trying to beat the iPhone at the game it is best at…

Pandora works perfect on my “crippled” BB curve.

I think you guys arguing about VZ not having wifi are missing the point. Obviously VZ doesn’t need it, the numbers don’t lie. Without wifi VZ continues to move phones and obtain customers. People who want wifi and all the bells whistles is a small portion of VZ’s business. It’s about big business and as long as bigger business is strong VZ will continue moving forward with business as usual. The ones that push phones to the market early are looking for more business. ATT only got back to the business when Apple approached them after VZ said no to Apples demands. Otherwise Att would still be using their alias name “Cingular”.

Its not about whether u need WiFi or not, the point is when youre payin what you do for these higher end phones, there isnt a bullshit excuse in the world when other carriers include it and others dont.

Sprint always has the edge over Verizon when it come to “Fully Featuring” Phones. I have A Touch Pro On Sprint & A Blackberry for work with Verizon…and its pointless why Verizon does the things they do sumtimes.

I think you are also missing the point. Customer Service is good business, too. And when customers want something that will help them, then VZ should go out of their way to oblige them. If not, people go other places for that service. ATT have crappy range and that’s the only reason why a lot of people won’t go there, but they do have better phones and the iPhone which appeal to a lot of people.

The reason Verizon BBs didn’t have wifi (from what I’ve always understood) is that the wifi chip interferes with the CDMA chip. Most of the current WinMo phones have wifi on them.

I call shenanigans on the non-clicking touch screen. Hell, it won an award last year for most innovative design. If you look at the phots, of the Storm 2, the screen is still seperated from the rest of the phone. If it doesnt move, then they would have designed the phone different. Maybe RIM has come out with something that will totally blow us away again, but I doubt they are going to go backwards and just have local haptics. This screen will click…

@ 3 Phones Jugglin… I still dont get why people out there still thing that Verizon is crippling phones. They did cripple GPS in the past, but no longer. As far as Wifi… there is NO CDMA BLACKBERRY IN THE WORLD WITH WIFI. Not VZWs fault. I have ATT so not a fanboy. Your just not stating correct information. And a quick trip to VZW website shows thier touch pro has wifi and uncrippled GPS….

    @ 3 Phones

Lol, you’ve solidified what I’m saying. My company could careless about wifi and it sounds to me yours doesn’t care either. Which is the point. VZ doesn’t need to offer wifi. Tell your company and the other few million or so to switch to Sprint then maybe VZ might have a reason to offer more features on their phones.
