SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone available in App Store in Wi-Fi only flavor, runs $29.99

Remember that story we broke last month? Unfortunately it looks like our tipster was indeed correct. While SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone is about to become available in the App Store, it only will work over a Wi-Fi connection as opposed to a cellular data connection. It also will run you $29.99. The only good news we could scrounge up is that Sling has allowed/enabled the iPhone client to work on any Slingbox, but they won’t officially support it. All in all, we’re sad to say, we really don’t see this going over well. $30 for an application you can only use over Wi-Fi really doesn’t sound that appetizing. We love you Sling, but this isn’t exactly optimal.

Well, we’re going to hold on to our demo apps that work over 3G — who knew some applications would become collectibles? We didn’t have a chance to put a formal review together even though we’ve been using the application for the last month or so, but quick thoughts? Really solid product that had a ton of potential (and a nice revenue stream for Sling) had it launched with cellular data support. Couple laggy spots, but hey, it’s your TiVo (or whatever crap DVR you use) on your iPhone. Anywhere. AT&T really bent them over with a hot iron stick on this one…

HELLOOOO, stop bitching at ATT to allow for slingbox to play over 3G, what one has to learn from this is that ATT CANNOT handle all that data transfer at once, just cant.

It’s not the fault of the users who are paying AT&T for monthly iPhone access that AT&T’s network is having issues supporting them. AT&T needs to get their shit together. They claim to have the fastest and best network in the US. (And charge their customers accordingly) So, where the hell is it?

This is why Apple went to VZ initially. VZ shut them down because Apple wanted to much. I predict Apple will be giving VZ some iPhones next year. I always felt my iPhone was being crippled by AT&T’s 3G network. From my edge 2G iPhone to my 3G, not much improvement if any at all. Most of the time I had 3G off their 3G signal was very weak. Edge provided a much better signal, less disruption.

AT&T needs wifi! It would get crushed by anything data/3G intensive.

What’s with all the “HA HA my WinMo phone can do that” about?

What are we 6 years old. Nobody gives a fluff about your Sprint, Verizon, or Windows Mobile antiquated phone that tried to copy the iPhone and failed miserably.

I do agree however that Apple is the main reason I’m leaving for a Palm Pre. I’m sick of this dictatorship. I’m tired of AT&T and their BS too. Apple has gotten much too cocky and conceited and I’m glad after ALL the failed attempts that SOMEONE is [Palm Pre] is going to give them some frickin’ competition.

AT&T and Apple are both nervous. So much that they’ve released a document to their customer service reps with how to counter anyone asking about the Palm Pre or comparing it to an iPhone. Just Google it. Or check out….

All we need is one or more phones to knock AT&T and Apple of their throne, only then will the consumer have the power again.

I just heard from Editor at SlingMedia regarding the availability of the IPHONE app. Sling says WIFI was at Apple’s request……
Apple is also pretty slow posting comments today….maybe they don’t want only 1 star reviews!!
