BlackBerry Driftwood/Onyx hitting T-Mobile USA in September
Here’s the deal — we’ve heard now from two independent sources that T-Mobile will be launching a 3G-enabled 8900-style BlackBerry around September. This looks to be the much-rumored BlackBerry Driftwood. One of our sources said it was Onyx, one said Driftwood. We’re going with Driftwood only because of our other intel here (Driftwood was the only device with UMA support) but who knows. Here’s a recap of the specs:
- AWS 1700MHz + 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA
- 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera
- GPS
- Wi-Fi
- QWERTY keyboard
- Optical trackpad
- 480×360 screen
- Carbon fiber-esque back battery cover (the whole back is a carbon fiber pattern apparently)
- Much sexier than the BlackBerry 8900
We don’t have pricing or anything like that, but we couldn’t imagine this going for more than $199 on a 2-year when September rolls around. This will be T-Mobile’s first 3G BlackBerry device and definitely not their last. 8520, your move.
UPDATE: CrackBerry got some more shots of the Onyx and we’ve got some more information… We just heard that the device will launch as part of the 96XX-series. So, we could be looking at the BlackBerry 9600! And, let me reiterate that the device will have an optical trackpad at launch.

i don’t know about this…
Awsome! Can’t wait!!
about damn time i have another upgrade coming up in june i was gonna use on the touch pro 2 but i just might wait on this puppy…
I hope the camera is covered like the curve 8900 so no lint gets in there….it kinda looks like its not covered like the old curve or Bold??
September? Who cares, its May 9th.
Ok. Track ball or pad ? Is it an upgrade on the 83xx series or a new series? And finnaly, does it have any more capebility”s then our beloved ‘Tour’ ?
been saving to get an 8900 or a bold. hopefully by Christmas will be able to get either as a Christmas present to thyself
but, the onyx is here by then… or the driftwood. man! have to ask the boss for that raise i guess.
god damn it – I was about to wait for the gemini but now I might as well wait for the driftwood/whatever its called….this is killin me!
It’s great that TMO USA finally gets their 1st 3B BB, but unfortunately TMO’s 3G service is NOT available in my area.
let’s see the front.
OMG!! When is this coming to Verizon?

Rim has too many devices!
They really need to simplify their product line up, too many different models. Why couldn’t they just use the bold? And have a cdma bold? They’re sure only be 4 blackberries, pearl – storm – bold – curve.
Even that is four times as many as Apple. Anything more than that will start to deminish their brand.
Now THIS is NEWS!!! Nice! Bring on our AWS Blackberry and Don’t forget the UMA. ; D
@ joetour
joecurve, is that you? tell me you didnt change your name cuz of the Tour bro lol
bob
Their marketing department probably went to some cheap university where they taught them that the key to marketing was “shelf space”.
RIM Guy: “you guys need to sell our NEW device.”
Dealer: “but it looks like the other 3 we are already selling”
RIM Guy: “don’t worry, just put it on the shelf, the customers will think it’s new”
Dealer: “OK, but did you fix the browser?”
RIM Guy: “we changed the OS level, so customers will think we fixed the browser, besides, customers don’t know what they really need”
Dealer: “Ah…. cool”
@ bob
“Deminishing their brand” is a title that samsung has. Don’t steal it. The obvious difference between RIM and samsung is that bigsam has one x y feture phone that gets cloned into 3-4 more phones for no apearent reason (look @ their latest lineup). But RIM has four very different models (curve pearl bold storm) and continue to build on these characteristics. A perfect example would be if say, RIM releases 3 kinds under the ’storm’ model.
Richie. How are ya? Long time no see.
Yeah I did change it. I hope verizon will do it too. Soon. (Releasing the tour)
LOl wats up bro, i figured it was you
Hopefully this retains the same slim and small profile that the 8900 does.
So excited to try out a new BlackBerry again.
My contract with Verizon ends in August so this might nudge me off the fence.
T-Mobile works well in my area. My GF loves them and has no issues.
@ richie
These guys @ TMo are good if someone is really in competing with big red its TMo. New small carrier and already having top notch phones
jea bro in the week of 13,15,17 of july, i cant wait… but im still deciding on the tour or the storm 2 tho… im a storm owner and i love the storm despite the crappy OS but its a good phone..
@ joetour
Jea thats true T-mo has better phones than Sprint right now but T-mo is not where near Big Red
I know but I can see them in the long run giving verizon plenty of headaches. Anyway, the storm is a good phone , 1 thing is really big about the storm is the fact despite the beating it got on the review table its still a great seller. In fact it was the 3rd on the list from the best selling smartphones in the past quarter. And believe me, the tour will be great, but will not come close to the storm in terms of browsing and viewing web pages, if only for the big screen alone. Ohh, and when stre*ming video will be @ full capacity on BB’s, then you will have a real choice to make. The physical keyboard VS the ultimate multi-media machine. Let’s see
… if it’ll have Threaded messaging like EVERY OTHER smartphone does.. WinMo does, Android does, iPhone does, Nokias do, Treo does.. why are they LAST?? heediots
Yeps. They have a nicer exterior then the interior. Blackberry that is………….
