AT&T to begin implementing N-SET in an effort to reduce 3G network strain

AT&T continues to boast of “the nation’s fastest 3G network” while many customers in various regions across the country seem to think differently. Dropped calls, outages, network congestion and general reliability issues continue to plague the carrier’s 3G network but today we have some good news for those of you currently with AT&T. According to one of our ninjas, AT&T is set to begin a rolling launch of its Network Settings (N-SET) Solution across all networks in the US. The roll out will begin this month. N-SET will balance traffic between the carrier’s 2G and 3G networks, thus reducing the load borne by its 3G network. Essentially, a customer who primarily uses voice services will connect via 2G even if 3G is supported by his or her handset. If and when said customer begins to actively use data services, the network will bounce him or her over to 3G. BlackBerry Bold and iPhone 3G users will not be affected by the change. Assuming all goes according to plan, N-SET stands to have a pretty immediate impact on network performance by freeing up 3G bandwidth for heavier data users. Whether or not it will be enough to impact urban and populated areas — especially once the new iPhone is released this Summer — remains to be seen.

@Homer,
Ummm … a majority of people out there are tech illiterates. If most people were tech literate, there would not by a hug market of tech support.
Apple is doing so well because they cater to the average consumer. The average consumer does not need to know how something works .. they just need to know it works. Much like I really don’t give a crap how my car works, I just need to know to put gas in it, change the oil, and press the gas pedal to go. Your attitude is more like the mechanic that says … “omg they put too many computers in todays cars because these idiots don’t know how to manage their fuel mixture”
Wouldn’t it be funny? If T-Mobile picked up the i phone?
I believe that by ATT saying it will not affect Bold or iPhone users means that the Bold and iPhone will not revert back be default to 2G, since they are the majority users of 3G where as all other phones on the system will. It makes sense.. Why should a Nokia or Motorola that has 3G need to use the bandwidth of 3G for a phone call. Statistically showing (look at the iPhone for instance) people who use data are more inclined using data-centric phones, not some average flip piece of 3G crap.
Pay to play essentially.
Cingular should have done this years ago when it bought ATT Wireless since they knew divesting their own markets and taking on ATT Wireless horrible GSM network was going to happen. Shame on you ATT for waiting so long.
@ David Thande The most true comment on this whole thread. I personally was much happier under Cingular.
And ATT will get this done while also looking to launch LTE??????? What a train wreck. Anyone looking to sign a contract with ATT soon, think twice. They cannot get one network right !!!
@David Thande,
LOL … I don’t know how that would work. They have a new 3G network that is largely unestablished. If TMobile had the iPhone right now, they would have major congestion issues.
@Waggs,
This is not a rollout of a new network. This is an update that should be completed by the end of the month.
@Homer
No need bro, not everyone goes bat shit crazy about phones etc. Simmer down boy
You got it right the first time Homer. I’m so sick of turning on the TV and seeing iPhone ads and celebrities who have no clue about technology touting their iPhones. Then you walk into an AT&T store, Best Buy, and the mall…all you see are people trying to sell you the stupid iPhone. It’s just a touch screen phone! I had a Windows Mobile phone that did nearly everything the iPhone did back in 2005. It’s disgusting how people will buy anything if you overprice it and put a picture of an Apple on it.
I don’t use a lot of data, but the only reason I stuck with ATT and did not port to VZW or T-Mobile was because the reps convinced me that the 3G network has better voice quality.
I could not stand that garbly cutting in an out voice quality I got over GSM/EDGE.
I don’t want to be subject to the worst voice quality in America just because ATT is too cheap to build a quality network capable of handling traffic.
We pay them so much money (as a collective) and their profits are soaring into the high billions but they try to cut corners everywhere they can and give us just “enough,” to string us along.
“Street Rat Crazy” is more diplomatic…
Rumor: Apple to buy Chrysler?
LoL
I mean, I’m glad they’re trying to be proactive about things, but….
They are basically admitting their network infrastructure cannot handle the heavy loads of 3G traffic for voice and data as it stands.
Like Gloria said (in essence) instead of beefing up their 3G network to handle all the traffic they are being cheap and forcing some users to the older network which does IMHO have terrible voice quality.
Yet……. They continue to brag about how big, bad and fast their 3G data network is. This type of false misleading advertising is only something the mother of all telcos could love.
**waits for all the at&t retail employees to get all defensive and deny any network impairments**
Love U2 MaBell!
Rendall
Hilarious how seriously people take this stuff. It is pretty weak though that AT&T has this issue in the first place and is just fixing it now. What happens when a new iPhone comes in June? Do the problems surface again as any bandwidth they make available now will get eaten up with new iphone users in June.
I agree with David, “Street rat crazy” would have been much nicer.
Mind if I change the Subject folks?
What’s your Location and Carrier?
Los Angeles, Ca T-mobile. Here.
@homer and David;
Ok guys I take it back ” street rat crazy” it is:)
were all glad you left too, more bandwidth for us! Seriously stupid fanboy comments get stupid answers. Only retards are fanboys of carriers, aka big business. Thats as retarded as being a fan of your electric company, freaking pointless!
Now they wanna do sumthing. Im out when the pre drops.

LOL @ going to Sprint. Good luck with that, when you get double billed, sit on hold for CS being transferred around for an hour, or Sprint goes under because they are inept. Big step up from ATT
I’m in NJ/NY area and have no issues what so ever… but hope this helps those who are having issues.
P.S. I have both the iPhone 3g and Bold.
@klmsu19,
I completely agree. The performance of your carrier is dependent upon your location. If T-mobile gives you better service than Sprint in your area, there should be no reason to not go T-mobile if carrier performance is what is important to you. It is stupid to be “fanboys” of a carrier and assume that your good experience applies to the entire nation.
The only reason I prefer AT&T right now is because I love gadgets, and so far they have the best phone phones imho. I would consider switching back to the Verizon for the Tour when that comes out, if I am not sufficiently pleased with the new iPhone coming out. Same goes for T-mobile and the Samsung i7500. Hell, if Sprint got the Samsung Omnia HD, I may try Sprint!
Stfu my whole company switched from verizon to sprint is everyrhing ia excellent my curve works perfectly. Who the fuck call customers service sprint is just fine. Palm came to us and showed us te pre and we immedietly started developing apps for the catalog.

I wish they’d give the user the ability to decide whether or not to pick 2G or 3G. I think a lot of the battery usage is spent roaming in and out of 2G/3G. If I could lock my own phone to one or the other, I’d bet I’d get longer battery life.
