Verizon Wireless to buy a portion of Centennial Comunications from AT&T

A funny thing happened on the way to acquisition. The two largest carriers in the US, Verizon Wireless and AT&T, have commanded and conquered some smaller carriers and are now seemingly sharing the spoils. As already reported, AT&T announced on Friday that it will purchase a substantial portion of Verizon’s divested Alltel assets. On the same day, AT&T also announced that it will be selling certain portions of Centennial communications to Verizon Wireless as AT&T seeks final regulatory approval for the its acquisition of the small, rural carrier. Verizon will pony up $240 million for Centennial assets that include nearly 120,000 current subscribers in five service areas across Louisiana and Mississippi. In the end, we have AT&T buying assets from Verizon and Verizon buying assets from AT&T while T-Mobile and Sprint are nowhere to be found.

    In simple terms: AT&T will acquire licenses, network assets and 1.5 million wireless subscribers in 79 service regions. The subscribers are mostly in rural areas across 18 states.

    @DavidThande,
    LOL TMobile is not even a competitor to AT&T. Why do you think AT&T does not try to be price competitive with TMobile or offer the same features? They compete with Verizon, because those two own the US cellular market. TMobile has always had the best customer service and the lowest prices, but yet can’t touch AT&T and Verizon which most people say have bad customer service and higher prices. TMobile right now cannot touch AT&T.

    You are saying that because you personally, are a fan of TMobile. And there is nothing wrong with that because the best carrier is the one that supports your needs and your market. But the numbers nation wide say otherwise.

      I agree. Ive had them all and they all suck EXCEPT VERIZON. They have the best customer service and the best coverage. ATT has incompetent billing dept. Suncom scams you by not getting the 10 your in list correct and shuts you down 3 times per month then when you cancel they try and stick you with 200.00 contract violation fee. Xcingular was so bad on customer service you had to take a full day off work waiting on hold. Now that Verizon has the unlimited plan with no contract for 50.00 pr month they will clearly dominate.

    @Richie,
    No, that will not happen. The FCC won’t allow it. That is why part of the condition of the Verizon/Alltel merger was to sell portions of Alltel to AT&T so they would not seem a monopoly. The trade commission would stop such purchases. That is the reality.

    I think (kidding btw) is ATT will be broken up by the FCC into state sized baby companies who will buy eachother calling themselves bellmobile. Then Tmobile will buy the newly formed Bell mobile companies and change its own name to ATT. Just like on the Colbert Report.

    I love people talking shit about Sprint and T-Mobile, both of whom have the most spectrum for next generation networks in more markets then ATT and Verizon do. Sure Verizon has 700Mhz, that’s nice, Sprint has 2100/2500 and T-Mobile has 1700/2100…ATT still has to reuse the 850/1900 for next gen…dead.

    Oh and yes Verizon has Voda, T-Mobile has DT, who the hell does ATT have? T-Mobile likely will buy out ATT one day if anything, and Verizon Sprint.

    further proof that laws don’t apply to the carriers in the us: their ability to get approval of acquiring each other’s assets, even though they are first in terms of market share in the gsm and cdma worlds respectively.
