I just got my mini and am getting used to it; the keyboard is a little challenging and since I have an hour commute to work and back each day, I am pressing the limits of the batter. Nevertheless, so far I like it, am impressed with the connectivity, and am glad I got it. Question: is there a way to port my Thinkpad through the mini to use the broadband connection and have access to size, speed and and applications that are on my Thinkpad?

No, the HP netbook is not a phone, unless you count Skype. It does have a built-in camera and mike. But Skype w/live video when you are tethered sounds like a lot of bytes transferred. You could reach the limit pretty fast and start the meter running on excess bytes.

Using a Wi-Fi hot spot or your own Internet wireless connection when you are at home would be the way to go.

This might be a question for the Verizon rep. I found I could use free Wi-Fi at all the locations that offered it before I initiated my mobile broadband account. I went ahead with the contract because I want to be accessible online anywhere I need it, not just sitting in a parking lot etc.

i think that getting the netbook is going to be awesome, i just order one and it will be here monday..my curent provider charges $70.00 a month, you have to have a phone line, charge you an arm and a leg for wireless..
so by far, i think that this is a great deal

Robin, Thank you for your intelligent and speedy reply. I do plan to go to VZ store and check out the mini. I thought that if you had it you might assess the speed and capability. My netbook is hearty, but I agreed that I’d rather spend $199 and then pay for data than spend $1000 and get nothing extra. A pay over time that gets me a new ‘book every 2 years plus data access is smart as long as I can pick up a connection. I spent most my time at home, and there are unshielded networks I see all the time around here. I stealth my port to keep anyone from accessing, just as I would not want to access theirs. My concern is that I am planning on leaving, and hoped to have net access anywhere I go, hopefully without having to pay a 2nd time for home access. In a larger town, that could work if VZ allows the broadcast. So that leaves the phone. After a year of researching and reading the various boards, I am left with the impression that VZ has the 75% customer base and coverage, gets fewer updated phones, & the BB tour is probably as close as I am going to get to a computer-like phone. I believe that VZ does not allow phone as modem, or at least the monthly cost for data and phone is $120. Steeep. I hoped I could hook up the BB to the netbook and use it as a modem if necessary while I am getting settled and perhaps permanently. My concerns have focused on the size and clarity of the screen, as my cold hands don’t generate enough heat for most touch phones. They really have to be capacitive to feel the finger press. The voyager has a large screen, but when trying to view charts I found them too small to see, so I am hoping that the better resolution on the new phones change that. Based upon how creatively you’ve cobbled together a solution, it sounds like if I get a VZ netbook after they demonstrate it has the juice, then my biggest issue will be making sure that I can pick up signal anywhere, including my house without having to have an ISP here. That would be perfect. Combine that with a new BB with keys and a tight screen, and all my tools are assembled. I will ask about the phone as modem and the aircard capacity when I get there later this week. If you get your system assembled, let me know if it works as you hoped. I have a USB drive, could get a usb dvd drive, have the s/w, so really might be able to pull this off far more cheaply than sinking the funds into a netbook that will be outdated in a year or 2 anyway. I went for the best rated Intel dual core with Nvidia for the speed, 64 bit ability to see the 4 G ram, and the cooler chip set rather than the intel – it runs so hot you’ll burn out components before their time. My Dell lost a lot of components before they wouldn’t honor the warranty – lost a customer for life, I have 1 year left they won’t honor, but that is for a different forum.

Again, thanks for the assistance and reply. If you think of another angle or something else we haven’t covered, let me know. I think you really spent the effort to get this worked out and saved me some $$$ and gave me ideas on how to do it myself more cheaply yet get want I need. BTW, HP makes good netbooks, as does ASUS. I did plenty of research before committing to one. My first was a dud, and this is only 4# but has the guts of a much larger laptop. So I’m not worried about the mini being HP. Now if it were Dell……

The Netbook isn’t to take the place of your cell other than to get you a larger screen (vs your cell) to connect and read everything on the Net. It’s just to make it easier to get hooked to the Internet rather than using VCast on your cell or when you can’t take your larger laptop with you. It’s no different than a regular laptop in that regard except it’s a 10″ mini yet it doesn’t have a DVD player like a “regular” laptop. BUT, what I love about this (and it’s easier to afford than a larger laptop unit right now) from sales is you can get a flash drive and insert it into the USB port and have all your other larger programs right there. Also, you can get a flash DVD and plug that in and you’re set. In fact, it’s a mini HP laptop bundled with a 3G network package. Since you could use it with any free WiFi at a coffee shop and save your mobile web access usage.

I “killed” my Dell too and so this is a replacement for that. I know they say you’ll be paying a lot more over time for using this but the way I look at it, if my regular laptop died in a couple years I’d have to shell out $500+ for a new one. With this, I get a new one within a year if Verizon changes the model or a new in 2 years at the end of my contract. So I think of it like a car lease, I get something new-every-two. You have to pay for access anyway to the broadband so…I think it’s going to be perfect for me.

I am online all the time perusing news sites, instant messenger services and on my cell using Mobile Web for banking. I wonder about dropping the VCast on my cell because I have it to use with my cellphone to access the Net and there might be times I can’t use the Netbook. Ideally though, for me, I can slip it into a protective sleeve and carry it in a larger purse. That VCast mobile web access fee I pay with Verizon for access via my cellphone would be $15 I could use towards my $59.99 broadband fee on the Netbook.

There are demo models in the Verizon stores now. You should go in and let them demo you the speed for your graphics and games. I’ve not had one in my hands yet to know if it’s capable. It does have 8GB of HD and 1MB of RAM so it has some space on it for playing. I ordered mine with the wireless mouse and car charger. I had it put on my Verizon bill so I don’t have to pay for it for a month.

Oh, while I’m at home, I have wireless already too through Time Warner Cable. I’m going to link off that for my Netbook and save on my Verizon mobile broadband just as if I were at Starbucks.

My daughter has the Voyager and I have the EnV. We both love our phones. I want to get a Blackberry so I skipped the Voyager and I’ll do that this December when my new choice comes up. Good luck with your Netbook if you get one and try to stop by a Verizon store so you can see one up close.

I have been reading about the 1125 and I need both a computer and cell. Have choice of anything except ATT. Bought an HP netbook a week ago, have another week before I can’t return. 1st was a dud, this I can’t see the keys with the silkcreening (it is the HPdv3510nr). For the $900 it cost (my Dell died, had to have immediate replacement), it was way too $$$$ but the best rated – Intel processor, 4GB ram and Nvidia card (hate those hot bottoms on these devices). I need speed for stock trading and graphics for same. So, do you think this new netbook has the OOMPH to draw charts and level II screens? Also, I am not a VZ customer, and confused about dropping VCast. Does that mean you’ll just browse/twitter etc for your news? I watch 2 CNBC shows real time for ideas and really need to get them, so I am switching from Sprint since they don’t offer CNBC. I’ve had enough s/w issues with this netbook that I am already fed up at working around, and the GEEK Squad at Best Buy had no clue when it came to the s/w problems. This one has taken me a few hours to figure out how to get livemail without having to run windows live, for example. Lots of crap ware. Thus, if I get the new mini with an air card, and I get a new bluetooth phone, do I deduct that I must surf to the sites, that I can use the phone as a modem if no wifi is available, and the 1125 is speedy enough when cleaned of the freeware to trade stocks and also connected to the phone without a tether or all those extra data plan or other fees VZ is famous for? Hope this makes sense to everyone. I hate paying $900 for a netbook that is okay and outdated in 2 years, still paying for wireless access anyway at home, and I have yet to get a phone (thinking Tour) so have options but want to save $$$. I really hoped for a phone that would be that “computer in the hand”, but I haven’t seen/heard of that just yet. Was hoping for the new BB to perform much, and heard the Voyager is re-into’d as enV2 with much of features in a week or so. If I am way off or anyone has better ideas, love to hear educated responses. Please be kind, I am working to learn here, not flame or inflame. Thank you.

Great news! It’s an HP sure but it’s also USB compatible so you can put your Excel/Word-etc programs on your flash and use your Netbook like the computer it is. Also, I can take the VCast Mobile off my cell, save $15 a month and use it for the monthy broadband fee. Too, WiFi IS most everywhere and you can use “their” service and save on yours. I love this! Plus, renew every year if they get a new version or every 2-yrs in your contract. Sweet!

The laptop is subsidized with a two-year contract AS STATED IN THIS VERY POST. Second, $199 for that laptop would be absurd for anyone selling it in today’s market.

I’m using mine right now while enjoying a little vaca in Ft Lauderdale. Can’t beat it’s combination of portability and full XP usefulness. Beats the hell out of using a smartphone. When I don’t have a wi-fi signal I tether it to my 3g phone and the speed difference is hardly noticeable. I can even use Skype or AIM for video calls when tethered. ATT wanted me to pay $20 more per month for unlimited data when I wanted to ugrade to a PDA phone. Since I already have unlimited data, I told them to keep their PDA. If I want one bad enough, I’ll buy an unlocked phone. Adding up the extra cost over a new, two year contract is absurd. I don’t use enough data to justify it. The Skyping was just for giggles and I probably won’t use it again and I almost never need to tether. $20 more per month just to check my e-mail on the road? This is a very handy little netbook and the key board is almost full size. I did expect a faster boot time from a flash drive…oh well.

My Android WiFi tether regularly gives me 3Mbs in a wireless cable free tether to my Netbook.

Since I wouldn’t want to need to hold a netbook to my ear everytime I want to talk on the phone, I would still be keeping a phone with me anyways, so I don’t see it being much of an extra burden to push 2 buttons on my phone to give my Netbook a connection.

However… If I could use a blu-tooth headset to interface with this Verizion netbook, with voice dialing, then I could see just keeping this netbook near me to fuction as my phone and portable WiFi connection. That might make it nice to eliminate needing to carry a phone entirely, but it could be akward for many situations where you don’t want to lug around a netbook just to have a phone connection.

If the netbook used Android, I would be on it in 2 seconds No matter what sort of evil soul selling contracts Verizon required.

Verizon does have the best broadband speeds, but I believe there are better powered net books on the market if I am not mistaken.

The HP is a nice looking unit though.
