Verizon HP Mini 1151NR netbook set to launch on May 17th

We’ve just received firm confirmation that Verizon Wireless’ first netbook offering  — the HP Mini 1151NR — is currently starting to touch down in stores across the country. We first scooped it in February and then confirmed the model in March so the only thing left to tell you, of course, is the launch date. Mark it down in your calendars folks: May 17th via all channels; the same day Verizon’s MiFi personal hotspot drops. Pricing isn’t yet appearing in Big Red’s system but we’re hearing it will be $199 with a 2-year contract after MIR. Of course some people will jump right into complaining and adding up monthly fees ($40 or $60/month), saying that this isn’t a good deal. It’s true — you’ll end up spending between $960 and $1,440 over your 2-year contract period for data access. To those people, we suggest buying a comparable netbook with an integrated data card ($450ish) or a comparable data-less netbook ($300ish) and a USB modem/data card off contract ($250ish). Then pay, yeah, $40 or $60 every month for data anyway.

Thanks, krazyVZW!

hm… if 3g were in more places and i could take this baby overseas and use the 3g there, i would be more likely to purchase this little bad boy.

but then again, i think of the price and realize that bgr is right yet again.

Apparently even with the break in the news on At&t and Verizon you folks are still participating. So shut up and don’t buy it! I personally can’t wait to see it for myself.

    Great Reporting Zach!

Looks interesting, for $299.99 and two months of $59.99 broadband access, this will pay off in the long run. lol

Verizon does have the best broadband speeds, but I believe there are better powered net books on the market if I am not mistaken.

The HP is a nice looking unit though.

My Android WiFi tether regularly gives me 3Mbs in a wireless cable free tether to my Netbook.

Since I wouldn’t want to need to hold a netbook to my ear everytime I want to talk on the phone, I would still be keeping a phone with me anyways, so I don’t see it being much of an extra burden to push 2 buttons on my phone to give my Netbook a connection.

However… If I could use a blu-tooth headset to interface with this Verizion netbook, with voice dialing, then I could see just keeping this netbook near me to fuction as my phone and portable WiFi connection. That might make it nice to eliminate needing to carry a phone entirely, but it could be akward for many situations where you don’t want to lug around a netbook just to have a phone connection.

If the netbook used Android, I would be on it in 2 seconds :) No matter what sort of evil soul selling contracts Verizon required.

I think its good repoerting too, there is more going on with att and vzw so BGR can’t control that, very demanding people here. Although one thing that annoys me is that half of every article is “we first covered it back in this date” “we did this, that” blah blah. Yes we get it you guys have more “ninja’s” hence you guys report it first, we read the site everyday.

I’m using mine right now while enjoying a little vaca in Ft Lauderdale. Can’t beat it’s combination of portability and full XP usefulness. Beats the hell out of using a smartphone. When I don’t have a wi-fi signal I tether it to my 3g phone and the speed difference is hardly noticeable. I can even use Skype or AIM for video calls when tethered. ATT wanted me to pay $20 more per month for unlimited data when I wanted to ugrade to a PDA phone. Since I already have unlimited data, I told them to keep their PDA. If I want one bad enough, I’ll buy an unlocked phone. Adding up the extra cost over a new, two year contract is absurd. I don’t use enough data to justify it. The Skyping was just for giggles and I probably won’t use it again and I almost never need to tether. $20 more per month just to check my e-mail on the road? This is a very handy little netbook and the key board is almost full size. I did expect a faster boot time from a flash drive…oh well.

@Fonzy Not only are you retarded for your question, but you can’t read either.

The laptop is subsidized with a two-year contract AS STATED IN THIS VERY POST. Second, $199 for that laptop would be absurd for anyone selling it in today’s market.

Though I hope you ask someone at Verizon about that. So that when they tell you no and you still buy one, they add a retard tax to your bill.

Ok well I upgraded my unlimited aircard to the netbook and it DIDNT make me change my plan! And we got the book for 149.99 as we were eligible to upgrade. Only downfall thus far is some of the preloaded crapo you have to remove.
