T-Mobile’s Walmart roadmap: T-Mobile G1 v2

So check this, our brothers and sisters at TmoToday broke news of this second iteration of the T-Mobile G1 aka Bigfoot (aka Morrison according to the Walmart roadmap). But we’ve uncovered something very sexy — an awesome image! Full slide-out HTC-style QWERTY? Check. Look for this to drop in October for $148 with a 2-year agreement at Walmart (so, $149.99 on T-Mobile then?). If the hit or miss hardware design of the G1 wasn’t your thing and the Magic’s lack of QWERTY has you disappointed, the G1 v2 is where it’s at.

@semicoln Im 100% with you. WTF is up with Android and T-Mobile?! Isnt it an open-source OS, why isnt ATT, Verzion and Sprint all selling an Android phone by now?!

Is this from HTC b/c I can’t find any info on who’s manufacturing this phone. It reminds me a lot of the Moto Evoke which is why I thought it was a Moto. So what is it if anyone knows?

This Phone looks AWESOME and by the way T-Mobile’s 3G is Consistently FASTER than ATT and Verizon’s and I know this from EXPERIENCE not just mere Bias like some posters on here.

Plus its Proven online including CNET who have Proved T-Mobile’s 3G is Faster than ATT’s, read up on it sometime or try your friends’ Tmob 3G THEN post.

    Thought you couldn’t HA!

Check your Sorry ill-Informed Azz at the Door, thanks.

T-Mobiles 3G service isn’t even up half of the time in the Bronx. Totally unacceptable. Definitely the worst mobile broadband that I have used.

there’s actually a lot of about android that makes google seem less than the sort of company they portray themselves to be (the nice, open source supporting type).

while anybody can theoretically download the android source code and try to make a phone, google actually makes it a little more difficult than it seems (using subtle methods). thats why:

    a) nobody besides htc has a phone out yet.
    b) all android phones look the same (landscape slideout keyboard, etc).
    c) KIRF phones dont use android.
    d) they all use a qualcomm chipset for now (hence no cdma yet).

this device looks increadible! i hope this is not an htc and how could it be…. from my experience htc is hot garbage! i hope ths is a google phone from a company that knows how to make phones.

@therealninja: I know at least Lenovo’s OPhone is a non-HTC Android phone… not available in the US.

Also, aren’t most CDMA phones based on a Qualcomm chipset? My Blackberry says “Qualcomm 3G CDMA” on the back, so you saying thats why there’s no CDMA makes no sense.

In case you people don’t remember AT&T and Verizon have both said no to Android. The only ones who have committed are of course T-Mobile and Sprint (reluctantly). Maybe you AT&T fanboys and Verizon fanboys should complain to corporate….oh wait, I forgot that corporate at those two companies don’t really give a sh!t about its customers…

    Counsel says:

The phones with slide-out keyboards only “make” you type with two hands when the keyboard is out… You can always close the phone and type with one hand-if it is symbian, you can set the phone to use a qwerty or t9…

Think customization rather “having” to do it any one way-supporting those that give you that freedom is nice too. :)

@semicoln: i guess i didnt connect the dots for readers with my cdma comment. qualcomm makes non-cdma chipsets too, and the cdma chipsets arent supported by android for now. only the msm7k family.

    for more info, read http://openhandsetmagazine.com/2007/11/android-phones-and-the-msm-chipsets-solution/

its a little old but its still true, afaik.

Alright I am going to give you some definitive answers and clarifications to previous incorrect postings. #1) T-Mobile’s is consistantly and reliably top notch where they offer 3G service. PERIOD, END OF STORY. I’ve had my G1 since launch, always get between 900 Kbps – 1.1 Mbps and have never had any problems. That isn’t a guess, it isn’t a speculation, its a fact. 3G coverage in the area I live doesn’t cover the south suburbs, but that will be added this year. #2) This is not an HTC device, it will be launching, and yes the Magic is also still launching.

With the 1.5/Cupcake update there’s a really functional onscreen keyboard that I use on my G1 to type shorter txt replies and twitter updates…it’s nice to have the option not to need two hands.

I have T-Mo 3G in San Francisco. It has been fantastic. Anywhere in the City I get 3G and it’s fast.

But the 3G service, like any, is spotty when indoors. I live on Nob Hill and in my condo there are parts of the building where I can’t get 3G. I walk into another part and 3G kicks in.

My problem is the buildings solid construction plus the tall buildings around me have towers for various companies, including the carriers.

So I get lots of interference. I swear there’s microwaves frying my brain. At least that’s the excuse for my warped behavior and I’m sticking with it.

Nothing my WWII steel army helmet can’t protect, but I can’t wear it 24/7, when I sleep, for example. But the shower is not an issue.

    I digress, forgive me.

    @therealninja: Thanks for the clarification

@people getting defensive about T-Mobile: I’m sure T-mobile 3G is great, there aren’t many people using it. I have no beef with T-Mobile except they have no coverage where I need it, much less 3G.

@Don Louie: Well not really. Anywhere you’ve got Sprint you’ve probably got VZW.

I’m pretty damn impressed with T-mobile 3G just because the speed at which they are doing it. They’ve been adding new markets and phones pretty fast considering they only got 3G a year or 2 ago. The fact that they can even remotely compete on that front is pretty impressive in my mind.

    Scott M says:

You need to also learn that 3G speeds differ between markets. like in Cincinnati 3G could be twice as fast than 3G in New York (not saying it is but you get the point). Also AT&T and Verizon have so many more customers on there 3G networks in most markets compared to T-Mo so there is less bandwidth to go around per tower. So what i am saying is if T-mo supplied the network for nearly as many 3G customers as the other two, their 3G network would be at a craw.

Look like all of these phone can work on T-Mobile’s network
