Rogers announces HTC Dream (G1) and Magic coming in June
It’s Android time, Canadians. Mark your calendars for June 2nd as Rogers Wireless has just announced the exclusive arrival of both the HTC Dream (aka G1) and HTC Magic (aka QWERTY-less G1) next month. Details are a bit scarce for the moment but Rogers’ release promises that clarification is forthcoming. For the time being, it’s safe to say that at least the HTC Dream will become available on June 2nd. The HTC Magic will arrive in June as well though it is unclear if the actual launch date will be June 2nd or some time later in the month. TORONTO, May 7 /CNW/ – Rogers Wireless today announced the exclusive Canadian launch in June 2009 of the HTC Dream(TM) and HTC Magic(TM) smartphones, the first cellphones in Canada powered by the Android platform, allowing for fast and easy access to a wide range of Google(TM) mobile services, including Google Search(TM), Google Maps(TM), Gmail(TM) and more.

They probably forgot that in Canada, we have only one GSM provider.
Is this a G1.1? Has anyone else noticed that in the ad, the hard buttons are slightly different? The ear speaker also appears larger. Could just be a mockup I guess, or could be the exact same internals with a slight facelift refresh for you Canadian folk who’ve had to wait.

Isn’t Rogers the company that over charges on everything? Don’t they make you sign 3 year contracts? If so….. I feel bad for you Canadians.
Haha, we get the short of the stick again. We receive all the nice devices after they been in the market for a year like sony ecrisson x1, iphone, now g1. Rogers should 1st fix their plans mainly the data rates. Than reel in all those sweet devices. My opinion. Any one jumping to grab this on rogers network grab a text plan because they charge for incoming starting july 7.
So f’n awesome… this means there’s an 850/1900 HSDPA Dream out there in the wild somewhere. As an earlier poster mentioned, this is AT&T, so those of us stuck with this provider FINALLY have hope of an android device on this lame network.
As an AT&T user this is totally awesome – there are now 3 great possible outcomes, from best to worst:
1) AT&T picks this thing up
2) Google will offer this thing unlocked directly via their dev phone program (ala the current G1)
3) Failing 1) or 2), we can import unlocked used versions from Rogers users
I really, really hope we see 1), but I’m extremely doubtful on that one. 2) to me seems really likely, and even 3) isn’t bad as a worst case scenario.
HTC, I’ve been wanting to buy this device for so long – please give me the opportunity!
This would have been fucking awesome if it had come months ago. Now there are much better Android handsets due out within a few months, I can’t see myself dropping $600+ on one of these things (or signing a ridiculous 3 year contract.)
But why does it have to be so ugly…. I am hoping that Samsung can bring some style to Android phones because the OS is not all that bad.
Actually rogers got the iphone 3g at the same time as every other provider and the g1 has been out for a while but the magic isnt released yet so rogers is not so bad when it comes to releasing new phones

you probably forgot that that quote was from the senior vice president and cheif marketing officer of Rogers… he’s going to say that whether we have 1 GSM carrier or 1 million GSM carriers…
