Magnetometer in next iPhone confirmed?

We just got a couple images from one of our Apple ninjas and it appears to show a compass option in one of the debugging menus. Our source says this is obviously for a built-in magnetometer in the upcoming iPhone hardware revision and with what’s already been reported, we’d have to agree. One more image after the break!

    Does it come with the string on its applicator? Or is just used as a regular Maxi-Pad?

    @All of the above

    I’ve had a couple drinks, so sorry if I’m missing something obvious, but is it bad that I have no idea what the hell is going on?

    You don’t need a magnetometer for compass info if you already have a gps receiver…

    A feature like this turns me away from the iphone. Why would I want multitasking and gps when I can have a compass? Oh yeah…cuz its the 21st century. Stop wasting our time with your little kid toys Apple or else you can kiss goodbye to your customers.

    I don’t give a toss about compasses until they give us turn by turn driving directions (or let someone else give us a app for it)!

    jonnybruha says:

    Magnetometers/digital compasses are being included on next-gen devices because it significantly helps finding and maintaining your direction while navigating. From someone who has used their phone as a GPS for several years now, I’ll be the first to say that GPS alone is barely enough for proper navigation.

    As I said on Engadget, if the rumors pan out and we see a 3rd gen iPhone with 5mp cam, magnetometer, OLED screen, and *fingers crossed* hardware keyboard, I really can’t think of a reason someone would buy an N97.
