Internal Palm memo may reveal Pre launch timing

We’re prefacing this by saying we’re definitely not 100%, but it looks like Palm could be gearing up for a round of meetings that will lead up to the day we’ve all been waiting for — Palm Pre launch day. We just received what an anonymous tipster claims to be an internal Palm memo regarding some meetings that will take place in early June. According to the document, the meetings will conclude on Friday June 5th with what is labeled “LAUNCH LUNCH!”

Now, it’s likely a safe assumption that Palm isn’t going to leave much time for info to leak out between these supposed meetings and launch time. As such, it looks like the day of reckoning is either going to be Friday June 5th, Saturday June 6th or Sunday June 7th — and yes, Sunday is historically Sprint’s launch day but this is the Pre we’re talking about so switching things up isn’t out of the question. Giving some additional credence to the scenario by the way, is the fact that Best Buy is slated to begin its trial launch of the Pre on June 7th, meaning Sprint will most definitely launch the handset before or on that date. Getting excited yet? Hit the jump for the full memo.

    When I first saw the Pre I wanted one but now I think that Pre has gone a tease to far so I will just wait for the new iphone which will likely come out just after the Pre. I think that pre shot itself in the foot keeping us waiting so long, but time will tell.

    …Is it just me, or could this be some good propaganda? Think about it, all over the web people are itching for a release date. Can we be certain that this did in fact leak from palm, and not someone just trying to push buttons?

    I’ve been waiting for the palm pre almost all year. I’m finding the the closer it gets to release and the more I learn and hear about it, the more I don’t want it and feel I wasted all this time not having an iphone.

    It also feels like this might be sprints last big punch to get back in the wireless game. The palm pre could be the last of the great (only?) sprint phones while other networks like verizon/att/tmobile have much more promising phones and probably much better phones in the works.

    It’s so close now that I’ll wait till its released and reviewed before I hop on board. I just hope its a great phone, but my doubts are growing.

    Wow, what timing. The Pre launch will be overshadowed the following day (june 8th) by the NEW iPhone announcement.

    @Don Louie,
    If I knew you personally I would bet you money that Pre comes nowhere close to iPhone or BlackBerry 8900 numbers come release time.

    @Don Louie,
    “Palm will produce whatever cdma number Sprint orders”

    Ummmm no. Palm can only produce devices in numbers their production capacity allows. I seriously doubt Palm has the manufacturing contracts that RIM and Apple has because their other devices were low volume.

    How are they going to produce product past their capability? By pulling all of the oompa loompas off the chocolate river so they can work in a plant making extra devices with Snickers as payment?

    @Scott,
    I have no doubt the Pre will be a good phone. I have doubts that it will be as popular as people are saying it will. This is a device that can compete squarely with Google Android devices. Not a device that can compete with newer Blackberry devices or the iPhone.

    What is a discussion of employee benefits doing in a 3 day meeting about the Pre? Misspelling aside it seems out of place and makes me question the information.

    I believe that June 7th is the release date for the Pre, but this document doesn’t sway my opinion either way. This is fake. What large company puts out a memo with a typo in it?

    Christopher Cox says:

    @Don Louie,
    There is no indication that they anticipate a huge release. When iPhone was released stores were prepared before hand for the anticipated flood of sales. This was same with Bold and for Storm. With the Palm Pre, mum is the word. I seriously doubt they went into production of a million units come release time, and even if they did under-estimate, it will take a few months to obtain more capacity to start producing the numbers.

    Joseph says:

    The typo is possibly a canary trap. They probably sent a similar release to a bunch of people they suspected of leaking with different typos so they could pin down who is leaking.

    @tont,
    Some people have known there was going to be a brand new OS and a supposed game changing device since Palm purchased Access for their Access Linux Platform and announced an OS that will succeed PalmOS. I must admit that I was a big fan of BeOS back in the day. And while I was bummed when BeOS never made it and was purchased by Palm, it gave me hope that an OS based on Be would give Windows Mobile a run for its money. I have been waiting for this new OS since 2001.

    But now that I hear it is NOT based on BeOS and the entire thing including apps are web based, I have lost faith in Palm. They should have never scrapped the original project IMHO.
