Verizon to offer free Wi-Fi for home broadband customers

It looks like Verizon is jumping on the bandwagon and getting ready to offer free access to Wi-Fi hotspots for FiOS and DSL subscribers. The first thing that comes to mind is, well, where exactly are Verizon hotspots located? They don’t seem to be quite as ubiquitous as AT&T’s — a company that already offers free Wi-Fi to its U-Verse subscribers — but Verizon is teaming up with Boingo to provide the access. Globally, Boingo has about 100,000 hotspots and that number would undoubtedly grow with the increase in demand from Verizon customers. The rest of the details are currently being worked out, like whether Verizon will provide regional or nationwide access to subscribers (we’re thinking, or hoping, it will go with the latter).

I am currently using VZW BB 8830 which is identical to ATT BB 8820. The only different is ATT has wifi built-in. If I am in the US, of course I don’t need wifi. But since VZW 8830 is world phone which I can use it in Asia or Europe, I hope it had wifi like ATT BB 8820. VZW, please build a BB world phone with wifi.

Absolutely laughable! Free WiFi from the company that HATES WiFi. How many Verizon customers even have Verizon phones that have WiFi???? HAHAHA Oh, that’s right the Verizon fanbois claim it was never needed. HAHA

I guess neutering all those phones and offering few with WiFi has NOT paid off against the competition! This makes all the sense in the world as soon as Verizon starts offering 3G enabled laptops, they want WiFi now. HAHAHA

I have to love the morons that are now claiming how great it is, after bashing all of us for pointing out that Verizon ignored and neutered WiFi off their devices all these years!!!! Sure shows who the fanbois are!! HAHA

Meantime, where will these WiFi hotspots even be? AT&T has over 18,000 in the US alone. Verizon has ZERO, and has to partner now to compete with Cablevision, Comcast, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

This is absolutely the funniest thing I hear yet, sounds like a “palor trick” a “marketing stunt” as Verizon called it when Cablevision rolled out WiFi! HAHAHAHA

    @ Paul

If VZ is teaming up with Boingo to provide free Wifi, then they will have 24,180 hotspots in the US alone, well surpassing AT&T…who’s laughing now? Next time read the whole article before writing idiotic posts…and I’m not a VZW fanboi just in case you think i am, I have t-mobile, I hate VZW just as much as the next guy.

    @ Denny:

Who cares! Don’t you want to admit that Verizon is a bit late to the party and neutering all those mobile devices all those years did not work in the marketplace.

And for clarification AT&T OWNS the hotspots! Verizon OWNS none! Their announcement is a “parlor trick – marketing stunt” or an admission of defeat for trying to kill WiFi – YOU choose! HAHAHA

AT&T biggest WiFi hotspot provider with Wayport buy
    http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2008/11/atampt-becomes-worlds-largest-wifi-hotspot-provider-with-wayport-acquisition.ars

They have Barnes and Nobile, Starbucks, McDonalds, most major airports and hotels

AT&T offers BB with WiFi and of course the iPhone with WiFi. Last time I looked Verizon had maybe one or two Windows Mobile phones with WiFi – so Verizon smartphone users are out!
