Motorola’s loss widens in Q1 2009; company remains committed to Android
Motorola announced its Q1 2009 financial results today and reported total sales of $5.4 billion with a net loss of $231 million. Though wider than the $194 million loss posted in the same quarter last year, things were better than analysts expected this quarter. Motorola’s mobile devices division posted device sales of $1.8 billion and shipped 14.7 million handsets, grabbing an estimated 6 percent share of the global handset market. Handset sales have dropped 45 percent from Q1 2008 and operating loss has widened to $509 million from $418 million from 2008. On the bright side however, Moto posted a $595 million operating loss in Q4 of last year so at least things are moving in the right direction. Motorola notes that it continues to make progress on its upcoming handsets and remains committed to launching several new Android-based handsets by Q4 2009 with multiple carriers and in multiple regions. That little green robot sure has some heavy lifting to do.

what do you expect motorola hasn’t released any good phones lately they refuse to let go the RAZR and if they dont star making a change they go go down the drain
Hopefully there actually going to come out with some nice phones eventually.I don’t think you can turn a company around without some good product!

If by good product, I hope you aren’t referring to the “Ironman” which has a form factor only a mother could love (Hint, anyone?)
As for the “Calgary,” I’m going to reference damiaking in stating that thr RAZR styling is not only dated, it seems desperate (I’m referring to the slide-out QWERTY on that unit).
Moto can put all their hopes on Android (disclaimer: I am a fan of Android and use a G1), but without the proper hardware, what’s the point? I think it’s a little late for the to rely on an OS to save their ASS. Just my .02

As for Motorola, clearly the company is doing well enough on the whole, but it’s their mobile devision that’s killing them. I don’t know if they’re going to have a viable Android phone out in time to even matter. Not to mention, if their latest design leaks are any indication, are people even going to want to be seen with it?

Design sells phones. There will always be diehards who will purchase based on brand, OS, etc., but at the end of the day design sells.

As a former Nextel faithful, I understand what you are saying, but (somebody correct me if I am wrong) isn’t IDEN slated to be either dismantled or used as an emergency only band? I was under the impression that Sprint had until 2010 to meet certain Federal guidelines for the use of that band, and were either unwilling or unable to do so.
motorola has to get on board with either android or symbian or perhaps both. also some serious fresh designs that will have people rushing to the store to get them. aura anyone?

What Moto really needs to do is bringback the original razr design.It should be running android and have a 5 megapix cam.Now that would really sell!!!
