Is the PSP Go! the new UMD-less PSP?
We’ve heard some rumors about an upcoming PSP refresh in the past — ok, a whole lot of rumors — but new information is casting doubt upon the details of previous information. 1UP is reporting that the new PSP will be christened the PSP Go! and will finally do away with that awful UMD system while taking on a slider form. In place of UMDs, it is said the PSP Go! will come in 8GB and 16GB models meaning a green light for game downloads. As for games, Sony is reportedly planning to have around 100 old and new games ready for launch time. Sadly those of you who were looking for a bit of dual-joystick action will be disappointed to note that according to this new rumor, a second analog stick will not be added to the right-hand side. Such is life, we suppose. Word is Sony will make the PSP Go! official at E3 next month and have it hit the streets in Japan in September with a US launch in either late October or early November — ensuring its inclusion in plenty of letters to Santa. And yes, the image above is a mock up.

…Why can they not just throw a second analog stick on the damn thing. I mean, really?! Think about all the sweet FPS’n that could be if only for a second stick. Eh, guess i’ll take a pass on this one too.
No wifi?
Sony is like Verizon with the no Wifi for it’s SmartPhones. They don’t give a shit what the people want.
…and guaranteed to ship with dead pixels at no extra cost.
They need to put on that 2nd analog already! Also, I hope they put in a different memcard format other than SmartDuo or whatever it’s called. But this is Sony so maybe not…
Original PSP had wifi, and i believe the newer ones do as well. As far as a new MC format, not a chance sony loves to use their in house crap tech perfect example those friggin UMD’s which im sure were nothing more than recycled minidiscs.
Wow, for a mock-up, it looks pretty cool! Maybe it’ll look even better when Sony is supposed to announce it!
Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).
hopefully its just rumors that the second one isnt there. We can still be optimistic.
You forgot to mention that Verizon and Sony are reportedly working on making a PSP Go!Phone–another “iPhone killer”!!
Seriously though, a question about ditching the UMD. Capacity of UMDs is roughly 900mb, so with flash storage you’re still limited to roughly 7-14 “full-length” games (given 8gb/16gb flash memory). Did any PSP game ever take advantage of all the storage, or was the capacity only used for the stupid UMD movies?
Sony’s been on my #@+* list since I bought one of their laptops that rattled & had 3 other problems right out the box. The umd’s r a point of contention 4 all psp owners. I can wait 4 sony 4 get serious cause that gives me more time 2 spend with the my new DSi with wifi that I picked up 2 weeks ago.
am I the only one that loved popping out the disks…?
oooh and double points if it’s still spinning!
I understand that this is a mock-up, but wouldn’t pressing the shoulder buttons on this slide it shut?
Ergonomics on this mock-up may be an issue for me. That’s a large screen to hold up when your main grip is at the bottom so your thumbs can reach the push-buttons. Maybe I’m overthinking it.
Complete Garbage as it Stands right now.
I had no problem with having one thumbstick. I cant even imagine playing a handheld game with two thumbsticks, would seem uncomfortable
Actually UMDs hold up to 1.8 GB. For that reason, I sort of hope that Sony scraps the plans for an 8GB “PSP Go!” and just release them at 16GB and 32GB. 8GB is going to feel dated pretty fast, especially since Apple will probably have 16GB and 32GB iPod nanos by the time this launches…
Hi. There. You. Right. Sony. Needs. A. 32. Gb. Version. With. A. 16. Gb. Memory. Stick. That. Will. Give. You. A. Whopping. 48. Gb. Of. Memory
“Such is life we suppose”
Yeah, such is Sony not getting my money I suppose.
No point in this then. I want a NEXT GEN PSP. I want one with DUAL STICKS. Accelerometer. Touch screen. Something to make it UP TO DATE.
Oh crap, lets remove the UMD drive and make it a ’slider’. Boooooooooooo Sony! Boo!
Damn Sony, no wonder you’re doing so bad.
Think I’ll stick to my PSP-1000. Thanks.
And yes, I know all the ’sliders’ are mock ups, but who doesn’t doubt that Sony will go with style over function?
ur dumb, verizon doesnt block wifi on smartphones, pretty much all high end windows mobile phones for verizon do have wifi
The new PSP model needs a Virtual Keyboard and touchscreen, much like the iPhone in landscape mode.that was my biggest concern
Great reading, thank you
